2 MUSIC NOTES The organ music heard before and after Mass is from an early collection by the great 20 th Century virtuoso Marcel Dupré. The collection was published in 1920, while he was Louis Vierne s deputy organist at Notre Dame de Paris. Vierne was absent for a few long periods for health reasons, which meant that Dupré was effectively the Organist at Notre Dame during this time. An excellent improviser (as many French organists are), Dupré caught the ears of an English businessman, who visited the tribune (organ loft) at Notre Dame many times to hear Dupré improvise. This collection of 15 pieces, which are recollections of improvisations during Vespers at Notre Dame, was dedicated to this English businessman, referred to simply as Monsieur C.J. This man was, in fact, Claude Johnson, often referred to as the hyphen in Rolls-Royce, who ran the high-end car manufacturer from 1910 until his death in The collection is split into three sections: Antiphons, Ave Maris Stella, and Magnificat. The Ave Maris Stella pieces (of which there are 4) interpret texts from the traditional Marian hymn, Ave Maris Stella, traditionally sung at Vespers of Our Lady. Both pieces heard today prominently quote the traditional chant. Hassler s motet Dixit Maria is a sprightly piece for the Annunciation (which falls on March 25, but is also a theme of today s readings). It has two major sections: the first illustrating the Angel s speech to Mary, and the second setting Mary s response. Hassler, who is credited with bringing the Venetian style of composition back to his home in modern-day Germany, also wrote a Parody Mass (or, a Mass Setting which borrows material from other music) on the motet, part of which is heard today. I thought I should briefly speak on the origins of a very well-known advent hymn, which we sing today. O Come, O come Emmanuel (Veni Emmanuel) is a plainsong hymn which sets Latin texts from the 9 th century (translated into English in our hymnal, of course). These texts are paraphrases of the 7 O Antiphons (named, simply, because they all begin with the word O ). These are simply the Magnificat antiphons sung at the Monastic Office of Vespers (before and after the Magnificat) on the 7 days before Christmas Eve (December 17-23). If you pray the Daily Office at home, try singing a verse of the hymn before and after reciting the Magnificat when you say Evening Prayer (the dates for each are in the hymnal)! 2

He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on your ancestr al house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed fr om Judah-- the king of Assyria. Vzzzzzzzzzzzzzz6zvvvcczdrvczzzYzzzzzzzzz/ People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, God is with us. When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord 5

6 commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Vzzzzzzzzzzzzzz6vvvvzzzdrvccYvxx/ People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily Father Bates Nicene Creed Hymnal, inside back cover Prayers of the People Form IV Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Here and after each petition is sung VzzzzyvrvyvtzvRv/vvrvztvzzzYvzzz/ V. Lord, in your mer-cy, R. Hear our prayer. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courag e and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. Hasten, O Father, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. 6

7 Confession of Sin Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: -v`*vvvyvvvvrvv]vvvevvvvwvvvv]vvyvvvvšvvvv]vvvvyvvvv]vvvvvovvvvvvvivv]vvvvjvvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvvvyvvvvv] Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow r and might, -v`*vvhvvvvvvvvvjvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvgvvvvv]vvvvfµvvvdvvvvvvfvvvvvvvhvvvv]vvvhºvv%vgvvvvvy,vc vvvvvhvvv] heav n and earth are full of your glo- ry. The celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many 8

9 for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the ever-blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. MtvTcYc/ A- MEN. 12 Special Note about Receiving the Blessed Sacrament All people are welcome at the Altar. If one is not baptized or for any reason does not wish to receive Communion, he or she is most welcome to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing both arms over one s chest. If you wish to discuss or receive baptism (initiation into the Christian faith), please speak to the priest. You may receive the bread directly onto your tongue or into folded hands, and then after consuming the bread, may drink the wine from the chalice. If you keep the bread in your hands, it is our custom that a chalice bearer will dip it into the wine, and then place it on your tongue. The ministers will bring the Sacrament to those who tell an usher that they cannot easily climb the steps. Low-gluten bread is available upon request. If one does not wish to receive either the bread or wine, be assured that Christ is fully present in both. 12
