November was an average month for the General Fund of pledged givings, however we re currently ahead of the budgeted income. Expenses exceeded income by $404 for November. Other income includes $3,800 transfer for parsonage furnace and $7,500 transfer for campaign expenses/consulting. 2. Expenses have outpaced income for 2017, and the Finance Committee is following both to ensure a financially healthy start to The less than budgeted Payroll expense is because of the open Music Director and Accompanist positions that were available currently, or throughout the year. 4. As of our meeting December 14th, 2017 Apportionments have been paid in full. 5. The SUMC 2018 Budget was finalized and approved at Council. It is available at the church office. 6. Amazon.Smiles has generated $10.32 for the General Fund from your online shopping. Shopping with SUMC $crip If you eat out, shop or buy groceries, then we ve got the cards for you It s Scrip! You can support our new church building fund, without spending any extra money. Through Scrip, we have access to over 700 merchants! You can find a list at or we have printed lists at church. So how does Scrip work? Our church buys the gift cards at a discount, but your card is for the full purchase amount you pay. The percentage of discount is a profit back to SUMC. All proceeds go to building the new sanctuary. Tell us what you need ordered, you pay us for it, and we order at least every third Sunday of the month, you will then have the card(s) the following Sunday. You can purchase on-hand cards at worship services to the following stores: Festival The Pig Woodmans Meijer Subway Four-Way Home Depot Fleet Farm Walmart Sam s Club Kwik Trip PaPa Murphy s Barnes & Noble ShopKo Shell Target CVS Dunkin Donuts Menards JoAnn Fabrics Walgreens Taco Bell Marcus Movie Theaters We have something for everyone! Youth Group Come join us on Wednesday nights 6:00pm! Remember to Save the Date... February is our Winter Retreat at Camp Uni. Please keep that weekend open. Pastor s Pencil As we move into the New Year, we celebrate the Epiphany. The Epiphany is better known as the coming of the wise men. It is a separate celebration from Christmas because the wise men didn t come until much later, about two years after the birth of Jesus. By this time Jesus was living in a house. The wisemen had seen the star of Bethlehem and believed it heralded the birth of a great king. So they organized a journey west to visit him. When they arrived they found the toddler Jesus and gave him expensive gifts of gold and spices. These gifts were given to honor Jesus, but they also served to support Jesus, and pay for travel to Egypt so that Jesus could grow up in safety, protected from Herod. As we celebrate the New Year, let s think about how we honor Jesus with our gifts. Part of that gifting is monetary, but on a deeper level, how do we use our talents and abilities for Jesus? The mission of Jesus depends on our willingness to use our talents in the work of the church. A second thing to think about it is that Jesus spent some of his early childhood as an immigrant in a foreign land. His family took him there for asylum to be protected from Herod, the unjust and violent leader of Palestine. What might that fact say about our attitudes about immigration? If Jesus family became immigrants, perhaps we can open our hearts to those who need the protection of our country from unjust rulers. We all need each other in the human family. Jesus family needed monetary assistance and to be welcomed as strangers. During this Epiphany season, let us consider how we might provide help and welcome to the strangers in our lives. Blessings on your New Year, Pastor Eric 4
