2 Meeting of the Congregation A meeting of the congregation is called for Sunday, October 14th immediately following the 10 o clock church service for the purpose of electing an elder to a vacant seat on Session. Weekend Journey through the Past Would you like to show our beautiful church to the community? During the Somerset County Weekend Through the Past, there will be opportunities for you to help. Sign-ups will be available this weekend. The dates for the weekend are October 13 and 14, The specific times needed for volunteers for the Weekend are: Saturday, 10 a.m. - noon; Saturday, noon - 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Signs will be available this Sunday or you can Kathy Hobbs: kathyahobbs6@ .com. Thank you! The Old Presbyterian Graveyard The Bound Brook Presbyterian Church is also represented in Weekend Journey Through the Past by the Old Presbyterian Graveyard, Bound Brook's first cemetery. Tours and other fascinating information will be offered on both Saturday and Sunday. This historic two-acre site is located at the corner of East Street and East High Street, adjacent to Bound Brook Memorial Library. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Presbyterian Church was located on Main Street, and the churchyard served as its graveyard. Bound Brook Presbyterian Church was at the core of the Colonial community for a century and a constant influence on the lives of individuals and the course of town history for the next two centuries. Though the family names of those buried in the Old Presbyterian Graveyard only slightly overlap family names of present day church and community members, there is a thread of continuity uniting early residents with those who lived here in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This thread is manifested physically in the Old Presbyterian Graveyard. We can seek a connection to our Bound Brook forebears their names, family relationships, when and how long they lived, and if they were soldiers in American wars. From the poetry of epitaphs and gravestone art, we may get a sense of what mattered most to those still living when someone close to them was taken by death. Hannah Kerwin and her library colleague Mary Nelson have produced a generously illustrated history of the graveyard. You may peruse the volumes after church on October 7 and 14.

Dr. Wolf created the Friends for Health in Haiti clinic which took a direct hit by Hurricane Matthew 2 years ago. She will be reporting on the recovery work, the ongoing partnerships she has developed, and the long -range plans for the clinic. There will be an assortment of Haitian craft items for sale as well as Haitian coffee and Haitian vanilla. The program is jointly sponsored by the Kingston PC Mission Committee and the Presbyterian Women in New Brunswick Presbytery. Reservations are needed. Please contact Kingston Presbyterian Church at or Helen Burd at helenburd@msn.com. You may contact Doris Sabin for more information at d_sabin@verizon.net. We hope you will join us. Deadline is Oct. 22 NO CHARGE Dollars and Sense: Tax Savings and Charitable Giving On Sunday,Oct.28 the adult class meeting at 9am and then again after church will focus on ways to save on taxes and still be sensible and generous donors. Topics will include use of Required Minimum Distributions, bunching, donor advised funds and corporate matching gifts. We will have handouts and straightforward examples of how to make these techniques potentially work for you. Class will be led by Brooks Smith and Seana Zimmer. A minute for mission will be presented at the 5 pm Saturday service. Children, Youth, Handbell & Adult Choirs All the choirs are starting up for this program year. CHILDREN S CHOIR If you are new to us and have children in grades K-4, our children rehearse on Sunday mornings after the worship service, usually for about half an hour. If time permits, I start them on handchimes as an introduction to handbells. If you have any questions please see me. YOUTH CHOIR - Due to outside schedules & activities on Sunday, this choir is on hold. Hopefully, we can work a couple of rehearsals in once in awhile and then sing in church. See or me (tom@bbpc.org) if interested. ADULT HANDBELL CHOIR rehearses Thursday at 6:45-7:30. This is becoming an intergenerational choir. If you are an adult or youth and read music, please see me if you are interested in joining. ADULT CHOIR - We can always use singers. This group rehearses on Thursday from 7:30-9:15. I also have rehearsals during the week for those who can t make Thursday rehearsals. Any questions about any of these groups, see me or me at tom@bbpc.org
5 In Other News Spark (Sunday School): For children ages 3 5th grade, SPARK happens during church. Children leave for SPARK after the children s time and learn bible stories through arts & crafts, science & cooking rotations. ECHO, is our Sunday School Program for middle school students (grades 6-9). ECHO meets downstairs in the Cave during church. At ECHO students learn to make the teachings of the Bible practical for their own lives through, videos, discussion and storytelling. Caring Minister On Call: October 7-13: Rose Munroe College Student Updates: Please provide your college student s current address to the church office. Per Capita Have you paid yours yet? Per capita is an opportunity for all communicant members of the Presbyterian church to participate equally, responsibly, and interdependently by sharing the cost of coordination and evaluation of mission; and performing ecclesiastical, legislative, and judicial functions that identify a reformed church, while at the same time strengthening the sense of community among all Presbyterians. (General Assembly Minutes, Part 1, 1995) Each year the church is expected to pitch in for the greater good of our common work as Presbyterians. The per capita assessment is a per member fee (not per household) that is divided among our local Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly. Our Presbytery receives our per capita payments and is then required to pass on what is due to Synod and General Assembly based on the total church membership of the churches within its bounds as of the previous year. So, this year our Presbytery will be obligated, on behalf of BBPC, to pass on per capita dues based on a membership of over 550 members, even though we have reduced our roles just recently to approximately 470 members. Conversely, churches are NOT obligated in the same way Presbyteries are, to pay in full for each member. Churches are free to assess what they can reasonable afford. Some churches, such as ours, choose to pass their per capita dues on to its members, paying only what is collected rather than including the full per capita in its budget. For us this meant in 2017 that while we should have paid $18,600.72, we actually paid $3, (20% of what was owed.) You don t have to be a mathematician to see the heavy financial burden this inflicts on our Presbytery. This year s per capita has been set at $33.12 per member. If you haven t already, please consider making a contribution. Checks should be marked PER CAPITA in the memo, made out to BBPC. We will make sure your per capita contribution is passed on to New Brunswick Presbytery, and from there to Synod and General Assembly. Thanks. Weekly Calendar Saturday 5:00 p.m. Worship (Rev.
