We are very excited to be offering Love in a Big World, a character education movement that provides social and emotional learning to help kids develop positive behaviors that will empower them in everyday life. In addition, we ll be having the kids join us for breakfast, so it is one less thing for parents to worry about during the sometimes chaotic summer break. Registration is open to children ages 4 thru 11! You can get a registration form in the hallway outside the church office. You can also contact the church office with any questions: Love in a Big World will begin each day at 8 AM and we ll finish up at about 11:30 AM. Vacation Bible School will conclude with a concert on the front porch of the church and will include songs the children have learned, along with songs by other musicians. The front porch event will be held on Friday evening (June 22) at 7 PM, followed by an ice cream social. If you d like to volunteer to help with VBS, please let Melissa or Pastor David know. The youth have partnered with Ace Hardware to put together a barbeque on June 2nd. This will be part of the Train Day festivities and will be held on the parking lot of the hardware store at Main and Boyd. You can come by for lunch or an early dinner as part of your Train Day journey. They ll be selling bratwurst and other items from 11 AM until 5 PM. You can also offer to help the youth with this fundraiser. They will need some volunteers and to borrow some coolers. Contact the church office or Amy Smith if you d like to help. Money raised will be used to pay for camp and other youth programming.

2 Building Update Our Tuesday Bible Study class is making its way through the various minor Prophets that finish up the Old Testament. We are studying Amos, and how God speaks through the prophet telling the people of a coming famine, but not just any famine. This hunger will be for the words of the Lord. (Amos 8:11) People will seek the words they will run back and forth but will be unable to find that which nourishes their souls. Have you seen the new walkway at the Rock Road entrance? It is beautiful, and we re so very happy to have an ADA compliant entrance to the church. This walkway and porch extension was completed after we received a matching grant from the Missouri United Methodist Foundation. If you haven t walked, run, rolled, or danced your way to the front entrance, what s keeping you? Having that as a key part of the text, we asked ourselves, What do we think people desire to hear when they are seeking a word from God? The responses were profound (and I will not take credit for any of this). It was shared that people want to have an awareness of self how they stand with God how they can find more meaning in pursuing the things of God. And it is believed that people need to know the enormous love of God. Again, I only have praise for what was shared. But it has made me think As St. Andrew s United Methodist Church, we are called to be the good news of Jesus Christ to our neighbors, our friends, even our enemies. So the question comes back to us: Are we individually and collectively moving toward a better understanding of who we are in Jesus Christ? Are we moving in the direction of knowing the enormous love of God found in Jesus Christ? And is that a love we share in our actions, in our work, in our spare time, our break room time? When people seek a word from God, what will they hear from us? Food Pantry Needs This is NO Can June! During the month of June, many of us will be busy planning and packing for vacation. Whether off to parts unknown or just heading into St. Louis for a stay at the Moonrise, one requirement is to pack light. Nobody wants to lug a huge suitcase around an airport or into a hotel lobby; the best wheeled luggage doesn t help at all when you need to haul the suitcase up onto a bed to get items from it. We follow a resurrected Jesus, who gives us victory over the famines that cause us to wonder, how do I fit in this world?, and does God really care about me? May we be the people may this be the place where others can turn, knowing that God s word, and God s great plan of salvation are spoken and lived out in ways that bring an end to the famine inside the human heart. God bless you with special thanks to our Tuesday afternoon group. In the spirit of packing light, we re dispensing with canned items for the month of June. Instead, bring boxes! Some options are pancake mix, cornbread mix, pasta, crackers, macaroni and cheese, breakfast cereal, granola bars, and beans and rice mixes. Roof Update $36, collected so far for the roof! 2

3 Want to learn to salsa? Sorry to be misleading, but the class isn t actually about dancing. It is about how to make salsa. This workshop, facilitated by the Jefferson County Extension office, will guide participants through the steps to safely make homemade salsa using the boiling water canning technique. You must register by June 6 th to take part in the class, and the cost is $15. Please call the MU Extension office in Hillsboro to register Music Notes The choir s last performance before the break will be May 27th. During June, watch for special music to work with Pastor David s sermons. Could be interesting! The Front Porch concert in June will be on Friday, June 22nd as part of VBS. Tails with Tales Tails with Tales will be at the DeSoto Library on Saturday, June 9th at 10:30 AM. It is a program that involves people and their trained therapy dogs. The therapy dogs provide affection and comfort. These pets have a special ability to interact with members of the public and enjoy doing it. Therapy animal owners volunteer their time to visit with their dog in the community. The photo here is of Tobey, the Alexander's Saint Bernard. They ll be at the library on June 9 th and would be happy to have you visit the library to take part in the Tails with Tales program. Sugar Moon dates in June June 14th at Coyol from 5:30-8:30 PM June 23rd at the Russell House from 6-9 PM June 29th at La Pachanga in Herculaneum from 5-8:30 PM Larry Bay Music Director Thank You T he youth would like to thank those who participated in the Mother and Daughter Murder Mystery Luau. It was a wonderful experience, and the youth were glad to see so many of you support their efforts. 3

4 Pony Bird Bench & Swing We recently received a special request from Pony Bird. At the Drury Home here in DeSoto, they need some outside seating to accommodate families that are visiting the residents. After some deliberation, it was determined that St. Andrew's can provide a glider and a swing. The glider will be installed on the patio area and the swing will be installed along the path around the pond. Plaques will be included, and the furniture will be purchased locally from Orscheln's. The cost of the furniture is being covered by a private donor and memorial funds. However, help will be needed when the furniture is installed. If you are willing to help, please contact the church office. Train Day Youth 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Kids in grades 5-12 are encouraged to register a team for the 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will take place as part of the Train Day festivities. The tournament is divided into 3 different divisions, and the teams can be all girls, all boys, or co-ed. The cost is $20 per team and play begins at 9 AM on June 2 nd. You can find a few registration forms on the youth bulletin board or use the form below. Early registration is recommended. The tournament is being sponsored by the Grandview Jr. Eagles Basketball League and Mainly De Soto, so ask Peter Faust if you have questions. 4

6 The first official day of summer is June 21 st! DeSoto Farmer s Market News Train Day: June 2, 2018 The market is open every Saturday from 8 AM until noon through October. It's the Saturday morning place to be, and on Saturday, June 2nd, the market will be focusing on transportation too. Bring your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, aged 4 to 12 and have them fitted for a bicycle helmet. The helmets are being out and fitted for FRE E! given As with the previous noisy offerings, the money collected will be sent to Annual Conference. 6
