4 THE LETTER below is from Sebastian Bishop s mother. He departed this life last year. This summer his mother found this written designed card for Father Dan whom he called his friend. Sebastian was frequently a patient at Hershey Medical Center. Dear Father Dan, This card from Sebastian, your friend, I ve included in this envelope was one of his last projects he did. It took a while to find it among his belongings, but I hope it brings a smile to you and your parishioners when they read it. I thank you for your letter and story my husband and I cried good tears after reading it. Sebastian fell asleep in the Lord after fulfilling his job here with courage, strength of character, and love for God and His fellow man; none of us would be the people we are today without him. But he did not lose his battle. He brought us all closer and gave faith to some of us who had little. So he won! When babies are baptized mothers are told this child is God s child and mothers and fathers are merely caretakers until God calls us home. Sebastian was the best son a mother could hope to have. And in his nine years he gained more wisdom than most men who live 100 years. I did my best and Sebastian will be remembered for being the best son, friend and example of a Christian I know. You and all of us he met along his journey here helped him become that. So thank you for your part. I am and always will be grateful for your company and for being his friend, Father Dan. Yours in Christ, Claudia and Family. SEMINARY FOOD AND SUPPY DRIVE As in the past all contributions will be accepted through December. This has helped St. Tikhon s tremendously. 5 THE YEAR 2006 is drawing to a close. There are many worthy causes, ministries and pressing needs that require our support and attention, but the church, the parish, the diocese and the national church should be our highest priority not only at the end of the year, but always. REGULAR GIVING each week, especially by using the church offering, envelopes makes it easier and more prayerful. It should be a habit; it should be done naturally. The key is to do it each Saturday night or Sunday morning, even if you are not in church. DONATIONS FOR 2006 must be postmarked by December 31, 2006, to qualify for the 2006 tax savings. Don t delay; doing Christ s work through the work of the church is important.

6 ADVENT is a time of spiritual growth so that we might overcome the secular temptations presented to us by the secular world. That world rejected and continues to reject Christ who has come in the flesh to save this world and fill it with true life. To grow spiritually during this season and to continue to grow after it, an Orthodox Christian must realize that growth in this life is only possible through the grace of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who provides us with the power to grow spiritually, but to actualize this power we must cooperate with the grace already received in our Chrismation. The Advent season is a time of paying special attention to this necessity in our spiritual life. The means to accomplish this are given in the Church by Christ, Himself. In the gospel Mark 9:29 Jesus tells the disciples that are spiritually mature enough to cast out demons and to heal. To mature spiritually, prayer and fasting are part of the necessary means. THE NATIVITY FAST AND CONFESSION On Saturday, November 15 th, the Church began the season of Nativity Fast, the forty-day period of spiritual preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Preparing for the Lord s coming requires a change in lifestyle. The Nativity Fast helps us to get in touch with our desires for life with the Lord. To this end the Church has set a period of fasting and prayer prior to the Feast. God had promised to send a Saviour to His people thousands of years before Jesus was born on earth. Many of these promises had been revealed to prophets who then told them to the people who were waiting. The prophets told them how God wanted them to prepare for the coming of His Son. They told them that they must repent, change their style of living, make peace with one another and be obedient and faithful to God. Especially during those forty days, we should repent, rid ourselves of our bad habits and conduct and think about the ways we have strayed from the path toward God. We should examine our relationship to other people; examine our religious life. Have we been neglecting our prayer life, time for meditating, lax with our church attendance? We will try to change for the better and we will be reminded of this when we fast and pray. Fasting, prayer, meditation, the doing of virtuous deeds of charity; all help us with our repentance. Preparation for a sincere confession and the receiving of Holy Communion are an integral part of this fast. The Nativity Fast calls for everyone to discipline him or herself from self-complacency and desires and to prepare oneself to receive the gift of God. The Nativity of Christ brings joy in the coming of our salvation, of peace and of love. In preparing ourselves seriously by fasting for this experience of God, our joy will be deeper and more lasting Nativity Poinsettias and Candles Honor your loved ones or commemorate your departed ones by contributing toward the poinsettias and candles that decorate our church during the Christmas season. 8 The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary. Here with a few confessions from my beating heart: I have no clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important? I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise's wife. Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are. If this is what it means to be no longer young? It's not so bad. Next confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish and it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a crèche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away. I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, and I don't like it being shoved down my throat Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to. In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking. Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How God could let something like this Happen?" (Regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?" (She said the same thing when interviewed after 9-11) In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK. Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK. Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW." Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace. Are you laughing? Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us. Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in. My Best Regards, honestly and respectfully, Ben Stein Shared by Larry Smith ~ Thank You Larry!

11 Why You Need a Will Although many people think of will preparation as an unpleasant task, it s really an expression of love for family and friends as well as an opportunity to benefit charitable organizations that have been important in their lives. Surprisingly, 60 percent of Americans with children do not have wills. The harsh reality is this: If you die without a will, critical decisions will be made by a probate court, including the distribution of your estate and even who will become the guardian for your minor children. Things to consider in preparing a will: Determine what your estate includes Select the beneficiaries (family, friends and charitable organizations) Address special circumstances, such as a child or spouse with special needs Name an executor and an estate planning attorney Events that may trigger an update of your will: Family changes such as births, deaths, marriage or divorce A change in personal health or health care needs The sale or purchase of a major asset (such as a home) A change in tax law or moving to a state with different estate tax laws The inability of your executor to fulfill his or her responsibilities A change in your philanthropic goals Samples will language to make a charitable bequest: Unrestricted Bequest: I give and bequeath to the sum of $ (or percentage of estate). Restricted Bequest: I give and bequeath to the sum of $. This gift shall be generally known as the Fund, and it is my desire that the income shall be used for. Your will is a final expression of love for family, friends and favorite charitable organizations.
