No previous experience is necessary. Training will be provided over two Saturdays in May. Readers are scheduled three times per quarter, approximately 12 times per year. Reading at Mass is a wonderful service to our parish that is personally very gratifying! New Eucharistic Ministers Needed St. Mary Magdalen needs Eucharistic Ministers for the Saturday 5:30 p.m. Vigil Mass and the 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Masses. No previous experience is necessary. 4 Parish News & Events Endow Endow is a Catholic educational program that brings women together to discover their Godgiven dignity and to understand their role in humanizing and transforming society. The Endow study group meets weekly over an eight week period. No homework is required. "Aquinas for Beginners" will meet Fridays at 7:00 p.m. in Norton Hall, beginning May 1st. Berkeley Food Pantry Collection The Food Pantry Committee would like to thank everyone for your generous support of the Berkeley Food Pantry. The following is a summary of our support over the last couple of months: March: 303 pounds April: 278 pounds The Berkeley Food Pantry is extremely grateful for all that we have provided. You will still be able to drop off food before 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 4th at the regular drop-off locations in the church or at the parish office. Sunday Dinner for the Poor and Homeless The First Sunday Dinner for the Poor and Homeless is this weekend. Please consider donating an hour or two of your time. We set up/cook from 12:00-1:30 p.m., serve at 2:45 p.m. and clean up at 3:30 p.m.. We especially need volunteers to clean up. We also welcome any desserts you can bring by 1:30 p.m.. Mission Dinner Community The Mission Dinner Community has its last two dinners of the cycle this year to raise funds for global poverty causes, and to plan partnership steps with organizations that minister to the poor and underprivileged. By participating with a suggested donation of $20 per adult and $5 per child, you ll get a great meal, meet great folks from the parish, and support great causes. The last dinner for this cycle will be May 17, 2015 and where we hope to have a visit from a member of our sister parish. We meet in Norton Hall at 6:00 p.m. for appetizers, with dinner at 7:00 p.m.. Please join us in honoring Bill Campbell, KM and John P. Christian, KM, two lay Catholics who, like us, are deeply committed to the evangelization of our culture. We will celebrate Mass together and enjoy an elegant dinner while supporting DSPT and Dominican education. DSPT provides the philosophical and theological formation for Dominicans and other candidates for the priesthood and for lay men and women for the sake of their secular vocations. 8th Annual Day at the Races Saturday, May 16th Golden Gate Fields 1100 Eastshore Hwy, Berkeley (510) Dominican Sisters Vision of Hope invite you to the 8th Annual Day at the Races. This year s event will include the exciting Silent Auction with specialty baskets for sports fans and gourmet dinners, fine wines and some interesting and unique trips. Vision of Hope is looking forward to setting new records for both attendance and benefits for the children in their eight inner-city Vision of Hope schools. The Sisters hope to see you there! A new Sanctuary movement in the East Bay Many will remember that Bay Area churches offered sanctuary to refugees who flooded into the area during the height of the civil wars that raged across Central America in the 1980's. Today, a new Sanctuary Movement is responding similarly to the current humanitarian crisis of people, including thousands of children, who are fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries. At the urging of Fr. Kieran, a group of St. Mary Magdalen parishioners are exploring the various ways in which we could get involved. We are brainstorming with the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant and Catholic Charities of the East Bay to decide what we might do to help. If this is a project that you would like to work on, please join us for a meeting in the parish Rectory on the second Friday of every month from 4:00 to 5:00p.m.. 6 Faith & Spirituality Religious Vocations An excerpt from Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father FRANCIS When Saint Paul approached the apostles in Jerusalem to discern whether he was running or had run in vain (Gal 2:2), the key criterion of authenticity which they presented was that he should not forget the poor (Gal 2:10). This important principle, namely that the Pauline communities should not succumb to the self-centered lifestyle of the pagans, remains timely today, when a new self-centered paganism is growing. We may not always be able to reflect adequately the beauty of the Gospel, but there is one sign which we should never lack: the option for those who are least, those whom society discards. Sometimes we prove hard of heart and mind; we are forgetful, distracted and carried away by the limitless possibilities for consumption and distraction offered by contemporary society. This leads to a kind of alienation at every level, for a society becomes alienated when its forms of social organization, production and consumption make it more difficult to offer the gift of self and to establish solidarity between people.
