2 Page 2 Our New Rector Father James Thibodeaux Church News Greetings, St. Christopher's Community! We are so excited to be joining you in Christian faith, worship, mission, and community! More info will be coming out soon, but here's a little snippet of who the Thibodeaux's are. I'm a graduate of Westmont College (Evangelical), The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (ELCA) and General Theological Seminary (Episcopal). Annaka, my wife, grew up Lutheran and works as a Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner at Seattle Children's Hospital. We have two toddlers, Serenia (age 4) and Haakon (age 2). All of us like hiking, music, bike rides, games of all kinds, making and eating good food, camping, and - would you believe it? - Church! We can't wait to get to know you more! And, oh, we're going to have SO much fun! Rejoicing in the power of the Spirit, Fr. James + and the Thibodeaux Family Note from Annette: Fr. James starts in mid-october. Thank You for Helping at the Blueberry Bash!! Thank you to everyone who lent a hand in making the 2014 Blueberry Bash a success! This year we had many people helping before the Bash, working the day of the Bash and making donations for the Bash. Without all this help it wouldn t have been as successful. We should have all the expenses turned in soon, but the gross receipts were over $7, If you were a booth lead or bought supplies for the Blueberry Bash, then please turn in your receipts and note on the receipt if you would like to be reimbursed or if you would like it to be a donation and it can be recorded on your Giving Statement.

3 Church News Page 3 Education Hour September 7 Fr. James has agreed to lead our Adult Education Hour beginning this Sunday, September 7th at 9:00 am. The program is: Embracing Emergence Christianity Author, historian and keen cultural observer Phyllis Tickle invites us to join her in examining the changing face of Christianity and culture. Phyllis surveys 2000 years of Western history, identifying the great upheavals that occur in Western culture and Christianity every 500 years. The last was the Great Reformation of the 1500 s; the next is happening now. What are the implications of this Great Emergence, both culturally and spiritually? What are the key questions and issues that need to be addressed? Where might we be headed next? And, perhaps most importantly, where are you, at this moment? Might you be an emergence Christian? examining the changing face of Christianity and culture Using the work of Phyllis Tickle, we will explore some of the changes we face as Christians and as the Church in these changing times. We will be using a video series to begin our discussion each week no books, no homework! Please join us for an informative hour before our celebration beginning Sunday, September 7 at 9:00 am. Craig Confirmation with ELCA Bishop Jaech, Sept. 14 Come support our youth as they embark on their next step in their Christianity by choosing to be confirmed in the Lutheran faith with Bishop Jaech on September 14th during the 10:30 am worship. Christikon Shareholder s Reception, Sept. 21 The Christikon Shareholder s reception will be after worship on Sunday, Sept. 21st. The youth and their families want to thank everyone for their support with refreshments and entertainment.

4 Page 4 Church News/Ways to Serve Open Hands Food Bank Garden Meeting The Open Hands Food Bank Garden holds meetings at 7:00 pm every 2nd Wednesday of the month. The meetings are held at the church and are open to all interested. Gardening experience is not required. The next meeting will be September 10 th at 7:00 pm. All are welcome. This year we had more volunteers than we ve seen in the recent past on the day of the Bash. That confirms how dedicated our congregation is to ensuring St. Christopher s longevity and success! Because of this, we would like to form a Blueberry Bash Committee to determine the future of the Blueberry Bash. Does the committee want the Bash to remain In the past, we automatically signed-up the entire congregation to serve as coffee hour co-hosts for fellowship after worship. This is a wonderful way for the hosts to meet people in the congregation and vice-a-versa. Come Join Our New Committee the same? Make changes big or small? Scale it down? Committee members do not have to be a co-coordinator or booth lead. Once the committee is blessed by the Vestry Council, the committee will be able to act independently. Annette Settle is willing to be on the committee. Ideally we would like 3-5 people on the committee. Coffee Hour Hosts Needed a shared duty, with two families serving every Sunday. Currently families serve 3-4 times a year. The co-hosts coordinate what they would like to serve and are responsible for set-up service and clean-up. Currently, we have a coffee hour host list and we are in need of expanding that list. 5 Church News/Ways to Serve Men s Breakfast and Fellowship Group The men s breakfast group meets every other Thursday morning at 7:30am at the IHOP in West Olympia (1520 Cooper Point Rd. SW) for good company, good food, and conversation about our faith. This month we ll gather on September 4 th and 18 th. All are welcome! Page 5 Annette is retiring to spend more time with her family. Therefore, we are hiring internally to replace Annette. The person should have the ability to work independently Office Manager Wanted and preferably be proficient in Word, Excel, and Publisher. Some bookkeeping experience is preferred too. A more detailed job description is posted in the narthex. Sunday School Coordinator Needed With Annette retiring and Charlotte stepping back a little, we are in need of a Children s Ministry Coordinator. Our coordinator works with the Rector and teachers to ensure that we have teachers scheduled. Our teachers have already been contacted and scheduled through the end of See Annette Settle if you are interested. Sunday School Teachers, and Assistants Needed Sunday School begins on Sept. 14 and we are in need of Sunday School assistants and Substitute Sunday School Teachers. We are required to have two adults present for classes and we currently have only one person scheduled for each Sunday. Children are so inquisitive, and it is so rewarding to help them understand the stories of the Bible. Teachers can use Godly Play or Weaving God s Promise, an online curriculum. 6 Page 6 Ways to Serve/Children s Ministry/Youth Group Join in Worship Leadership This Season Our worship is so much richer with many voices and hands helping to lead us. There are many ways to help lead: welcoming people to worship as a greeter, reading the scriptures, and serving Communion are all vitally important and they re even fun, too. Contact the church office or Deacon Patti for more information. Sunday School Starts on September 14th Sunday school starts on Sunday, September 14th. Children will begin the day downstairs, but then join the congregation and Bishop Jaech in the confirmation of our youth. Youth Groups Begins on September 21st Our interim Youth Leader, Melinda Stum, has agreed to continue working with our youth until Fr. James has settled in. This year we have decided to split the Youth Group into a Middle School and High School Group. Middle School Youth Group Grades 6th 8th The Middle School Youth Group will begin on Sunday, September 21st and meet from 5:00 6:30 pm, with families rotating on bringing snacks. Below are the class topics: Session 1: What is Spiritual and Faith Formation? Session 2: Mediation (Prayer) Session 3: Prayer Beads Session 4: Iconography (Christian Art) Session 5: Incorporate spiritual practices into daily routines

7 Youth Group High School Youth Group Grades 9th 12th Page 7 The High School Youth Group will begin on Sunday, September 21st and meet from 6:45 8:15 pm, with families rotating on bringing snacks. Below are the class topics: Session 1: Religion in Media Session 2: Religion and Politics Session 3: Faith and Depression/Suicide Session 4: Faith and Addiction (Substance Abuse) Session 5: Incorporating faith into daily experiences Confirmations with the Bishops We had 14 youth complete their confirmation education and have scheduled confirmations with both the Lutheran and Episcopal Bishops! ELCA Bishop Rick Jaech will preside on Sunday, September 14th at 10:30 am and Episcopal Bishop Sandy Hampton will be presiding on October 5th at 10:30 am. Confirmands please arrive to church by 9:45 am, so the Bishop can meet with you prior to service beginning.
