1 The Redeemer Review Proclaiming Christ into the 21st Century Volume 7 July, 2013 Methodist 101 Appointment & Itinerant System! After attending the Annual Conference both in Chicago and California, people asked why I do attend both conferences. Somewhat, this is a kind of annual question I am asked and answered each year around this time of the year. I ve decided to share my answer in writing via this newsletter for this time, so people can find the answer later if they have this question again. So, here it goes. Why am I attending the annual conference both in Chicago and California? My simple answer to this question is that I ve received a cross-conference appointment to be the senior pastor of ORUMC under of the Book of Discipline (the rule book of the United Methodist Church). You might question what a crossconference appointment is. Let me divide this term into a bite size. 1 Appointment. The term appointment in The United Methodist Church is applied to the place or position to which the ordained minister has been assigned by the bishop. The clergy deployment system for The United Methodist Church is referred to as the itinerant system. Under this system ordained ministers are appointed or sent by the bishop to their assignments each year. The pastor who is staying at one church more than a year means the pastor has been re-appointed to that church each year. It is the obligation of all ordained elder ministers to accept these appointments according to 329 of the Book of Discipline. Cross-Conference. The United Methodist Church, which began as a movement and a loose network of local societies with a mission, has grown into one of the most carefully organized and largest denominations in the world. The United Methodist structure and organization began as a means of accomplishing the

John Wesley, the founding father of Methodism, recognized the need for an organized system of communication and accountability and developed what he called the connexion, which was an interlocking system of classes, societies, and annual conferences (UM Member s Handbook, p 24). No local church is the total body of Christ. Therefore, local United Methodist churches are bound together by a common mission and common governance that accomplish reaching out into the world. United Methodist churches and organizations join in mission with each other and with other denominations. Connectionalism shows through the clergy appointment system, through the developing of mission and ministry that United Methodists do together, and through giving. When Our Redeemer s UMC (ORUMC) was in need of a pastor, the bishop and the cabinets (a group of District Superintendents) searched for a pastor for ORUMC and found me in California. The Northern Illinois Annual Conference where ORUMC belongs to and the California-Pacific Annual Conference where my membership is, worked together to give me a cross-conference appointment. A cross-conference appointment means the pastor received an appointment in a conference whose membership does not belong to or the church received the pastor whose membership belongs to another conference. ORUMC and I are in this relationship. Let me go back to the original question Why am I attending the annual conference both in Chicago and California? It is because of this relationship. I attend the

3 annual conference in Chicago on behalf of ORUMC. I also attend the annual conference in California because my ordination membership belongs there. Attending the annual conference is a mandatory for all ordained clergypersons of The United Methodist Church. This year 2013, Julie Gorvett and Debbie Hernandez attended the annual conference with me. On Sunday, July 14, there will be a moment to share the message/information we ve got from the Northern Illinois Annual Conference (NIC). By connecting ourselves with the church at large, we can be more efficient in pursing God s dream in the new mission field of the 21st Century. Ribbit! ~ Pastor Sunny Summer Worship Schedule May 26 to September 1 One 10:00 a.m. The March 21 Ad Council approved the Worship Committee s proposal for summer worship. We will have one worship service at 10:00 a.m. The results from the worship survey will help determine the flavor of the summer worship service. There will NOT be adult Sunday school at 9:00 a.m. during the summer. 3 Vacation Bible School July 15 to 18 (Monday - Thursday) 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. We re bringing a global fair to the children at our Vacation Bible School, Everywhere Fun Fair. 4 Youth News Summer Youth Events by Marianne Rogenski (for those entering 7th grade through completed 12th grade) July 9, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Pool Party at the Hill s House! Bring your towel, wear an appropriate swimsuit, and come to have fun! We will order pizza so bring $ to pay for your share. Please also bring a snack or a dessert to share. There will be other games if you don t want to swim something for everyone! Please RSVP to Marianne by July 7. Feel free to invite friends! Community Crisis Center As summer is arriving please consider donating summer pajamas for women and children along with new or gently used swim suits. The center is also in need of sun block lotion and mosquito repellent. Toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, shampoo and conditioner, disposable shavers, anti perspiration/ deodorant for men and women, hand and body lotion, nail clippers and emery boards are always needed. The Crisis Center Food Pantry is always in need of cereals, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, saltine crackers, soups, pasta, macaroni & cheese, spaghetti sauce, tuna, white rice, juice boxes, granola bars/ fruit& pudding cups, and hand can openers. Please leave all items for the Crisis Center in the CCC bin in the Narthex cabinet (the bin is labeled). August 8, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Game Night at Church. Bring your favorite game indoor or outdoor. There will be snacks and drinks provided. 7 July 13, 8:00 ORUMC All members and friends of Our Redeemer s are invited to our regular monthly breakfast on Saturday, July 13 at 8:00 a.m. We will share in breakfast and fellowship with a short business meeting. July Nashville, TN All men are also invited to consider the upcoming UMM National Gathering that will be held Friday, July 12 to Sunday, July 14 at Belmont University in Nashville TN. Wednesday Bible Group Potluck Salad Brunch July 17 & August 14 The Wednesday Bible Group is taking the summer off, but all are invited to join the group for Bible reading and a potluck salad brunch on July 17 and August 14. Please contact Jean Homeyer, , if you have any questions. 7 Adult Mission Trip July The adult mission team that has gone to Louisiana and Mississippi for Katrina relief and to Joplin, MO for tornado relief will be going this year to Allenwood, NJ for Hurricane Sandy relief. All adult members and friends of Our Redeemer s (18 years and older) are invited to participate. The cost will be $150 for age 25 and above and $100 for age 18 to 24. GODSPELL August 1, 2, & 3 GODSPELL is returning to Our Redeemer s this summer! Partcipation in this theatrical production based on the Book of Matthew is open to 7th through 12th graders from ORUMC and the community. Performances will be on August 1, 2 and 3, 2013, at 7:00 PM. 8 Personal Notes Our deepest sympathy to Cathy Mottar and family on the death of her grandmother, Marjorie Ernst who passed away June 10.
