3 PARISH NEWS AND EVENTS: SPECIAL PARISH MEETING: There will be a special parish meeting following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, June 5 th. The topic is a major capital expense: the church siding. Reports are forthcoming. Mothers Day: TODAY the Harrisburg Jr. & Sr. O Clubs will hand out flowers to all the women of the parish as a gift for Mother s Day. May God grant them many years! Three Hierarchs Adult Discussion Group: At 8:30 AM on Sunday, May 15 th & May 22 nd, Larry Smith will be making a two-part presentation on Sts. Cyril and Methodius in the social room downstairs below the church sanctuary. Part I, to be presented May 15 th, will be "Sts. Cyril and Methodius - Apostles to the Slavs"; Part II, presented May 22 nd, will be "The Cyrillic Alphabet - St. Cyril's Eponymous Legacy". All adult members of the parish are welcome to attend. St. Tikhon Seminary Scholarship: We are raising funds for a half-scholarship ($3,500.00) for Dn. Ian Shipley and his family for this academic year. BABY BOTTLE BLAST: Spring has sprung and that means it s time for the Baby Bottle Blast, which starts TODAY Mother s Day, May 8 th and runs through Father s Day, June 19 th. Last year we raised $720. Grace Vernak Baptism: Our entire parish family is invited to attend the Baptism of baby Grace on Sunday, May 15 th at 4pm. A reception will follow at the parish hall. Please sign the list in the vestibule if you plan on attending so we can prepare enough for everyone. Love The Vernak s. CTS Book Club: "Crazy John" by Dionysios A. Makris, a story about a contemporary "fool-for- Christ" in Athens. Discussion will take place on June 5 th at 3pm at the Staller residence. Calling All GRADUATES: Please send the names, schools, future plans and photos of your high school, and college graduates to the church office ASAP. We will recognize them at a date TBD in June. Fellowship Hour Schedule: Parishioners are asked to help by bringing at least 60 servings of baked goods and to serve them during their assigned fellowship hour. Camp Nazareth and Orthodox Christian Fellowship [OCF]: OCF will host the First Annual Spring College Conference 2011, titled "Overcoming the World," May 20-22, 2011 at Camp Nazareth, Mercer, PA. 5 SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY MAY 8, 2011 Acts 6:1-7 (Epistle) Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. 1 John 1:1-7 (Epistle, St. John) Brethren, that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life- 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us- 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full. 5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 6 Mark 15:43-16:8 (Gospel) At that time, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. 45 So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid. 1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they said among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled awayfor it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples-and Peter-that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you. 8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. John 19:25-27; 21:24-25 (Gospel, St. John) At that time, there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" 27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. 24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. GLORY TO THEE O LORD, GLORY TO THEE!
