This week, which is set aside as the holiest week of the year, is a privileged time for us to prayerfully recall all that God has done for us. On Tuesday, Fr. Hite, Fr. Jeremy, and I will travel to our cathedral in Toledo where we will celebrate the Chrism Mass with Bishop Thomas. On this occasion, the bishop will bless and consecrate the oils which will be used for sacramental purposes throughout the coming year. On Holy Thursday, during the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper, we will receive these oils. Also at this Mass, we will experience the washing of the feet as we call to mind Jesus command to love one another as He has loved us. Most importantly, on Holy Thursday we remember and celebrate the gift of the Eucharist which Christ gave to us at the Last Supper. We will have the honor to remain in prayer with the Lord late into that night just as the Apostles were with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane. On Good Friday, we recall the Passion and Death of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we hear the Passion according to St. John, and as we walk with Jesus along the way of the cross, may we allow His love for us to pierce our hearts just as the lance pierced His heart as He was dying on the cross. On Holy Saturday, we remember Jesus in the tomb and experience the void felt by the Apostles as they mourned the death of Jesus. But that is not the end of the story! On Saturday night, we celebrate the Easter Vigil with great joy! The blessing of the Easter fire and water reminds us that Christ, Risen from the dead, gives us light and life. On this holy night, we call to mind all that God has done for us, His children, throughout salvation history. Our celebration culminates in the joy of the Resurrection and in our welcoming of our new brothers and sisters into the Catholic Church. Easter Sunday is fast-approaching. But, in order to rejoice fully at Easter, we must prepare ourselves as best we can during Lent. May this final week, this Holy Week, be a time of transformation, a time of walking with the Lord through the streets of Jerusalem to the hill of Calvary. Walking well with Jesus along the Way of the Cross is the best preparation for running with Peter and John to the empty tomb on Easter Sunday morning! Let us praise the Lord, give Him thanks, and pray for one another! Your seminarian, Andrew

If you wish to have your name appear an additional 4 week period, contact the Parish Center at In God s Arms Eileen Deehan TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What day is today? Ask most folks strolling home from church today and they will reply Palm Sunday. Not too long ago, today was known as the Second Sunday of the Passion, and in 1970 it was renamed Passion Sunday. This made some sense, since the procession recalling Christ s entry into Jerusalem is usually only celebrated once in a parish on this day, but the Passion is proclaimed solemnly at every liturgy. In its most recent incarnation, the name for this day includes both aspects of the celebration: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. In the United States today, most worshipers are provided with palm branches, although in northern Europe pussy willows are favored, and in Italy olive branches are the norm. When our calendar was reformed, the entire structure of the week to come was revised even as the traditional name, Holy Week, was retained. The major benefit of the restructuring of our calendar is to help us see that the Triduum, the great three days beginning at sunset this Thursday and extending until sunset on Easter Sunday, is at the heart of the Christian life. Today, as you ponder the Lord s Passion, you may consider your response to so great a gift. Centuries ago, good Christians vowed to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Today, at least once in your lifetime, promise to participate faithfully in the liturgies. Now begins the Church s annual baptismal retreat: don t be left out! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Schedule a Come and See Us Visitation Day that is convenient for you and your child. We look forward to your call! PASSION The word passion connotes deep, focused engagement. It also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence. The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year s history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The first Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday. This feast is based on the revelations that Jesus gave to St. Faustina ( ) about God s endless mercy. We will celebrate this feast on April 4 at St. Peter s with an Hour of Divine Mercy from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church. This hour will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Confessions will also be offered that day in the church from 1:00-3:00 p.m. There is a novena for the feast of Divine Mercy, which begins on Good Friday and runs for the nine days leading up to the feast. The usual hour of this prayer in 3:00 p.m. There will be someone in the church each day at that time (except Good Friday because of the service) if you wish to pray it in community. However, you are also invited to pray the novena on your own, preferably at 3:00 p.m., the hour of Christ s death. A pamphlet explaining the Novena, the Chaplet and the history of the Feast of Divine Mercy will be included in the bulletin next week. Join us in preparing for and celebrating this special day of Mercy. Jesus said to St. Faustina,...On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened.
