3 PARISH NEWS AND EVENTS: Seminary Choir: NEXT Sunday, March 25 th (Annunciation) the St. Tikhon Seminary Men s Choir will be visiting our parish and will be singing the responses at the Divine Liturgy. This annual visit is anticipated by all, please invite your family and friends to come and see and hear. Parish Fish Dinner: Will be held NEXT Sunday, March 25 th following Divine Liturgy. Please see the sign up list in the vestibule to help in our preparations. Cost is $10 for adults & children under 12 are free. Please note proceeds raised will be donated to the Seminary Housing Project. The menu will consist of Haddock, fish sticks for younger children, rice pilaf, stir fry vegetables, and dessert. Pascha Bread Baking Schedule: The following is the work schedule for Easter Pascha Bread baking: Set-Up Friday, March 23 at 6:30 pm. Baking Saturday, March 24 at 8:30 am. Bagging and Clean-Up Saturday, March 24 following Vespers. Any questions, please contact Josh DiFlorio ( ) or John Dotsey ( ). Please note: Pascha Breads will be available for sale starting on Sunday, March 25 and continue to be on sale until all are sold. The price is $5 for Plain and $6 for Raisin. Any leftovers will be sold on a first come first serve basis during nut roll pick-up Saturday, March 31. SALES DESK: This Sunday all books and music will be on sale for 10% off. Bagging and Clean-Up Wednesday, March 28 following Pre-Sanctified Liturgy Please note: Nut Roll orders are due Mon, March 19 th. The price is $12 per roll for walnut, poppy, or apricot. Priscilla Shipley and family for this academic year. We are given the challenge to raise $3, in support of his tuition. Fellowship Hour Schedule: Parishioners are asked to help by bringing at least 48 servings of baked goods and to serve them during their assigned fellowship hour. 4 EVENTS AROUND OUR ORTHODOX COMMUNITY Volunteer Opportunity: Agia Sophia Coffee House & Bookstore is seeking parishioners to volunteer. Please see Joanne Wevodau at with any inquiries. Service Trip Support: Skye Hisiro will attend a two-week service trip to South Africa in mid-may sponsored by the Honors Program at West Chester University. She will be volunteering for 3 philanthropies involving clinics for children with HIV/AIDs and a soup kitchen in or near Johannesburg. To help support this trip, Karns Foods is offering a voucher program during the week of March 26 - April 1. They will donate 5% of your total purchase toward the trip. Just hand the voucher at checkout to the cashier. Note: Any Karns store (not just the one in Harrisburg) should accept it. If you have any problems or questions please see Carl Hisiro. Vouchers can be found at the back of the church near the candle stand. Children's Orthodox Book Signing: Sheena Hisiro will be holding three upcoming book signings for a new children s book she illustrated called "Josiah and Julia Go to Church." The book is a young child's guide to church etiquette and was written by Kelly Ramke Lardin. Our church is featured in the book as well as at least a few other familiar faces. The book signings will be held Saturday, Apr. 28, and Tuesday, May 1, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Agia Sophia Bookstore and Coffee Shop and on Sunday, April 29 at our church during Fellowship hour. 5 SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY MARCH 18, 2012 Hebrews 4:14-5:6 (Epistle) Brethren, seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. 3 Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. 4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 6 As He also says in another place: You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek ; Mark 8:34-9:1 (Gospel) At that time, when Jesus had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels. 1 And He said to them, Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power. 6 THE PROLOGUE OF OHRID: THE DAILY LIVES OF THE SAINTS AND REFLECTIONS BY ST. NIKOLAI OF ZICHA AND SOUTH CANAAN REFLECTION There are many vindictive people who think that time brought greatness to Christ, and how, in the early centuries of Christianity, the Lord was not thought of as highly as He was thought of in later times. Nothing is easier than to squelch this untruth. Here is the way St. Cyril of Jerusalem writes about the Lord Christ, "This is He Who is and He Who was, [He Is] consubstantial with the Father, [He Is] the Only-Begotten, [He Is] equally enthroned, [He Is] equal in power, [He Is] Almighty, [He Is] without beginning, [He Is] uncreated, [He Is] unchangeable, [He Is] indescribable, [He Is] invisible, [He Is] inexpressible, [He Is] incomprehensible, [He Is] immeasurable, [He Is] unfathomable, [He Is] uncircumscribed. He is the "brightness of His [Father's] Glory" (Hebrews 1:13). He is the Creator [Author] of the substance of all things created. He is the Light of Light, shining from the bosom of the Father. He is God of gods "that such is God, Our God forever and ever" (Psalm 48:15),and God of God who gives us knowledge of Himself. He is the Fountain of Life "For with you is the Fountain of our life" (Psalm 36:9), flowing from the Father's Fountain of life. He is the River of God; "There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God" (Psalm 46:4), "The river of God is full of water" (Psalm 65:9) Who comes forth from the infinity of God but is not separated from Him. He is the Treasury of the Father's good gifts and endless blessings. He is the Living Water that gives life to the world. "But whoever drinks the water I shall give you will never thirst; the water I shall give you will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (St. John 4:14). He is the uncreated light that is begotten but not separated from the First Sun. He is God the Word [Logos]; "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (St. John 1:1), Who with one word [He] brought forth all things from non-existence into being. "All things came to be through Him, and without Him nothing came to be" (St. John 1:3). This is He Who created us in the image of God and has now made Himself man in our image, but at the same time God. Even today, after sixteen centuries since this Confession of Faith was written, the Orthodox Church adheres to this same Faith, word for word and letter for letter.
