2 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Clever to note today, that Ezekiel the prophet (First Reading) received his call when he was thirty years old. He was a member of a priestly family and had been exiled and when it was his time to enter priestly service, he received a new vocation and in a fantastic vision, he sees the throne of God and one like a human figure (Ezekiel 1:27) and as the Lord speaks, the spirit enters Ezekiel and is told that even though he will sit among briers and thorns and scorpions, do not be afraid. In spite of the Israelites response to his prophesy, he MUST speak God s words. In today s Second Reading from 2 Corinthians, c. 12, Paul uses his own personal struggles as an ironic boast against the so-called super apostles. (cf. chapter 11 of 2 Corinthians). Through his physical limitations, God s power is made manifest as he prays only in his weakness is God s true strength visible. Today s Gospel describes Jesus not-so-warm welcome in his hometown of Nazareth. The townsfolk are astonished by his teaching and his wisdom and mighty deeds confuse them, Where did this man get all this? They (his hometown folks) presume to know all about him because he is the son of Mary and Joseph who live here (Nazareth). Throughout Mark s Gospel, Jesus is continually beset by opposition, the Pharisees criticize him and his own family is concerned for his mental and physical well-being. At this point in Jesus mission and ministry, ONLY THE DEMONS recognize who Jesus truly is! So how do we gratefully live the Word this week? With our eyes on the Lord to recognize and see our weaknesses AS gifts because they remind us to TURN TO GOD for wisdom, help and guidance. Our weaknesses become a SOURCE OF STRENGTH. Live like Paul When I am weak, then I am strong. True strength comes from finding the power of Christ s mercy and love deep within. Live and love deeply and with God within! From the FINANCE COUNCIL We completed the proposed Parish Budget for the Fiscal Year which began on July 1 st. The Business Office is working diligently to input the proposed Budget as well as completing the Fiscal Year End Report, due in the Diocesan Finance on August 15 th. Many thanks to the diligence of our Finance Council and in particular to lead accountant Deacon Tom Cully, in guiding the Council through some rather detailed line items. From my angle as Pastor, I am very proud of the work of EACH of our Finance Council Members and for their undying commitment to the financial stability of St. Mary Parish! They are true disciples of Grateful Living! PLEASE BE AWARE: I know many were very generous in helping the needy woman who stood begging outside the church doors this past Sunday morning, but PLEASE, your charity is best served NOT by giving money, but rather OFFERING a prayer and DIRECTING them to the PROPER organizations that are able to help and care for the needy. That situation was highlighted this week when the Police had to be called to physically remove them from the offices this week, threatening harm to our personnel. Father John

Just as his neighbors took offense at Him when He taught the Gospel, expect your neighbors to do the same. This opposition did not stop Jesus nor should it stop us. NO SOUL LEFT BEHIND Two weekends ago at Mass, all were invited to write the first names of those who they would like to take the next step in their walk with Jesus whether by meeting Christ for the first time, returning to active participation in the Faith, or deepening their growth to holiness. Young and old submitted names including some as Mom and Grandpa in a child s handwriting. Over 300 Cards were collected with over 1,200 names listed! Today at the end of Mass, the cards were distributed to Parishioners. If you took a card or two, THANK YOU for promising to pray for these individuals from now until Labor Day. One prayer is fine for multiple names on the Card. Please keep the cards in a convenient place to remind you to pray often. After Labor Day, these Cards will be returned and a Community Prayer Service will be offered at that time. May our prayers truly make a difference in the lives of these individuals a conduit for a Holy Encounter! Bible Study, Faith Sharing Bible study will meet in the chapel from 11:00am - 12pm on Tuesday. We will continue to explore the sin and forgiveness of the Chosen People through 2 Kings. Their story becomes our story as we remember our own call to serve the Lord. Come join us. No experience necessary. Bring your Bible and an open heart. Quiet Prayer This Tuesday Quiet Prayer will begin with Lectio Divina, to be followed with quiet prayer. Meet with us at 12:20pm and explore a type of prayer that allows us to listen to what God may be asking of us.

In the first reading, Ezekiel is told to prophesize to the Israelites. He says, Whether they heed or resist they shall know that a prophet has been among them. The second reading tells of Paul willingly living in hardship so that he can be humble in the strength of his Lord. The gospel echoes the first reading, where people in the synagogue are baffled by Jesus teachings, as they see him only as a human and not also as divine. Jesus is unable to perform any miracles because of the lack of faith. I have chosen one of my favorite contemporary hymns, I Will Choose Christ, to reflect on these readings. Being a part of the church is not automatic, believing and trusting that Jesus will come again is not an easy thing. It is a constant, confident choice that we have to make in order to be completely involved with our faith community. We are given the tools and means to participate in the faith, and it is our actions that bring us closer to Christ, and bring Christ to the world! Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for more information: ext 27. Help The FEST - We need you! FEST 2018 is just a few weeks away - Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 12 noon until 10:00pm. It s a day of faith - family - fun and it s all for FREE. It s our 18th Annual Catholic Family FESTival that takes place on the grounds of Borromeo and Saint Mary Seminary (28700 Euclid Avenue in Wickliffe).
