New Sports Faction Names After seeking feedback from staff, Board, P&F and parents, I am pleased to announce our names for our sports factions. COLUMBA Blue Sister Mary Columba was one of the first Sisters of Mercy to live and teach in Dardanup in FINNEGAN - Green Father Peter Paul Finnegan was the first school Priest in Dardanup in Father Finnegan, a zealous and single-minded priest who decided that there was a need for a Catholic School in Dardanup. On Tuesday April 6, 1920, Prinsep Park house was leased from Mr Venn as a temporary School and residence for the Sisters of Mercy pending the erection of a Convent and School on the site chosen on the mission land in the township. CLANCEY Gold Mr Clancey was the first school-master at OLOL. He was a Ticket-of-Leave man, employed to teach the first students. THOMAS Red Thomas Little was a Catholic layman who is credited for the beginnings of Catholic Education in Dardanup due to his foresight and generosity. He drew up a deed in which he gave fifty acres of land from his own estate for the Church and school. New beginnings with new faction names, so all faction groupings have been re-allocated. This has enabled us to allocate an even number of students from each year level into all factions to ensure a fun, competitive carnival. New factions will be communicated to families today. We are investigating faction shirts, more information will follow. Sports Carnival Dates for your Diary Please note that our school Sports Carnival will be held on Friday 13 th October, the first Friday of Term 4, and our Interschool Carnival will be held on Friday 20 th October, one week later. Winter Uniform As stated in our School Handbook, sports shoes should be predominantly white, black or navy blue, and should not include fluoro colours or laces. Please keep this in mind when purchasing new sports shoes, thank you. New school socks have arrived. These are available in the uniform shop in sizes 5-8, 9-12, 13-3, 2-8, 8-11 (these sizes are based on shoe sizes) for $8.00 per pair. The uniform socks are to be worn by the girls with winter and summer uniforms and with all students sports uniforms (boys and girls). There will be a phase-in period of one year, 2018, and will become a compulsory part of the uniform from Children s Liturgy of the Word This will recommence on Sunday 17 th September, all are welcome. Please see the Parish News attached to this newsletter for further information. Committee for 25th Anniversary Celebrations Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the expansion of our school from the old three-roomed school house (currently our library and computer lab) to the current buildings that we now occupy. To coordinate the celebrations, we are seeking a committee of interested people to plan for and organise the celebrations. Initial planning includes an outdoor family Mass proposed for Saturday 10th February (the Feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, school patron saint) and a BIG celebration day (possible Fete, evening Sundowner/sausage sizzle/bush dance) on Saturday 10th March. Please let the office ladies know if you would be interested in assisting on a committee. Have a wonderful week May God bless you Mrs Angela Hegney Principal

Religious Education News Upcoming dates: Sunday 20th August- Year 2 & 6 Family Mass, 9am Wednesday 23rd August Confirmation Parent/ Child Workshop, 6.30pm Saturday 26th August Reconciliation Commitment Mass, 6pm Gospel Reading Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus heals the daughter of the Canaanite woman because of her great faith. Even when spurned by Jesus, the faith of the Canaanite woman makes her bold enough to argue and ask again for what she needs. Her persistence and great confidence that Jesus could heal her daughter reminds us of the confidence with which our children bring to us their own needs. In their faith and trust we can find modern examples of how we might approach God in prayer. As a family recall some times when a request for something was presented by one family member to another with confidence and persistence. If the request was denied, talk about why that was so. If the request was eventually granted, talk about what led to the change of heart. Then read together today s Gospel, Matthew 15: Was anyone surprised by Jesus response to the Canaanite woman? Why or why not? What makes Jesus change his mind and heal the woman s daughter? When we pray, God wants us to be as confident in his mercy. Invite family members to identify the things that they most need from God. Pray these prayers of petition together as a family, confident that God will hear and answer your prayers. Making Jesus Real Stretch the Moment- Reflections Sometimes when we are struck by an event, scene or encouraging word, we should take a little longer to ponder the moment and smell the flowers otherwise, if we are not careful, life rushes past us. Activity: Can I spend 1-2 minutes a couple of times a week to stretch the moment? Today's feast celebrates Mary's Assumption into heaven. It is one of three feasts of Mary that are Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. The Gospel for this holy day recalls Mary's actions after the announcement of Jesus' birth by the Angel Gabriel. Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is also with child. Elizabeth greets Mary with full recognition of the roles they and their unborn children will play in God's plan for salvation. Mary responds to Elizabeth's greeting with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God's history of showing favour upon the people of Israel.

CLASS NEWS Pre primary In Pre primary we have been continuing investigating the Solar System. We have learnt Interesting facts about all the planets and the order in which we can find them from the sun. We used descriptive words to describe what we thought the surface of the moon would feel like if we were able to touch it. The class also enjoyed examining what space suits are made out of, and all the different things that a space suit requires, for example a control panel and radio. In literacy we have been enjoying using the interactive whiteboard to explore phonics games. As a class we have created a wonderful mural of Jesus and his family. We enjoyed researching the clothes that people would have worn in those times. Year 4 In our Religious Education lessons we have been focusing on the human qualities of Jesus and have used the Bible to find scripture stories that show Jesus showing human emotion. We have also looked at how we can live like Jesus in our own lives. In Maths we continue to hone our mental arithmetic skills and have also been learning some new problem solving strategies. In Design Technology we have completed our research on playgrounds, and have started to build our own designs. Year 2 We have been doing lots of awesome art in Year 2. We have made 3D crocodiles, egg carton possums and paper plate wombats. We have been using geo-reflectors in Maths to draw symmetrical pictures, and have created beautiful symmetrical butterflies. During our writing sessions, we built sandcastles and then wrote a procedure on 'How to Build a Sandcastle'. Year 1 Class News In Literacy, we have been discussing how we can persuade others with our writing. We have written a persuasive letter trying to convince parents to go on a holiday of their child's choice. In Health, we have been learning about keeping safe near water and the roads, as well as cyber safety. Students had a lot to share about how to keep safe when using the Internet. Student had to create a poster promoting cyber safety. In mathematics, we are learning to tell the time and about Australian money. The class really enjoyed participating in the soccer clinic on Friday and are looking forward to attending the clinic again this week. We are getting excited for our class assembly in Week 9. Year 5 It's hard to believe it is week 5 already! In English, we have been learning about the different forms of poetry - who knew there were so many! This week, we are going to have a go at writing limericks. In Maths, we are using protractors to measure angles, it is a lot trickier than we thought. Our Caritas projects are coming along well and next week we are having a guest speaker from Caritas coming to talk to us about the incredible work they do all around the world. In Year Three, we have been learning more about fractions and telling the time. We have been reading The Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl and in Religious Education, we are finding out about John the Baptist. Our excursion to the Featured Wood Gallery and Museum in Treendale was very interesting and we had lots of fun on Science Day. Year 6 The class has been learning about poems and how to write and present them. We have also been learning about Saints, and we have done a project on the Saint that we chose for Confirmation. In Maths we have been working on how to read maps and grid references, and learning how to read and draw Cartesian planes. In Kindy we have continued to develop our Inquiry Learning through Minibeast observation and exploration. Using this knowledge, we have invented our own Minibeasts and made them out of modelling clay. As Scientists we had to describe their diet and habitat, list special characteristics and name our new discoveries. Through stories, poems and songs we have begun to learn about rhyme. We have been listening to words and sounds and developing the ability to break words down. We are enjoying the rhythm of the written and spoken word!

Thank you to our P&F for purchasing the Osmo Coding Kits and storage tubs for these resources.

What a wonderful incursion, being able to listen to James Foley tell us about his work as an Author and Illustrator, and co-create illustrations with student input.

Parish News Children s Liturgy of the Word After some time in recess, the Parish plans to re-establish this ministry soon, to be celebrated during our 9:00am Sunday Masses at Dardanup on the first and third Sunday of each month. Children s Liturgy of the Word will offer the children of our Parish community an opportunity to experience the Word of God and a time of prayer and reflection, both in their own space (Thomas Little Hall) and at an age-appropriate level. This will occur during the first half of Mass, after which the children will return to the Church to then re-join the whole community for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. For this ministry to become a reality, we need your help! Would you like to be part of a team of facilitators who provide with this ministry to our children? No special training is required, as the format is very simple and all pre-prepared. In accordance with the Child Protection Policies of both the Dardanup-Boyanup Parish and the Bunbury Diocese, all adult facilitators will need to hold a current Working With Children Card. The Parish will assist you in the application process if you do not currently hold one. If you would like to be part this important ministry for our children, please contact Kath Heelan ( ) or Vicki Dewar ( ) before Monday 21 August. We hope to re-commence this ministry on Sunday 17 September. Parish Youth Ministry Call for Volunteers Are you or your family interested in organising an occasional Saturday afternoon or evening youth activity/event for the young people (school years 5-10) of our parish community? In the past these have included such things as ten-pin bowling, pizza and movie night, bonfire night, sport/games afternoons, etc. but it s really up to you! We hope to re-commence these events soon perhaps once or twice a term to provide a positive and fun space for the young teens of our parish to gather socially. The events could be held either before or after our 6pm Parish Mass, during which the young people would be invited to participate in various ministry roles Greeters, Reader, Taking up the Collection, Presenting the bread & wine, etc. If you would like to be part of this or would just like to know more please contact Fr Wayne today! or wbendotti@hotmail.com Remembering Elizabeth Carbury of Dardanup A professionally produced DVD of the Irish Famine Commemoration event, held in May, is available to purchase from the school office for $15 each.
