2 Welcome to the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary First Sunday of Lent Stations of the Cross There will be Stations of the Cross on Fridays of Lent starting this Friday at 5:30 pm. A little history on this devotion: Stations of the Cross, also called the Via Dolorosa or Via Crucis, is a devotion going back to medieval pilgrimages to the Holy Land. In a way, this devotion is a spiritual pilgrimage. Some of the stations have distinct Biblical roots, such as the first station, where Jesus is condemned to death (Mark 14:61-64), and the eighth station, where Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem (Luke 23:27-28). Other stations are based on tradition while we do not precisely know if Jesus fell three times when carrying the cross, we meditate on Christ s suffering as if He had, in order to remind us how we ought to act when we fall. This devotion is powerful during Lent as we experience suffering of our own. Bishop s Monthly Holy Hour Bishop Andrew Bellisario, CM, invites all the faithful of the Diocese of Juneau to join him for a monthly Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a great need right now for items for clients who are transitioning from charity housing or shelters to a small rental apartment. Due to space limitations, the personal items should not be too large but not as small as a travel size. Most of the clients are single. Look for the cart by the coat rack right inside the main entrance. Help Support The Glory Hall! What we do: We are Juneau s emergency homeless shelter and soup kitchen. Our mission is to provide food, shelter and compassion to those in need. We are open everyday. We provide over 50,000 meals and 10,000 bed nights each year. What you can do: Pray for the poor. The Gospel message includes an imperative to help those in need. Volunteer! Parishioners from the Cathedral cook for the Glory Hall patrons on the third Thursday of each month. If you d like to help out, contact Mark Hunt at Donate. The Glory Hall relies on the generous donations from the community.
