2 Dear Friends, As I am writing this, Memorial Day Weekend is just a week away. Over the past thirteen years, each Memorial Day brings a memory of a phone message that was left for me during the parade in Branchville. It was a call from my District Superintendent, and I expected a short update on something for annual conference. Instead it was a call that changed the direction of my ministry. At that point, I had expected to be returning to the Branchville church for another year, but instead I was told that in a month I would be the pastor in Butler. To say that I was surprised was an understatement. To say that I was sad to be leaving a community that I had called home for thirteen years was also an understatement. But somehow I also knew that God had something great in store for the future, and so as I came to Butler I had faith that there was a blessing lying ahead. I was not disappointed. In fact, for the past thirteen years there were blessings that I have experienced in this congregation that never could have been imagined, most of which have come not from ministries started or programs accomplished, but in relationships with a congregation that has truly been amazing to serve: caring, supportive and encouraging. The journey we have traveled together has helped me to grow as a pastor and a person. You have stepped out in faith with me on some bold initiatives, and been willing to change and grow as the Spirit has led us. The ministry we have done together has prepared me for this new phase of serving God that, quite frankly, is still somewhat of an unknown to me. But I trust that God will provide, as God has provided throughout these past years together. The Butler United Methodist Church will always hold a prominent place in my heart. This is the church where my daughter was married and my grandson baptized. It is the congregation that stood with me in some of the most challenging struggles and the greatest joys. More than anything, I want to tell you all how thankful and grateful I am for all of you and all you have meant to me. As I move into my new phase of ministry, I know that you will have great days ahead with your new pastor. I ask you to support and encourage him as you have done for me, willing to grow and change with a new fresh vision that Mike will bring to you as you have done with me. Yet while our relationship as pastor and parishioner will change, we will always be brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you all for who you have been, for what you have meant to me and my family, and for all you have given of yourselves so that the name of Jesus might be made known to our community and the world. June 11 page 2 In Christ, Pastor Steve

9 Peace With Justice Sunday June 19, 2011 In a world where 250,000 children are forced to be fighters or sex slaves, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is the largest persistent violator, according to the United Nations Security Council. Because of the war, young boys are forced to enlist in the rebel army. Sexual assault of women and young girls has become the norm. Compounding the problem is conflict mineral, the selling of copper, tungsten, tin and other minerals to support war efforts. Unfortunately, minerals sold to global supply chains and corporations may be used as components for electronics that are part of our everyday lives: mobile phones, MP3 players and computers. United Methodists are trying to do something about it. Armed with a grant from the Peace with Justice Sunday offering, the Jerusalem Justice and Peace Ministry (JJPM) is assisting communities in the DRC. While physical and emotional healing is vital, the ministry also challenges unjust systems. We cannot keep quiet if there is something wrong, said JJPM executive Dr. Leonard Kabwita. JJPM workshops educate and empower Congolese people about justice issues in their communities and seek local solutions to close the gap between rich and poor. When you give to Peace with Justice Sunday, you support ministries in the DRC, the United States and worldwide to remove unjust systems and equip the victimized to live more fulfilled lives Craft Fair/Silent Auction/Second-Hand Market Place/Bake Sale Saturday, June 4 th, 9:30am - 3:30pm It s not too late to help!
