1 Church Life Welcome Home! West Hampton Baptist Church V o l u me 59, Is sue 4 WE HAVE NO KING BUT JESUS The Prince of Peace stood before the representatives of political power and colluding religion wearing a crown of thorns. Pilate said, "Behold the man." From the crowd there arose the lusty chant, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate taunted the chief priests for whom he had no respect: "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests didn't miss a beat: "We have no king but Caesar." There it is. Their true allegiance laid out on the table. (See John 19:12-17) Rewind a thousand years and we find Israel demanding that Samuel the prophet appoint them a king so they can be like all the other nations. Samuel was upset by this and prayed to the LORD. And the LORD said to Samuel, "Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you." (1 Samuel 8:7-8) The LORD tells Samuel to warn Israel about the ways of a king who rules over them. The LORD saw this coming, so he gave laws concerning future kings over Israel (Deuteronomy 17:14-20). The LORD gave laws to ensure that Israel would act different from the other nations: Israel's king must be chosen by the LORD; Israel may not be ruled by a foreigner; Israel's king may not acquire many horses (horses were exclusively used for war thus, many horses would equate great military might); Israel's king may not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold. Israel's king would meditate on these laws and learn to fear the LORD by keeping the law of the LORD. So that, "his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment...so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel." [v20] It's obvious the LORD wanted Israel to be different and set apart from the other nations. Other nations were ruled by oppressive kings who ruled from their thrones wielding power enforced by violence. The kings of other nations would chase their lustful desires and lord their wealth over their subordinates. Israel demanded a king like all the other nations, and they got what they asked for. Fast-forward back to Pilate's court, and we find the chief priests declaring their allegiance to a foreign king who wielded power enforced by violence. Pilate's rule was the power to crucify, and the high priest Caiaphas supported that rule. "So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross." The Prince of Peace was crucified, died, and was buried in a borrowed tomb. After three days, God vindicated his Son by raising him from the dead. Jesus is alive. Jesus is crowned KING of kings and LORD of lords. And now we have to pledge allegiance. Will we choose Caesar? Or will we choose Jesus? Will we choose the ways of the world? Or will we choose the Way, the Truth, and the Life? No one can serve two masters. We believe and confess Jesus is LORD, but do our lives reflect this confession? After all, faith should lead to action. We believe in our heart. We confess with our mouth. We must pledge allegiance through the stewardship of our time, money, talents, and energy. We have no king but Jesus. Now may our lives reflect this confession with all humility, grace, and love. Pastor Brian
