2 MUSIC NOTES As a preview of Tuesday s Music at Midday recital, the prelude today is two movements from Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers Livre d orgue contenant cent pièces de tous les tons de l eglise (Organ book with 10 pieces in each of the church modes). The church modes are the tonal systems used in plainchant, and are therefore things which we hear all the time here at Grace Church, even if we don t realize it. There were 8 of them in total, although more have been added since then. The first piece opens up the set of pieces in the first tone, which is similar to what modern musicians would call the Dorian mode. The second is a recititavo movement in the sixth and seventh modes, or hypolydian and mixolydian. Nivers was highly influential in the French organ world, having published the first collection of pieces in the typical French Classical organ forms (from which these pieces are taken). He was also a noted theorist, and a supporter of the chant reform which was occurring in France at the time. He even published his own edition of the Graduale Romanum, with altered, rhythmicized chants. Nivers worked for much of his life at Saint Sulpice in Paris, in a post which would be held by Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré a few centuries later. On Tuesday, more of Nivers music will be heard, alongside some vocal music by Antoine Boesset. Henry Purcell is considered one of the greatest English composers in history. In fact, many critics and historians believe that there were no great English between Purcell s death and the beginning of Benjamin Britten s career (I disagree, but there you go)! Purcell studied with John Blow and spent much of his life working at Westminster Abbey. Aside from his sacred music, he is most famous for his works for the stage, especially his chamber opera, Dido and Aeneas. The shadow of Charles-Marie Widor, Vierne s teacher, can definitely be seen in Vierne s first symphony for organ. It is a symphony in 6 movements, employing mostly classical forms, and in which there isn t much of a hint of Vierne s later chromatic style. Given that Vierne had recently graduated from the Paris Conservatoire, and that he was serving as Deputy organist at Saint Sulpice (under Widor) and as assistant professor of organ at the Conservatoire (also under Widor), it s not small wonder why this symphony is so reminiscent of Widor s style. This final movement, perhaps Vierne s most famous work, which he referred to as his Marseillaise, is a joyful and forceful work. The famous opening theme, which incidentally somewhat resembles the Marseillaise, is played in the pedal under a typical French Toccata pattern. In terms of affect, this piece could be said to be similar to Widor s famous Toccata! 2

5 T H E LITURGY O F T H E W O R D First Reading Acts 1:1-11 In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. This, he said, is what you have heard from me; for John baptized w ith water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel? He replied, It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a cry of joy. For the LORD Most High is to be feared; he is the great King over all the earth. 5 All repeat the Refrain. He subdues the peoples under us, and the nations under our feet. He chooses our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. All repeat the Refrain. God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of the ram's horn. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. All repeat the Refrain. For God is King of all the earth; sing praises with all your skill. God reigns over the nations; God sits upon his holy throne. All repeat the Refrain.

6 The nobles of the peoples have gathered together with the people of the God o f Abraham. The rulers of the earth belong to God, and he is highly exalted. All repeat the Refrain. Second Reading Ephesians 1:15-23 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly p laces, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. 7 Jesus said to his disciples, See, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Let us pray for all who do not know God as he is revealed in Jesus Christ: that the light of the Gospel may shine in their hearts. Let us pray for all the nations and peoples of the world, and for those who bear authority among them: that in all their doings they may seek both peace and justice. Let us pray for the sick and the sorrowful, the hungry and the homeless, the desolate and the oppressed: that the Father of mercies would strengthen, support, and relieve them. Let us pray for the faithful departed: that the Lord our God would grant them refreshment, light, and peace. The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. 7

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; but chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: -v`*vvvyvvvvrvv]vvvevvvvwvvvv]vvyvvvvšvvvv]vvvvyvvvv]vvvvvovvvvvvvivv]vvvvjvvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvvvyvvvvv] Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow r and might,

The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and g lory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. 9
