2 MUSIC NOTES One of the great what-ifs in 20 th Century music, Jehan Alain was a brilliant young organist, mechanic, and composer. He wrote a number of very quirky, but very good compositions in his 10- year career as a composer, many of which were unfinished. Sadly, he died young, defending France against the Nazi invasion in World War II. An enthusiastic mechanic, Alain enjoyed riding his motorcycle and entered a motorcycle division during the war. He was killed by a group of German soldiers while on a solo scouting mission, but not before he single-handedly killed over a dozen Germans himself. Le Jardin Suspendu, one of the few pieces he actually published, is a sort of slow chaconne. The piece lacks a bass line, giving it an ethereal quality, evoking the suspended garden of its title. Not much is known about Gregorio Allegri. He was a singer in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican for much of his life and wrote many works both for instruments and for choir. However, his name is legendary for his popular setting of Psalm 51, Miserere mei, Deus, which is commonly sung at Tenebrae services during Holy Week. Among his other output is possibly the earliest string quartet ever written. His setting of the Veni Sancti Spiritus is a polyphonic work in the Palestrina style, with frequent alternations between triple and duple meter. The text is taken from the antiphon to the Magnificat appointed for Vespers on the day of Pentecost (not to be confused with the traditional Sequence Hymn appointed for Mass on the day of Pentecost). Premiered in 1950, Messiaen s Messe de la Pentecôte (Pentecost Mass) was the culmination of years of improvisations with the organ. Before the reforms enacted by the 2 nd Vatican Council in the Roman Catholic Church, it was common in France for the organist to improvise over various parts of the Low Mass. It was here that Messiaen, who was Organist-Titulaire at Holy Trinity Church in Paris for most of his life, did many of his compositional experiments. The Messe de la Pentecôte was written to accompany one of these Low Masses, and indeed was premiered during a Low Mass on the day of Pentecost, This final movement, the Sortie (which means exit ), is meant to be played after Mass. Its subtitle, Le vent de L Esprit (the wind of the spirit) prepares this aggressive, chaotic movement well. Interestingly, this mass was the first organ work Messiaen had written in about a decade; in that intervening time, he wrote his two most famous works: Turangalîla Symphonie and Quatuor pour le Fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time). 2

Amen T H E LITURGY O F T H E W O R D First Reading Acts 2: 1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 5

6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' Setting by James McGregor O LORD, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great. All repeat the refrain. 6

7 There move the ships; and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. All repeat the refrain. You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. All repeat the refrain. May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; may the LORD rejoice in all his works. May these words of mine please him; I will rejoice in the LORD. All repeat the refrain. Second Reading Romans 8: All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint hei rs with Christ--if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. 8 Philip said to Jesus, Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: -v`*vvvyvvvvrvv]vvvevvvvwvvvv]vvyvvvvšvvvv]vvvvyvvvv]vvvvvovvvvvvvivv]v vvvjvvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvvvyvvvvv] Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow r and might, -v`*vvhvvvvvvvvvjvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvgvvvvv]vvvvfµvvvdvvvvvvfvvvvvvvhvvvv]vvvhºvv%vgvvvvvy,vc vvvvvhvvv] heav n and earth are full of your glo- ry. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
