3 STEWARDSHIP The theme for this stewardship year is the climactic line from the parable of the Good Samaritan: Go and Do the Same. (Luke 10:25-37). The implication is that God calls us to go and do the same as the Samaritan with all our resources material, human, and natural. Please be on the lookout for information, letters, special worship services and more as together we develop a responsible budget for the 2017 year. OCT 30th in worship SPECIAL SPEAKER: Rev. Dr. Katie Hays KATIE went to M.I.T. before she moved on from engineering (which she was really terrible at, but really liked) to theology. She was educated for traditional church ministry at Yale Divinity School and Princeton Theological Seminary. She did traditional church ministry for almost 20 years. Galileo Church is her attempt to do something completely different, because she had an epiphany while sprawled on the floor of a Spring Creek BBQ. You can ask her about that when you meet her in person. Katie has a husband of maaaaaaany years, Professor Lance Pape at Brite Divinity School, whom she has repeatedly asked to call her Reverend Doctor. And they have two teenaged kids, Lydia and Jack, who will make your life better just by knowing them. Katie is learning to love it when God takes an unexpected hard left turn, tires squealing, seat belts locking, cars all around God honking in indignation. She imagines God saying, Buckle up, suckers! every time God gets another one of us in God s muscle car. Or does God drive a Subaru? She s pretty sure it s a Subaru. She is currently serving as the Founding Pastor and Lead Evangelist for the Galileo Church in Mansfield.

4 The Parish Men s Ministry is a place for all Christian men of the Jacksboro area to come together for fellowship, prayer and encouragement! We are dedicated to helping each other and the community of Jacksboro! We meet once a month and start cooking breakfast at 6:30am; eat at 7:00am. We enjoy intriguing conversations and moments of prayer. Call the church office for the next breakfast date! SOUL SUPPORT Do you have lunchtime open? Join a small group of ladies who join together the 3rd Wednesday of every month at noon! Lunch is always provided, along with some fun spiritual content that allows us to develop deeper relationships with one another. Our next gathering will be October 19th, noon, in the ANNEX, across the street from the church building! Won t you join us? GRACEISTS Our evening small group for women is centered on real, raw and renewing relationships. This year we will tackle the topic A WOMEN & HER RELATIONSHIPS, using material from Rosemary Flaaten. Our next gathering is October 26th at 7p! Join us for snacks, beverages and conversation as we explore this topic. More information about the location will be available soon!

5 Youth Ministry Submitted by: Kristine Tisinger The youth group had a great time getting back into the swing of things on Wednesdays in September with a Holi color war, bubble suits, new t-shirts, and water balloons. In Sunday school we started a new series on our Biblical Ancestors. So far we ve built arks and learned how hard it would be to become new parents at the age of 90. On Wednesdays in October we ll be looking at the Real Life of Jesus. We re always looking for volunteers and hope that you ll join us for Sunday school or Wednesday evenings, even if it s just for dinner. Our youth group has a new name! We are officially called UCYF or United Christian Youth Fellowship! Come check out our group and have some fun! Sunday morning Bible study 9:45 First United Methodist Church, 2 nd floor Wednesday night youth group 6 7:15 pm for MS students 6:45 8 pm for HS students everyone eats from 6:45 7:15

7 MDO Xtreme check us out on Facebook Jacksboro Parish MDO Xtreme The month of September started a new school year at MDO and we hit the ground running! Each class spent a week focusing on Aa and All things apple and then a week focusing on Bb on things we can do to Be safe. The next week the focus was on Ii and I am special. These themes have also incorporated colors, numbers, shapes, and Bible stories into the lessons. We have had a blast this past month! Our infant class painted with their feet and have a motor skill they focus on each week. They are also learning basic sign language, one sign at a time, to help them communicate before they have the words to do so. Our toddler classes up to the Pre-K have had a blast with crafts, games, motor skill activities, songs, and even making their own snacks! Each class used graham crackers, icing, and M&M s to make their own edible stop lights during safety week. The three and four year old classes rolled out dough, added sliced apples, and sprinkled some goodness on top to create apple turnovers for the entire center during apple week! October will be full of Autumn fun, pumpkins, leaves, and everything Fall. We are hosting the annual MDO Halloween Parade on October 27th and will need volunteers to hand out candy while our kids trick or treat down the church hallways! 8 Suzanne s Desk In the August 31st issue of CHRISTIAN CENTURY magazine, there was a fabulous article from the publisher, Peter W. Marty. In the article he talks about the reluctance of churches to meet their neighbors. Here is a portion of what he has to say: On an average day in America, 10 churches permanently close their doors. The reasons for the closure are often necessary, unavoidable, and even healthy. Rural communities dwindle in size. New traffic and mobility patterns leave once vital churches off the beaten path. Massive capital expenditures overwhelm available resources. Small congregations struggle to afford a pastor. Sometimes a church will shutter its ministry when an exciting new start-up mission opens nearby. Often, however, churches close simply because someone missed a window of opportunity years before. Past leadership lacked the will or the nimbleness to flex with changing neighborhood demographics. Nobody put up a basketball hoop that could have formed a beautiful bridge between the congregation and its neighbors. Hosting after-school programs and ESL classes never figured into the church board s imagination. Creative partnerships with area agencies or businesses went unexplored." He goes on to talk about the commandment LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and how we like to call it a metaphor, but truly it IS a commandment. And then he writes, This can be a tall order for congregations more accustomed to fussing over interior traditions than knowing the lives of people across the street." I m so delighted that The Parish isn t one of those congregations! We share faith with Ecuador! We have common table with Casa de Oracion, our sister congregation here in Jacksboro. We serve faithfully at the food pantry. We offer childcare, and rarely turn anyone away for an inability to pay the tuition. And now? Now we are about to embark on a building campaign that will allow us to continue our proud heritage of our backpack ministry (and hopefully expand its offerings!) as well as look forward to continuing to serve the youth in our community. Many of them would qualify as the orphan or the lost that Jesus so often refers to. Thank you for your continuing commitment to mission beyond our doors. I hope as we explore Stewardship in the next several weeks that we, together, will continue to dream what it means to GO & DO. Suzanne Castle
