Tuesday 7pm Mass followed by the Novena to St Anthony PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THIS BOOKLET

St. Anthony of Padua ( ) Patron of the poor and of finding lost articles Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal and baptized Fernando. As a teenager he wanted to become a priest and joined the Augustinians. Not long after, he met a group of five Franciscan friars who were on their way to morocco to preach to the Muslims. They stirred his interest in their new order, and when those friars were later martyred, Fernando felt a great desire to imitate them. So he transferred to the Franciscans and was ordained soon after. Changing his name to Anthony he traveled throughout Italy and crowds flocked to hear his sermons. He had a gift for touching hearts through his preaching and as a result many people came to a conversion of life. Worn out by travel and fatigue, Anthony became ill and died at a young age. Many favors were reported through his intercession, and his fame grew even more after his death. His feast day is June 13th. (N.B. At the Shrine here in Hawthorn his feast is observed solemnly on the Sunday closest to June the 13th with Sung Masses, Procession, the blessing and distribution of Bread and other celebrations.) A NOTE ON THE DEVOTION OF THE NINE TUESDAYS On the Tuesday following the death of St. Anthony the people of Padua carried his body to its last resting-place in the church of our Blessed Lady, which was attached to the Franciscan friars at Padua. The occasion was marked by great splendor and enthusiasm, and the cortege moved through the city to the music of bells and joyous hymns. The day was marked, too, by an extraordinary number of miracles. The biographers of the saint tell us that the blind regained their sight, the deaf their hearing, and the lame the use of their limbs. Every grace and favor asked for in faith and confidence was granted. The people were so impressed by the wonderful things they had witnessed that they began to observe Tuesdays as days of special devotion in honor of their saint. However, as time went on the practice fell into disuse until, in 1616, St. Anthony himself revived it in the form of a novena of nine consecutive Tuesdays. In response to the prayers of a childless couple, he appeared to the wife and bade her visit his altar and pray before it on nine consecutive Tuesdays. This she did, and in the course of time became a mother.

ABOUT ST. ANTHONY S HAWTHORN Conceived originally as a project by an Italian Capuchin, Fr. Boniface Zurli, then constructed and brought to completion in 1960 s. With the help of donations and voluntary labour from generous members of the Italian community, this shrine is adorned with a variety of esteemed and priceless works of religious art. In addition to the abundant use and beauty of the rare and multi-coloured marble, there are the splendid mosaics including one depicting the Calvary scene which is perhaps the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Among other artistic features are the many statues carved in wood of the blessed virgin and particular saints held in veneration by migrants from various regions of Italy. Noteworthy, too, are the admirable paintings of the renowned Hungarian local artist, Bela de Valentin, applied to the suspended concave ceiling where even Saint Mary of the Cross finds a place. The image of St. Anthony, Parton of the shrine, which occupies a central position behind the main altar, was sculptured at Ortisei in northern Italy, sent to Padua where it was placed on the tomb of the saint, blessed and inserted with a precious relic and then shipped to Australia.

NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY FIRST DAY: THE WORD OF GOD Willingness to hear the Word of God is a sign of predestination. Just like the exile, who awaits and gladly hears news from his homeland, shows that he loves his country, so too the Christian who listens attentively to him who speaks of the heavenly fatherland may say that his heart is directed towards heaven. (St. Anthony) Let us pray Lord, through the intercession of Anthony, the Evangelical Doctor and messenger of your word, make us hear your gospel and faithfully live it out. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MIRACULOUS RESPONSORY 1. If then you ask for miracles, death, error, all calamities the leprosy and demons fly and health succeeds infirmities. Refrain The sea obeys and fetters break, And lifeless limbs you do restore; While treasures lost are found again, When young and old your aid implore.. 2. All dangers vanish at your prayer, and needs most dire do fly away; let those who know your power proclaim these deeds are yours, let Paduans say. Refrain 3. All glory to the Father be, the like be given to the Son, and to the Spirit equally: the persons three, the Godhead One. Refrain FOR EACH TUESDAY O glorious St. Anthony, Safe refuge of the afflicted and distressed, by miraculous revelation you have directed all those who seek aid to come to your altar with the promise that whoever visits it and there devoutly invokes you, for the nine consecutive Tuesdays, will feel the power of your intercession. Encouraged by this promise, I, a poor sinner, come to you, O powerful saint. With a firm hope I implore your aid, your protection, your counsel and your blessing. Obtain for me, I beseech you my request in this necessity (mention it) But if it should be opposed to the will of God and my spiritual welfare, obtain for me other graces that will be helpful for my salvation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be) V/. Pray for us, Blessed Anthony. R/. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, you glorified your faithful confessor Anthony, with the perpetual gift of working miracles. Graciously grant that what we confidently seek through his merits we may surely receive through his intercession. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 1

SECOND DAY: THE WISDOM OF THE LITTLE ONES The poor, the simple, the humble and the lowly thirst after the words of life and the waters of wisdom; they who inebriate themselves with vice, and the counselors of the mighty refuse the divine message! (St. Anthony) Let us pray Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we give you thanks because you have hidden the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven from the wise and understanding of this world and revealed them to the simple; make us worthy to stand before you and serve you faithfully. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) THIRD DAY: THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST Not many hear the Word of God willingly. The reason for this rests in the fact that the doctrine of Christ does not play a melody of adulation; it does not flatter the sinners and it does not promise earthly goods; instead it severely warns and teaches to mortify the flesh and despise the world. (St. Anthony) Let us pray Lord, following the example of your saints, may we accept your inspiration with a pure soul and mortify our hearts to adhere to you the true God, who lives forever and ever. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) FOURTH DAY: DIVINE WISDOM The Old and New Testaments contain the fullness of that understanding which alone can produce wise men. The words of Scripture protect us from burning thirst for the worldly prosperity, from carnal concupiscence, and from diabolical suggestions, This wisdom teaches us to love God, despise the world, and dominate the passions. (St. Anthony) Let us pray Lord God, through the intercession of Anthony of Padua, may we be filled with heavenly knowledge. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) FIFTH DAY: THE SWEETNESS OF GOD When a crystal is touched or struck by the rays of the sun, it gives forth brilliant sparkles of light. When the man of faith is touched by the light of God s grace, he too must shine with his good words and deeds, and so bring God s light to others. (St. Anthony)

Let us pray God, grant that with our holy Miracle Worker, we come to taste your sweetness and delight in doing your will. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) SIXTH DAY: CHRISTAIN WITNESS He speaks well who with actions witness what he announces with his mouth. Whoever distributes faithfully the bread of the Word of God and does not hide the truth will be blessed now and in the future. Christ says: I am the truth! Whoever preaches the truth affirms Christ; who conceals the truth, denies Christ. (St. Anthony) Let us pray Lord, by means of your servants you give us the bread of the word. May we receive it with a pure soul and witness to it in the world for your glory and for the salvation of our brothers and sisters. You live and reign for ever and ever Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) SEVENTH DAY: THE SUFFERINGS CHRIST The contemplation of the sufferings of Christ renders us indifferent to the joys and pleasures of the world. When, with the eyes of faith, I see my God nailed to the cross, and given gall and vinegar to drink, everything here below loses its attraction for me and I experience my nothingness. (St. Anthony) Let us pray Lord Jesus, you died and rose to a new life for us. May we share in your mystery and take part in the joy of your resurrection. You live and reign with the Father and the Holy spirit. God forever and ever. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) EIGHTH DAY: THE VALUE OF TIME The Lord gave you time so that you might work for your salvation, but you may have made it a private property. The day will come when the Lord will take back what you usurped. Do not waste the time that the Lord, in his goodness, gave you to find forgiveness, acquire grace, do penance and merit heavenly glory! (St. Anthony) Let us pray God, in your goodness, you gave us these years so that we might live and fill our time with those things which last forever. May we be faithful to your gift. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1).

NINTH DAY: THE HEAVENLY JERUSALEM Do not turn to the right or to the left, but walk along the golden road. Fix your attention on the heavenly Jerusalem, towards which you are heading. Keep this hope alive in your heart and you will always be a friend of God. (St. Anthony) Let us pray Almighty God, you made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. May we, your children, be faithful pilgrims towards our heavenly fatherland. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Responsary and prayer for each Tuesday (page 1) Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy! Christ, have mercy, Christ, have mercy! Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy! Christ, hear us, Christ graciously hear us! God, the father of heaven, Have mercy on us! Strengthen your people to live by his example so that they may come to possess the joys if heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen PRAYER FOR RECOVERY OF LOST ARTICLES Glorious St. Anthony, for centuries you have exercised your God-given power of finding what was lost. Help me to recover God s grace, and make me zealous in the service of God and in the practice of virtue. Let me find whatever I have lost, thus showing me the presence of your goodness. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be)

1. ABIDE WITH ME Abide with me; fast flows the eventide: the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide: when other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life s little day; earth s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see: O thou who changest not, abide with me. I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter s power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven s morning breaks, and earth s vain shadows flee;

in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Henry Francis Lyte ( ) 2. ALL CREATURES OF OUR GOD All creatures of our God and King lift up your voice and with us sing alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise Him, O praise Him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Dear mother earth, who day by day unfolds rich blessings on our way, O praise Him, alleluia! The flowers and fruits that in thee grow, let them His glory also show; O praise Him, O praise Him alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! And all ye men of tender heart, forgiving others, take our part, O sing ye alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and on Him cast your care; O praise Him, O praise Him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Let all things their Creator bless, and worship Him in humbleness O praise Him, alleluia Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son and praise the Spirit, Three in one; O praise Him, O praise Him alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! St. francis of Assisi, Tr. By William H. Draper, ALL PEOPLE THAT ON EARTH All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell; Come ye before Him and rejoice. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, Lord and bless His Name always, for it is seemly so to do. For why the Lord our God is good; His mercy is forever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood and shall from age to age endure Psalm 99 (100); William Kethe, d.c ALL THAT I AM All that I am, all that I do, All that I ll ever have, I offer now to you All that I dream, all that I pray, All that I ll ever make, I give to you this day. Take and sanctify these gifts For your honour, Lord; Knowing that I love and serve you is enough reward. Sebastian Temple 5. Alleluia, King eternal, You the Lord of lords we own; Alleluia, born of Mary, earth Your footstool, heaven Your throne: You within the veil have entered robed in flesh, our great high priest; You on earth both priest and victim In the Eucharistic Feast William Chatterton Dix: AMAZING GRACE Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come: tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and my portion be As long as life endures John Newton

26. FILL MY HOUSE Fill my house unto the fullest, Eat My bread and drink My wine, The love I bear is held from no-one All I own and all I do, I give to you. Take my time unto the fullest, Find in me the trust you seek, Take my hands to you outstretching. All I own and all I do, I give to you. Christ Our Lord with love enormous, From the Cross His lesson taught, Love all men, as I have loved you. All I own and all I do, I give to you. Join with me as one in Christ-love, May our hearts all beat as one, May we give ourselves completely. All I own and all I do, I give to you. Peter Kearney 27. FIRMLY I BELIEVE Firmly I believe and truly God is Three and God is One; and I next acknowledge duly manhood taken by the Son. And I trust and hope most fully in that manhood crucified; and each thought and deed unruly do to death, as He has died. Simply to his grace and wholly life and light and strength belong, and I love supremely, solely, Him the holy, Him the strong. And I hold in veneration, for the love of Him alone, holy church as his creation, and her teachings, as His own. Adoration aye be given with and through the angelic host, to the God of earth and heaven, Father, Son and Holy ghost. John Henry Newman, FOR ALL THE SAINTS For all the saints who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might, thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia, alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them, the victor s crown of gold. Alleluia, alleluia! O blest communion! Fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, alleluia! From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,

singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia! William Walsham How GENTLE AS SILENCE Oh, the love of My Lord is the essence of all that I love here on earth. All the beauty I see He has given to me and his giving is gentle as silence. Every day, every hour, every moment, have been blessed by the strength of his love At the turn of each tide He is there at my side, and His touch is as gentle as silence. There ve been times when I ve turned from His presence, and I ve walked others paths, other ways. But I ve called on His name in the dark of my shame, and His mercy was gentle as silence. Estelle White 30. GLORY AND PRAISE Glory and praise to our God, Who alone gives light to our days. Many are the blessings He bears to those who trust in His ways. We the daughters and sons of Him Who built the valleys and plains, praise the wonders our God has done in ev ry heart that sings. In His wisdom he strengthens us, like gold that s tested in fire. Through the power of sin prevails our God is there to save. Ev ry moment of ev ry day our God is waiting to save, always ready to seek the lost, to answer those who pray. Psalam 65, 66; Dan Schutte, b GODHEAD HERE IN HIDING 1. Godhead here in hiding, Whom I do adore Masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more, see, Lord, at Thy s service low, all lost in wonder at the God thou art. 2. Seeing, touching, tasting are in thee deceived, How says trusty hearing? That shall be believed; What God s Son hath told me, take for truth I do; Truth Himself speaks truly, or there s nothing true. 3. On the Cross thy Godhead Made no sign to men; Here Thy very Manhood

Steals from human ken; Both are my confession, Both are my belief, And I pray the prayer of the dying thief. 4. I am not like Thomas Wounds I cannot see, but can plainly call Thee Lord and God as he; this Faith each day deeper be my holding of, daily make me harder hope and dearer love. 5. O Thou our reminder of Christ crucified, living Bread, the life of us for whom he died, lend this life to me then; feed and feast my mind, there be Thou the sweetness man was meant to find. 6. Jesus, whom I look at Shrouded here below, I beseech Thee send me What I long for so, Some day to gaze on Thee Face to face in light And be blest for ever With Thy Glory s sight. St. Thomas Aquinas, Tr G. Manley Hopkins, GOD OF MERCY God of Mercy and Compassion Look with pity upon men; Father, let me call Thee Father, Tis Thy Child returns to Thee. Chorus: Jesus, Lord, I ask for mercy; Let me not implore in vain; All my sins I now detest them, Never will I sin again. By my sins I have deserved Death and endless miser, Hell with all its pains and torments, And for all eternity. Chorus: By my sins I have abandon d Right and claim to heaven above, Where the saints rejoice for ever In a boundless sea of love Chorus: See Our Saviour, bleeding, dying, On the Cross of Calvary; To that Cross my sins have nail d Him, Yet He bleeds and dies for me. Chorus: 33. HAIL QUEEN OF HEAVEN E. Vaughan C.SS.R., 1908 Traditional French Melody Hail, Queen of Heave n, the Ocean star, guide of the wand rer here below, thrown on life s surge, we claim Thy care save us from peril and from woe. Mother of Christ, Star of the sea, Pray for the wand rer, pray for me. O gentle, chaste and spotless Maid, we sinners make our prayers through Thee remind Thy Son, that He has paid the price of our iniquity. Virgin most pure, star of the Sea, Pray for the sinner, pray for me.

And while to Him who reigns above, in Godhead One, in persons Three, the source of life, of grace, of love homage we pay on bended knee: Do Thou, bright Queen, Star of the Sea, pray for thy children, pray for me. John Lingard, , alt. 34. HAIL MARY: GENTLE WOMAN Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blest is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen Gentle woman, quiet light, Morning star, so strong and bright, Gentle Mother, peaceful dove, Teach us wisdom; teach us love. You were chosen by the Father; you were chosen for the Son. You were chosen from all women and for women, shining one. Blessed are you among women, Blest in turn all women, too. Blessed they with peaceful spirits. Blessed they with gentle hearts. Hail Mary, alt.; Carey Landry 35. HAIL REDEEMER Hail, Redeemer, King divine! Priest and Lamb, the throne is Thine, King, whose reign shall never cease, Price of everlasting peace. Angels, saints and nations sing Praised be Jesus Christ, our King; Lord of life, earth, sky and sea, King of love on Calvary. King, whose name creation thrills, rule our minds, our hearts, our wills, till in peace each nation rings with Thy praises, King of kings King, most holy, king of truth, raise the lowly, guide the youth; Christ, Thou King of glory bright, be to us eternal light. Patrick Brennan C.S.S.R., , alt 36. HARK! THE HERALD Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King; Peace on earth, and merc mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th angelic host proclaim: Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King!

Christ by the highest heav n adored Christ the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold Him come, offspring of the virgin s womb: veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th incarnate deity, pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hail, the heav n born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, ris n with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. Charles Wesley, , alt. 37. HERE I AM, LORD I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save I who make the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heat. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I spend? 38. HOLY GOD Isaiah 6; Dan Schutte, b Holy God, we praise Thy Name; Lord of all, we bow before Thee! All on earth Thy scepter claim, All in heav n above Thee; infinite Thy vast domain, everlasting is Thy reign. Hark! The loud celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising, Cherubim and Seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising; Fill the heav ns with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy lord. Lo! Th apostles all proclaim Christ is Lord, His Name be hallowed ; Prophets swell the loud refrain, and the white robed martyrs follow; and from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on. Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy spirit, three we name Thee, While in essence only One, Undivided God we claim Thee; and adoring bend the knee, while we own the mystery. Ascr.To Ignaz Franz, Tr. By Clarence Walworth, ,alt

39. HOW GREAT THOU ART O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder Consider all the works Thy hand hath made. I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder, Thy pow r throughout the universe displayed: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee. How Great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee. How Great Thou art! How great Thou art! And when I think: that God his son not sparing Sent Him to die I scarce can take it in: That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died, to take away my sin: When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home what joy shall fill my heart! Then shall I bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, My God howgreat Thou art! Stuart K. Hine 40.I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall not hunger, he who believes in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father draw him. Refrain And I will raise him up. and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and he who eats of this bread, he shall live forever, he shall live forever. Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of his blood, and drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you. I am the Resurrection I am the life. He who believes in me, even if he die, he shall live for ever. John 6; Suzanne Toolan, SM, b IMMACULATE MARY Immaculate Mary, our Hearts are on fire. That title so wondrous

fills all our desire! Ave, ave, ave Maria! Ave, ave, ave Maria! Predestined for Christ by eternal Decree, God willed You both Virgin, and Mother to be. Ave... We pray for God s glory may His Kingdom come, we pray for His Vicar, our Father in Rome. Ave.. We pray for our Mother the Church upon earth, and bless dearest Lady, the land of our birth. Ave.. Jeremiah Cummings, ( ) & Brian Foley, (b. 1919) 42. ISAIAH 49: I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU I will never forget you my people I have carved you on the palm of my hand I will never forget you, I will not leave you orphaned. I will never forget my own. Does a mother forget her baby? Or a woman the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, Yes even if these forget I will never forget my own. Carey Landry 43. JESUS, MY LORD Jesus, my Lord, my God, my all, how can I love Thee as I ought? and how revere this wondrous gift, So far surpassing hope or thought? Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore; Oh, make us love Thee more and more; Oh, make us love Thee more and more. Had I but Mary s sinless heart to love Thee with, my dearest king, Ohm with what bursts of fervent praise Thy goodness, Jesus, would I sing. Ah, see within a creature s hand the vast Creator deigns to be, resposing, infant-like, as though on Joseph s arm, or Mary s knee. Thy Body, Soul and Godhead all; O mystery of love divine! I Cannot compass all I have, for all Thou hast and art are mine. Sound, sound His praises higher still and come, ye angels, to our aid; tis God, tis God, the very God, whose pow r both us and angels made. Frederick William Faber, JOY TO THE WORLD! Joy to the world! The Lord is come; let earth receive her king; let ev ry heart prepare Him room, and heav n and nature sing, and heav n and nature sing, and heav n, and heav v and nature sing. Joy to world! the Saviour reigns; let all our songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

repeat the sounding joy repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace, and make the nations prove the glorious of his righteousness, and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love. Psalm 98; Isaac Watts, LET ALL MORTAL FLESH Let all mortal flesh keep silence and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded for with blessings in his hand Christ our God to earth decendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings yet born of Marty, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, in the body and the blood, he will give to all faithful his own self for heav nly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At his feet the six-winged seraphs, cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord most high! Liturgy of St. James, 5th C,; Para. By Gernad Moultrie, MAKE ME A CHANNEL Make me a channel of your Peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring Your Love. Where there is injury, Your Pardon. Lord. And where there s doubt, true Faith in you Make me a channel of your peace. Where there s despair in life, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, only light. And where there s sadness, ever joy. O Master, grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand. To be loved as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of Your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned. In giving to all men that we receive, And in dying that we re born to eternal life Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, : Sebastian Temple, MARY CROWNED Mary, crowned with living light, Temple of the Lord, Place of peace and holiness,

Shelter of the word. Mystery of sinless life In our fallen race, Free from shadow you reflect Plentitude of grace. Virgin-mother of our God, Lift us when we fall, Who named upon the cross Mother of us all. Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Heaven signs your praise; Mary magnifies your name Through eternal days. Stanbrook Abbey Hymnal 48. MAY THIS LENTEN DISCIPLINE May this Lenten discipline, Which we undertake with love, Turn our minds to things above. Sin has sundered us from God, Selfish we have grown and cold, Foolish were the ways we trod, Evil habits akeep their hold. Now we fast we may feast Where the lord of Life presides; May our bread which he provides. As we keep this Lent with Prayer And from pleasures are withdrawn, Minds and bodies we prepare For the joy of Easter dawn. James Philip McAuley ( ) 49. NOW THANK WE Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom the world rejoices; who, from our mother s arms, has blest us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours to-day. O may this bounteous God Through all our loves be near us, with ever joyful hearts, and blessed peace to cheer us; and keep us his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next. All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given the Son, and Spirit blest, one Lord in highest heaven: the One eternal God, whom earth and heav n adore for thus it was, is now and shall be evermore. Martin Rinkard, Tr. Catherine Winworth, O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL O Come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come and behold Him born the king of Angels: O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! True God of true God, Light of Light eternal, Lo. He abhors not the virgin s Womb: Son of the Father, Begotten, not created: John francis Wade, c ; Tr. By Frederick Oakeley, , alt 51. O COME EMMANUEL O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lowly exile here Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O Come, Thou wisdom from on high And order all things far and nigh; To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in Her ways to go. O come, Thou holy Lord of might Who to Thy tribes on Sinai s height In ancient times didst give the Law In cloud and majesty and awe. Veni, veni Emmanuel; Latin 9th C.; Tr. By john M. Neale ,alt 52. O GENTLE SAINT To Christ, our king, we sing this hymn Our grateful hearts we raise, for Anthony, before His throne exults in joy and grace. He followed close the father s Word; from Him he never turned. His miracles, a light to all, To faith the lost recall. O gentle Saint, tell Him our needs; His children, too are we, o ask Him now to grant our prayers, and we at peace shall be. This grace we beg of God on high, the Father with the Son, the Holy Spirit of their Love, both now, and evermore. 53. O GOD WE GIVE Anon O God, we give ourselves today With this pure Host to Thee, The selfsame gift which Thy dear Son Gave once on Calvary. Entire and whole, our life and love With heart and souls and mind, For all our sins and faults and needs, Thy church and all mankind. His very body, offered up,

A gift beyond all price He gives to us, that we may give In loving sacrifice. O Lord who took our human life, As water mixed with wine, Grant through this Sacrifice that we May share Thy Life divine. Nye S.J. 54. O SACRAMENT MOST HOLY O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, All praise and all thanksgiving, Be every moment Thine. O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, All Praise And all Thanksgiving, Be every moment Thine. 55.ONE BREAD, ONE BODY One bread, one body, one Lord of all, one cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, through-out the earth, we are one body in this one Lord. Gentile or Jew, Servant or free Woman or man, no more. Many the gifts many the works one in the Lord of all. Grain for the fields, scattered and grown, gathered to one, for all. 1 Cor. 10:16; 17, 12:4, Gal 3.28; the Didache 9; John Foley, SJ, b ONLY A SHADOW The love we have for You, O Lord, is only a shadow of Your love for us; only a shadow of Your love for us, Your deep abiding love. The bread we take and eat, O Lord, is Your body broken and shared with us; Your body broken and shared with us; the gift of your great love. Our lives are in Your hands, Our lives are in Your hands. Our love for You will grow, O Lord; Your light in us will shine Our own belief in You, O Lord, is only a shadow if Your faith in us; only a shadow of your faith in us; Your deep and lasting faith. The dreams we share today, O Lord, are only a shadow of Your dreams for us; only a shadow of Your dreams for us; if we but follow you. Refrain The joy we share today, O Lord,

is only a shadow of Your joys for us; only a shadow of Your joys for us; when we meet face to face. Refrain Carey Landry 57. OPEN OUR EYES Open my eyes Lord Help me to see your face Open my ears Lord help me to see Open my ears Lord Help me to hear your voice Open my eyes Lord Help me to hear Open my heart Lord Help me to love like you Open my ears Lord Help me to love I live within you deep in your heart of love I live within you rest now in me Jesse Manibusanc 58. POWER OF YOUR LOVE Lord, I Come to you. Let my heart be changed, renewed. Flowing from the grace that I ve found in You. And Lord I ve come to know the weaknesses I see in me Will be stripped away by the power of your love. Hold me close, let your love surround me. Bring me near draw me to Your side. And as I wait, I ll rise up like the eagle, and I will soar with you. Your Spirit leads me on in the power of Your love. Lord unveil my eyes, let me see You face to face. The Knowledge of your love, as You live in me. Lord renew my mind, as your will unfolds in my life. In living every day, in the power of Your love. Geoff Bullock 59. PRAISE TO THE LORD Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, The king of creation! O my soul, praise Him, For He is your health and salvation; Come all you who hear, Now to His altar draw near, Join in profound adoration. Praise to the Lord, Let us offer our gifts at His altar; Let not our sins and transgressions Now cause us to falter; Christ the high priest Bids us all join in His feast, Victims with Him on the altar. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in us adore Him! all that has life and breath, come now in praises before Him! let the amen sound from His people again,
