1 ST. MA R Y S E PI SCO PAL CHURC H Cry s ta l Lak e, I ll i noi s A u g us t, Vol.40, No.7 Rector s Page The Rev. Fran Holliday Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary s, This summer has been a wonderful and rich time at the parish with all of the wonderful activities and worship services. The summer is not over yet and there is still time to join us for one more Lawn Chair Theologians conversation out on the lawn on Tuesday, August 18 th at 7:00 p.m. During our last two lawn chair gatherings we enjoyed such topics as Can God change the past?, Is there such thing as fate?, and If the resurrection happens on the last day, where do people go until the final judgment? Each month roughly 23 of us have gathered outside for great conversation, not to mention a wonderful spread of food. Please join us and bring your lawn chair and a topic if you wish. Mark your calendars for Sunday August 16 th for our 10:00 a.m. Outdoor Eucharist and Parish Picnic, complete with wonderful food and children s activities. We will have the grills fired up and be serving hot dogs, brats and chips. Please sign up to bring side dishes, desserts and beverages. We also need help setting up and cleaning up. There is a sign up sheet at the back of the church, or you can send Amy Noe an at parishofc@stmaryepiscopal.org. Please note that we are having our regular 8:00 a.m. service as well on August 16 th. Thank you to Pam Erickson, Jim Dingle, Judy and Ted Thornton, Marci and Jose Cantu, and all those who have been keeping up our beautiful flowers, lawn and grounds over the summer. I am very grateful for all the volunteer hours you have put in caring for our lovely property. Blessings, Fran Looking Ahead: Mark Your Calendars for Celebration Sunday! You are cordially invited to a Rectory Open House on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, following the 10:00 a.m. service. Join us at the Rectory indoor/outdoor open house with food and beverages, as we kick off the Fall Program Year. Everyone is welcome, children, family, friends, parishioners, old timers and newcomers. All the food and drink will be provided, please just bring yourselves. RSVP to Amy Noe in the office at parishofc@stmaryepiscopal.org so that Rev. Fran and Eileen can have enough food on hand for everyone. All are welcome! Vol.40, No.7 Page
2 AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS Worship at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. continues throughout the summer. Join us for worship, connection, conversation, and fun! There s something for everyone at St. Mary s. Sunday, August 9: Celebrate the Feast of St. Mary, our patron saint. (Transferred from August 15) Sunday, August 16: 10:00 a.m. Outdoor Eucharist and Parish Picnic. (See article, page 1) Join us as we celebrate this Sunday outdoors on our beautiful campus, followed by a cookout. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex of church. Please let us know how many from your family will be attending, what you would like to bring, and if you can help with setup and cleanup. Thank you!! Tuesday, August 18: Lawn Chair Theologians, 7:00 p.m. (see below for details) Saturday, August 22: Gardening Work Day, 9:00 a.m. to Noon. We have five beautiful acres of grounds at St. Mary s, that require constant attention during the growing season, and there are just a handful of people that do most of the work. Please consider lending a hand, to help with edging, weeding and trimming. Whatever time you can offer (even 30 minutes!) will be greatly appreciated! More hands means less work for all. Please bring your favorite gardening/trimming tool and power cord if you have them. Contact Pam Erickson if you have any questions. 3 Crystal Lake Food Pantry St. Mary s is one of many churches in the surrounding area who supply volunteers to help out once a month at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. The experience is very rewarding and fun, so if you have a couple of hours to help out we would really appreciate it! Upcoming volunteer dates are: Friday, August 28 th, and Friday, September 25 th. You can either volunteer in the morning (9:30 Noon), the afternoon (Noon 2:30) or both shifts. Contact Chris Bednaroski if you can help out! Thank you!! Don t forget, there are donation envelopes for the Food Pantry located in the Narthex. When the pantry makes purchases through the Northern Illinois Food Bank, they can s-t-r-e-t-c-h your dollars much further than purchasing groceries at a local retailer. CENTERING PRAYER GROUP ~ Beginning September 1, 2015 First and Third Tuesday of Each Month 7:30 p.m. ~ St. Mary s Great Hall All Are Welcome & Encouraged to Attend Contemplative Prayer We may think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words. But this is only one expression. In the Christian tradition, Contemplative Prayer is considered a pure gift of God. It is the opening of mind and heart our whole being to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words or emotions. Through grace we open our awareness to God whom we know by faith is within us, closer than thinking, closer than choosing closer than consciousness itself. Centering Prayer Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate the development of Contemplative Prayer by preparing our facilities to receive this gift. It is an attempt to present the teaching of earlier times in an updated form. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts a new light and depth of meaning on them. It is at the same time a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to a communion with Him. ~ Thomas Keating For more information contact the Reverend Fran Holiday (815) Save the Date: Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015 Crystal Lake Area Crop Hunger Walk St. Mary s will have a team in this year s Crop Hunger Walk in Crystal Lake. 25% of the money raised will go to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry to support a new initiative backpacks of food to be sent home with children for the weekend!
