M U S I C N O T E S Today's prelude and postlude have a fascinating story. They are the work of a famous composer, yet remain relatively unknown after spending more than a century in hiding. In his short life, Felix Mendelssohn did much to elevate the art of organplaying. After Bach's death, most of his music passed into obscurity, and nearly all his organ music was unpublished and forgotten until Mendelssohn discovered and began to perform it. When Mendelssohn came to England, he brought with him the German tradition of organplaying, and his playing made an impression that is still felt today. Old English organs had no pedals, or at most a limited number, connected only to a few bass pipes, but because of Mendelssohn's influence and insistence on playing Bach, English (and therefore American) organs have several octaves of pedals, which can be played with as much facility as the manuals. These two pieces were found in a group of manuscripts, consisting largely of Mendelssohn's youthful works and free pieces not part of other collections. Toward the end of the 19th century, they were stored in the Berlin State Library, then during the second World War, they were moved to the library in Kraków, then under German control, so that they would not be burned up by Allied air raids. Af ter the War, when Kraków came into Soviet possession, the library refused to return the materials to West Germany, and it was not until the close of the 1980s that American scholar William Little was able to get access to the manuscripts and photocopy them for publication in the West. Today's prelude, the third piece in the collection, is cast as a chorale with four variations, an exploration of the colorful ways in which a simple theme can be explored. The postlude, a variant of the last movement of his Fifth Sonata (op. 65, nr. 5) juxtaposes two themes: the first, a theme of joy, leaping up an octave and a third, imitated by the pedal, and a second, singing motive, which leads into the chromatic development, and ultimately to the return of the principal theme. 2

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. T H E LITURGY O F T H E W O R D First Reading Joshua 24:1-2a,14-25 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God. But Joshua said to the people, You cannot serve the LORD; for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good. And the people said to Joshua, No, we will serve the LORD! Then Joshua said to the people, You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. He said, Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel. The people said to Joshua, "The LORD our God we will serve, and him we will obey." So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. 5

Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. Gradual Psalm 34:15-22 Setting by James McGregor (b. 1930) Refrain Cantor, then all repeat McxtccyiczIYxmcxycxzicxtytcetczRzEcz/ Taste and see that the Lord is good. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry. The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. All repeat the Refrain The righteous cry, and the LORD hears them and delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and will save those whose spirits are crushed. All repeat the Refrain Many are the troubles of the righteous, but the LORD will deliver him out of them all. He will keep safe all his bones; not one of them shall be broken. All repeat the Refrain Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished. The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, and none will be punished who trust in him. All repeat the Refrain Second Reading Ephesians 5:21-33 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as you are to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior. Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind--yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave 6

his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church. Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. Sequence Hymn 552 Alleluia Cantor, then all repeat XzzzevzrvRvEcx,czztvuvUivIUcxz,ctrcxztrczzEvzzEv/ Al- le- lu- ia, al- le- lu- ia, al- le- lu- ia. It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh is of no avail. (John 6) All repeat Alleluia Holy Gospel John 6:60-69 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, I am the bread which came down from heaven... the one who eats this bread will live forever. When many of his disciples heard this, they said, This teaching is difficult; who can accept it? But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father. Because of this many of the disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, Do you also wish to go away? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. 7

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily Father Bates Nicene Creed Inside back cover of Hymnal Prayers of the People Form IV Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Here and after each petition is sung VzzzzyvrvyvtzvRv/vvrvztvzzzYvzzz/ Lord, in your mer-cy, Hear our prayer. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them cou rage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. 8

Confession of Sin Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. T H E LITURGY O F T H E E U C H A R I S T At the end of the Eucharistic prayer all people are welcome to the High Altar. The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into 10

our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Chri st s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have give us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. BcrvzzyuvzzUv,vuyczuz8zovIUv,vzyvzuivcivxzuyvYvx,x We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, BcrvxyvzzuvyvuivxxyvxxyvxzRvc/ and we pray to you, Lord our God. Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the 11

blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. A M E N.
