MUSIC NOTES One of Bach s most well-known free organ works, the Prelude and Fugue in G Major BWV 541 pairs a spritely, virtuosic prelude with a stately fugue. The Prelude contains some very unusual organ writing. It is almost written like a concerto for a violin, with a wide ranging, virtuosic line often with a simple accompaniment. Perhaps there is a string work waiting to be discovered on which this prelude is based. The fugue, on the other hand, is far more typical of Bach s organ music. The subject is a simple one, largely made up of repeated notes. Bach weaves a complex and active fugue around this subject, and the fugue seems to work itself into an unstoppable frenzy. However, it comes to a close in a coda containing a stretto (that is, the fugue subject is being imitated in other voices very quickly) after a suspenseful diminished chord. Victoria s great parody Mass on his motet, O Quam Gloriosum, may seem like an odd choice for today, given that the motet is most appropriate for All Saint s Day. However, given that Monday is the Feast of St. Mark the Evangelist, and that there have been several other Saints commemorated in the days surrounding this Sunday, it is appropriate. Unlike most parody masses, which open each movement with the same theme from the work being parodied, Victoria uses several themes and motives from the motet in this work. One of Hassler s more well-known pieces, his Cantate Domino a 4 is an enthusiastic setting of the first three verses of Psalm 96. Hassler was a very influential German composer who spent much of his life in Nuremburg and Venice. He was among the first of many German composers to study in Venice. While there, he became friends with Giovanni Gabrieli and studied Giovanni s uncle, Andrea. He is often credited with making the Venetian style of composition known in modern-day Germany, a development which would become very important. Eventually, Italian music would wind up having a great deal of influence on German music, especially during the Baroque period. 2

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. T H E LITURGY O F T H E W O R D First Reading Acts 13:44-52 The next sabbath after Paul first spoke in the synagogue at Antioch of Pisidia, almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy; and blaspheming, they contradicted what was spoken by Paul. Then both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. Since you reject it and judge yourselves to be unworthy of eternal life, we are now turning to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, 'I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and praised the word of the Lord; and as many as had been destined for eternal life became believers. Thus the word of the Lord spread throughout the region. But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their region. So they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them, and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Psalm 145: 1-9 Arranged by James McGregor Refrain Cantor; then all repeat XtzzzzezzzzzzztzzzzzuzzzzzztzzzzzzzuzzzzzzzzizzzzzzzuzzzzzzzzUm I will ex- alt you, O God my King, XtzzzzzzzzzezzzzzzzztzzzzzzzzzzuzzzzzzzzizzzzzzzuzzzztzzzzezzzzzRzzzEzzzzzzzzz/ and bless your Name for ev- er and ev- er. 5

Every day will I bless you and praise your Name for ever and ever. Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; there is no end to his greatness. All repeat the Refrain. One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power. I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty and all your marvelous works. All repeat the Refrain. They shall speak of the might of your wondrous acts, and I will tell of your greatness. They shall publish the remembrance of your great goodness; they shall sing of your righteous deeds. All repeat the Refrain. The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is loving to everyone and his compassion is over all his works. All repeat the Refrain. Second Reading Revelation 19: 1, 4-9 After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power to our God. And the twentyfour elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne, saying, Amen. Hallelujah! And from the throne came a voice saying, Praise our God, all you his servants, and all who fear him, small and great. Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying out, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready; to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure -- for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he said to me, These are true words of God. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. Sequence Hymn 48 O day of radiant gladness Alleluia Cantor, then all repeat BzzzuvzzuvzivzzuyvzuvzzoivzzuvzzzzRv,vzzivzovzIvzzUcxc/ Al- le- lu- ia, al- le- lu- ia, al- le- lu- ia. 6

At the last supper, when Judas had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Let us pray for all who do not know God as he is revealed in Jesus Christ: that the light of the Gospel may shine in their hearts. 7

Let us pray for all the nations and peoples of the world, and for those who bear authority among them: that in all their doings they may seek both peace and justice. Let us pray for the sick and the sorrowful, the hungry and the homeless, the desolate and the oppressed: that the Father of mercies would strengthen, support, and relieve them. Let us pray for the faithful departed: that the Lord our God would grant them refreshment, light, and peace. The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; but

chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: -v`*vvvyvvvvrvv]vvvevvvvwvvvv]vvyvvvvšvvvv]vvvvyvvvv]vvvvvovvvvvvvivv]vvvvjvvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvvvyvvvvv] Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow r and might, -v`*vvhvvvvvvvvvjvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvgvvvvv]vvvvfµvvvdvvvvvvfvvvvvvvhvvvv]vvvhºvv%vgvvvvvy,vc vvvvvhvvv] heav n and earth are full of your glo- ry. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in 9

unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
