2 MUSINGS FROM MIKE What do you do when the Jehovah s Witnesses come to the door? - Tell them to go away, you don t want to talk about this? - Listen for a while and then say, Well, that s your opinion.? - Pretend you aren t home? What if you were equipped enough in your faith that you could share a conversation with the JWs? What if you had enough conviction in who and what you are in Christ that you could say it simply and clearly to someone who believes differently from you? When I was a growing up there was a way in which you did not have to be able to articulate your faith in any clear way. We were a Christian nation and everyone assumed that everyone else had some Christian background. It s not like that anymore. You cannot assume anything in our culture and what God needs more than ever is people who can clearly, openly and in an inoffensive way say what they really believe and why. This fall, I invite you to share with me in a journey through Tim Keller s book, The Reason for God where he looks at the objections people in our world raise to the Christian faith and how you can equip yourself to speak to those objections. Keep an eye out for the sign ups and hopefully we can journey with each other in a way that allows you to answer the door the next time the Jehovah s Witnesses come by. Shalom, Pastor Mike September 12 page 2
3 Keep our team of missionaries in your prayers this month as they travel and serve in Honduras. The team leaves on Friday, August 31 st, and they will be traveling to Comayagua, Honduras to help the Manantial de Vida congregation build a church and assist in a medical brigade to the local residents before returning on September 8th. Team members are Rev. Mike McKay, Pastora Lourdes Matos Delgado, Lourdes Calle, Jorge Hoos, Dawn Erickson, Teri Nocentino, and Jack Inglis. NEXT PREACHING SERIES Beginning September 16 th, Pastor Mike will begin a new series of sermons entitled: The Things Jesus Brought to Our World. In this series, Pastor Mike will examine qualities that Jesus and his people brought to our world; things like: - Status and Role of Women - Status and Role of Children - Education for Everyone - Humility - Compassion - Service of our Neighbor In addition, Pastor Mike will invite you to examine how those gifts still matter to our world and ways that you and all of us together as a church can embody those values in our daily life. Did you miss the training opportunity last fall to become a certified Early Responder? The next ERT (Early Response Team) training for North Jersey will be offered on October 27 th from 9-4pm at the Park United Methodist Church in Bloomfield NJ. For information or to register call Carol at Join us Sunday, September 30 th as we work together to On Sunday morning, September 30 th we will be putting our faith in action through a variety of projects and activities that will carry us out into our community to serve our neighbors and be the heart and hands of Jesus made visible. Watch for the sign ups and more information in the coming weeks. September 12 page 3

9 The CUMAC Echo News from the Front-Line of the Fight Against Hunger At CUMAC they're busy sorting school supplies for returning students, collecting books to fill local libraries, and teaching summer volunteer groups about hunger. Recently their staff went through nutrition training so they can share health tips with clients as we give out fresh fruits and veggies. CUMAC s FOOD SUPPLIES ARE LOW CUMAC's food supplies are typically low during the summer, many of their supporters go on vacation and donations slow. At the same time, many families are in need of extra food to for their children while they're not receiving free and reduced price meals at school. This always requires staff and volunteers to take special care and watch supplies closely. This year, CUMAC has actually run out of a lot of our staple items. As one volunteer put it, without the right food "we've been packing bags very creatively," and we're truly in need of help restocking so that clients leave with well rounded meals for the week. CUMAC needs the following items: 1. Peanut Butter 2. Jelly 3. Canned Fruit 4. Canned Protein (tuna, canned chicken, Beefaroni, etc.) 5. Boxed and canned meals 6. Pudding (pre-made and powder) 7. Condiments (Ketchup, mustard, etc.) 8. Pancake and corn bread mix 9. Breakfast Syrup 10. Cake Mix and Frosting If you can make a donation it would be appreciated! If you have questions or would like more information, don't hesitate to call or send an . Call Stephanie in the CUMAC office at , or their address SAMES@CUMACECHO.ORG. They would love to hear from you and greatly appreciate your help as they work through this challenge. September 12 page 10
