1 S a c r e d H e a r t A c a d e m y A Ministry of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish ACADEMICALLY ENRICHING PASSIONATELY CATHOLIC Parent Weekly Note Letter from the Principal D ear Parents and Friends, I want to thank the 145 families who completed and turned in the Catholic Identity survey sent out a few weeks ago. We want to partner with our families on their spiritual journey and provide opportunities for all of us to deepen our faith and prayer life. The information on the surveys indicates what we are doing well, what we need to improve, and ideas we could incorporate. Once the surveys are tallied, we will send out a summary report to parents communicating our findings. You may be wondering what we do as a faculty and staff to deepen our faith. We begin with the mindset that we are all religion teachers. Some of us may not teach the content, but we all model our faith through our actions and words whether it is in the classroom or playground. We begin each day praying together in my office before school begins with a different staff member leading prayer for the week. Our school year begins with an annual Faculty/Staff spiritual retreat. During the season of Advent and Lent we have prayer partners and pray for them daily. Recently Fr. Hau led a beautiful Lenten retreat for the staff that included Adoration. We attend diocesan Catholic identity in-services with educators from Catholic schools within the diocese. Many staff serve as lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, minister to the sick, homebound and homeless, are involved with restorative justice and Catholic Charities. We are fortunate to have a staff member who serves as our Campus Minister and educates youth as well as adults. One of the most important ways we deepen our faith is by living out our vocation as Catholic educators. We are blessed to be able to share our faith with our students, prepare them to lead Masses, Penance services, Stations of the Cross, Rosaries, and morning assembly. As a school community we begin and end our day with prayer and prayer is recited over the intercom before lunch. Most importantly, we pray for you, our families and we ask that you pray for us. Together we strengthen our Catholic identity and Catholic community we have at Sacred Heart. 2 Faith Reflection: Mercy The Beauty of Our Young Faith Reflection: Mercy The Beauty of Our Young Whether you called the Laetare Sunday vestments worn by Fr. Erik rose or pink we are in the 4th week of Lent; we are very close to Easter Sunday and that is something to rejoice over. The rose vestments aren t worn just to remind us to rejoice because we are more than half way through Lent. Seeing rose vestments can also startle us out of any Lenten routine that might have taken hold. Routines are good, but we can easily go into autopilot mode and forget why we are doing what we are doing. We can be so focused on avoiding the temptation to resume what we ve giving up, or we can be focused on how can we continue with something we have chosen to add during Lent when faced with things that conspire against it, that we can forget the greater reason for our Lent journey; we are striving to be closer to our Lord. Our Lent sacrifices and routines are ways we can draw closer to Him who is our very center and rejoice in the knowledge that God is rich in mercy because of his great love for us (cf. Ephesians 2:4), but we must be attentive to our routines, not dulled by them. Our 7th grader tells us ways to draw closer to God and prays that we all will strive to be closer to God for He has a plan for each of us and know what is best. Our 7th grader gives us much to rejoice over. Religion Essay by Alex C. In our faith there are many things that can help strengthen and keep it active and living. One thing that can help this is by following God s laws. This means to follow his Ten Commandments and to fulfill your duties to God. One example of this is how we should go to Church every Sunday. By doing this we honor God s Third Commandment, Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy (Exodus 20:8). Another way we can do this is by following God s calling for us. If God calls us to become a priest, teacher, deacon, doctor, or another profession, we should follow that call, as God has a plan and knows what s best for us. We should also never use God s name in vain. God tells us this through the Second Commandment and should always say his name with respect and admiration. God also tells us how to live through the Bible. For example, we should pray often so that we can be more connected with God. This will help us to feel and be closer to God. Another way we can live the life God wants for us it by trusting in God. By doing this we are able to not worry about the past or future, but instead to focus on the present. We should also read the Bible often so that we can understand God s message for us. We should apply these messages in the Bible to our everyday life. For example, if another person is being hurt or bullied we should always stand up for them, even if it is someone we dislike. We should strive to be like the Good Samaritan in Jesus parable. I am striving to do all of these things to keep my faith active and living as well as stronger. I also do other things to strengthen my faith. For example, I am currently an altar server at Saint Bernardine Church in San Bernardino. I also help with the Religious Education program there. I go to mass at least once per week and attend a private school that focuses on religion. My hope is that everyone will strive to be closer to God and to strengthen and keep their faith active and living. I also hope that God will help me to be closer to him and to help me understand his word. Miss Morrison puts much thought into the Cinema For the Soul movie each month, and appropriately enough she has chosen Risen for this month on the edge of Easter. Come Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. to the Olive parish hall for a manhunt that continues to this day some search for this man to know him better while others join the manhunt to destroy him. All who seek will find him, what differs is how we each respond when he s found. This Saturday is the outdoor Mass of Life and Reparation on Commercenter near Planned Parenthood. 3 Announcements Intent to Return to SHA The Notice of Intent to Return to Sacred Heart Academy is due March 16, If you haven t submitted your form, please do so in order to keep your spot for the new school year Jeans for Jesus $2.00 This Friday, March 16th is Jeans for Jesus $2.00 for top and pants/skirts. Proceeds go to the Go Fund ME account for the Mendoza baby. Eureka Street School Entrance Closure One day the week of March 8th through 16th the Eureka Street school entrance will be closed in the morning. The Gas Co. will be working on the gas meter. An Iris Message will be sent out when the Gas Co. notifies the school what day the work will be done. LENTEN RICE BOWLS By now, your family has hopefully worked together to contribute to the Lenten Rice Bowl drive. Please keep in mind that during the season of Lent, we are called to be especially generous as we share our time, talent and treasure with those less fortunate. Rice Bowl donations should be sent to school by Friday, March 23rd. All money donated sent directly to Catholic Relief Services. 4 Tdap Booster for Students Entering 7th Grade The school requires that all students entering 7th grade get the Tdap Booster. If your child hasn t received the booster, schedule an appointment. If your child has received the Tdap booster, please submit proof of immunization to the school office. March 14th through March 19th Promotion Code: 20OFFMAR18 School Ties Are now available at the school office for $17.00 each. They come in two sizes 12 and 16 with clip. COPY PAPER NEEDED! If you are in need of parent hours, you may purchase copy paper and bring it into office. For every $25 spent equals one hour. Save your receipt and submit it in with the Parent Log Sheet.

5 Emergency Lunches Lunchthyme is no longer giving credit for emergency lunches. Lunches will be given if called in before 9:00a.m. and exact change of $6.00 is given the day lunch is served.
