He named the boy Eugene Jerome Perdue. There is not much unusual about that, except that he had already named his other seven children Eugene Jerome Perdue, and three of them were girls! So the new baby became Eugene Jerome Perdue, VIII. When asked why he named each of his children after himself, he replied, I love me. It must be awfully confusing when someone calls his house and asks to speak to Eugene. Mr. Perdue says he has no trouble identifying his children, because he just refers to them by numbers. A typical conversation must sound something like this: Five, tell six to leave three alone, and tell two to give eight a bottle. I wonder what he calls his wife! I m glad that God isn t like Mr. Perdue. He knows each of us by name. And He promises each believer a new name when we get to heaven a perfect name to match the essence of our souls. God calls us by name, and not by number, because He loves us more than he loves Himself. I ll see you this Sunday in God s loving place.

UPDATE FROM THE CHAIR Cathy Meehan, Chair of the Congregation When members of Roser Community Church think about the busy season, the months of January, February and March most often come to mind. But for those of us who are here most of the year, the busy season starts in September. You can read throughout this issue of the Messenger about all of the programs and activities that take place in the fall. In addition, a lot of administrative work takes place this time of the year. Boards and Committees are back from summer breaks, so we are starting on budgeting and stewardship, buildings and grounds continue to need attention, job descriptions are being updated and employee evaluations are taking place. All of this as we continue to plan for the winter season and get ready to celebrate Advent and Christmas. Although life at Roser is busy, there is also excitement. The Church Planning Retreat on October 25 gave us a chance to celebrate the church we know and a chance to dream about how to make it even better. Dr. Bob is settling in as Pastor. He is active and involved in the life of the church and is frequently found smiling and saying Isn t it wonderful? We have so much to look forward to as we move into the future. To those of you who are here and working, thank you for your time and your efforts. The church would not be here without all of you. To those still away, we look forward to your return. As most of you know, I am a member of the choir. One of my favorite things about this time of the year is looking out over the congregation each Sunday and seeing who has returned to us and I always smile inside when I see a familiar face. Blessings to all! Linda Taylor Gianiotes, Chairperson of BREd BAYFEST The story reads: EAST MANATEE As they have done every day since the Ebola virus barreled into the West Africa nation of Liberia in May, David Dann and his wife, Annette, sit in their East Manatee home and wait for news via text message... David Dann, who has U.S. and Liberian citizenships, is president and founder of Christ s Victory International Mission of Liberia, and Annette Dann, who was born in Tennessee, is a pastor s wife, with all that includes... Several churches, however, support their African ministry, including First Baptist Church of Palmetto, the Danns said. When the Roser Computer room was originally set up, Larry and Linda Scott loaded up all the old computers into the van. The computers were given to the Danns to be shipped to Liberia and used by their congregation.

Again, thanks to all who volunteer, especially Marilyn Shirley, who has been doing the volunteer scheduling. Angel Tree Many children in Manatee County would not receive any Christmas gifts if not for our participation in this Salvation Army program. The Angel Tree is displayed in the Narthex during the month of November. Tags, representing children under the age of 12, are hung from the tree for you to take and shop for Christmas gifts for that special angel. Take a tag from the tree and a plastic bag. Please return your unwrapped gifts in the bag, secured with the tag by Sunday, November 30! 5 Church Women United Six of us were glad to be able to attend the October meeting at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, where we were pleased to see Pastor Sung Lee and his wife, Dr. Hope Lee again. They were excited about starting a new ministry called The Well in remodeled facilities there and are very happy to be working together again. The speaker, Ms. Vanessa Morris, of Selah Freedom, was very well informed and interesting, giving us a lot of information about the human trafficking that goes on especially in this area, and what we, as Christians, can do to help those trapped in it. Selah Freedom has a home at an undisclosed location where young women who have been so abused may live and learn homemaking skills, etc., and of God s love. The CWU theme for this year is WE ARE IN GOD S HANDS AND WE ARE GOD S HANDS. The next meeting is the World Community Day Celebration at Pathways Christian Fellowship, 329 6th Ave. W., in Bradenton, November 7 at 9:30. The topic is Through God, Our Hands Can Heal. It will be interesting too. The following Friday, November 14 at 9:00 am is the Migrant Tea at the Manatee United Methodist Church. That is when and where we take the layettes, quilts, clothes and toys that are then available for migrant families when they arrive in our county, and for their Christmas gifts. We welcome gifts from the congregation for the migrants and their children as well. Please call Peggy Nash, , so we can arrange transportation if you would like to go to either of these meetings.

The purpose of this non-profit Christian organization founded in 1982, is to offer charitable assistance to those persons in need on Anna Maria Island and/or members of one of the island congregations. The six island churches working together are: Church of the Annunciation, St. Bernard RC Church, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Roser Community Church, CrossPointe Fellowship and Harvey Memorial Church. A.I.D. accepts requests for financial help for island residents and members of island congregations. This is generally done on a one-time only basis to a particular client. A.I.D. assists island residents, individuals and families, with groceries through the A.I.D./Roser Food Pantry housed at Roser Church. Non-perishable groceries are available weekdays by appointment only (call ). Meal Baskets are made available to families in need at and Christmas. The Summer Backpack Program aids those needy families with students attending Anna Maria Elementary School with a weekly bag of non-perishables so that the children will have food during the summer vacation. This summer five families (17 AME students) needing this assistance were given cereal, juice, fruit, pancake mix, peanut butter, jelly, tuna, macaroni and cheese, and soup, as well as a $10 Publix certificate for milk and other perishables each week. These are students who depend on the school breakfast and lunch program for their food during the school year and without A.I.D. assistance would not have sufficient food during the summer break. 6 Katrina Lathrop 6 Geraldine Nichols 8 Cyndy Custis 9 Charles Whittaker 10 Jean Martin 10 Rodney Sullivan 10 Janet Walter 11 Ginger Braune 11 Gail Hecht 11 Reagan Walter 6 A.I.D. also sponsors and organizes annual worship services for the Ecumenical Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,, and National Day of Prayer. 8 COMMUNITY CHURCH 512 Pine Ave PO Box 247 Anna Maria FL OUR PROPOSED MISSION Loving Christ Sharing His Grace Serving All Rev. Dr. Robert O Keef Pastor Phyllis O Keef Interim Director of Music Ministries Kelley Tribble Transitional Church School Coordinator Bev Shepperson Church Administrator Charles Wade Facilities Administrator Matt Meehan Financial Administrator Cyndy Custis Church Secretary Hard to see a way out? Frustrated and not happy? Maybe you should meet one of Roser s Stephen Ministers. They will not judge but may just provide some valuable perspective... or at least a different way to look at things. Please call the Church office or JoAnne Moyer at NOTES from the Music Committee On Sunday, November 2, 2014, Jim Johnston retires as Director of Music Ministries at Roser Church. Jim has been with Roser for the past four years. He brought with him a vision of how he wanted the music ministry to look, as well as a strong background in organ playing and traditional church music, choir directing, leading children s music and directing a handbell choir. He has used all of his knowledge and experience to mold our program with new ideas and encouragement into a strong viable music ministry. We thank him for all of his efforts. For the last three years we have had a beautiful Cantata at Christmas and Lent with an orchestra ensemble accompanying the Chancel Choir. During our Roser Centennial year, Jim had a choral piece commissioned for the final event of the celebration. These musical experiences during our worship service have been very well received by the Roser Church family. Jim also created the Roser Concert series three years ago as a community outreach for Roser Church. These concerts have been enthusiastically received and attended by those on Anna Maria and throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties. We cannot forget the wonderful Anthems, Offertories and Prayer Responses that Jim selects each week of the year to enhance our worship experience. His expertise in choosing and playing an organ selection for the Introit, Prelude or Offertory has been his personal praise to God. He has encouraged us each week in whatever musical experience we are involved in to do our best in praise and worship to God. We have been so blessed to have Jim direct and teach us for the past four years. And yes, we will miss him. BUT, he has clearly earned his retirement. Thank You, Jim. Joy Bennington and the Roser Music Committee 8 DIED TO LIFE EVERLASTING Gene A.
