2 MUSIC NOTES Bach s short chorale prelude on Christ lag in Todesbanden is a straightforward statement of the chorale theme with an embellished accompaniment. The Chorale tune on which it is based is a well-known Lutheran Chorale attributed to Johann Walther ( ) and is an adaptation of the traditional Latin Sequence for Easter Day, Victimae Paschali laudes. We will sing this chorale at the offertory today. Handel s monumental oratorio, The Messiah, is divided into three parts. Part the first, often referred to as the Christmas section, sets texts which anticipate Christ s birth. Part the second explores mankind s sinful nature and other Lenten themes, ending triumphantly with Christ s resurrection and the famous Hallelujah chorus. Part the third explores the prophecies of Christ s coming again, and begins with a beautiful Air for soprano, I know that my redeemer liveth. The libretto from this aria comes from the Old Testament book of Job and from Paul s first letter to the Corinthians. Although many people ignore the third part of the work (it s almost guaranteed that a large portion of the audience will leave after the Hallelujah chorus in a live performance), it is full of excellent Arias and choruses, including this one. With L Orgue Mystique, Charles Tournemire set out to write organ music for the Mass for every Sunday and major Feast Day of the liturgical year. Each part of the work contains a short introduction to the Introit, a longer piece to be played at the offertory, a short piece to be played during the elevation of the Sacrament, and a longer piece to be played during communion. Each part ends with a postlude, which is where much of the compositional interest occurs. Tournemire, who was fascinated by Gregorian Chant and was an excellent improviser, wrote L Orgue Mystique as a demonstration of how to improvise during the Mass. Most of the musical material is taken from the traditional chants to the Minor Propers of the day, although other chants may be used. The final movement of the suite for Quasimodo Sunday (named for the first two words of the Introit) is a Toccata based on the chant traditionally paired with the Latin hymn, Ad regias Agni dapes (at the Lamb s high feast), which is the Office Hymn appointed for Vespers on the Second Sunday of Easter. Although an aggressive toccata throughout, it ends peacefully, with a fragment of the chant played on the flute stops of the organ. 2

5 Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. T H E LITURGY O F T H E W O R D First Reading Acts 5: 12a; 17-22; Now many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles. Then the high priest took action; he and all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), being filled with jealousy, arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the pri son doors, brought them out, and said, Go, stand in the temple and tell the people the whole message about this life. When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and went on with their teaching. When the high priest and those with him arriv ed, they called together the council and the whole body of the elders of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. But when the temple police went there, they did not find them in the prison; so they returned and reported. Then someone arrived and announced, "Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!" Then the captain went with the temple police and brought them, but without violence, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, saying, We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man's blood on us But Peter and the apostles answered, We must obey God rather than any human authority. I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea. Then I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands I saw one like the Son of Man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash across his chest. His head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined as in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining with full force. When I saw him. I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and of Hades. Now write what you have seen, what is, and what is to take place after this. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. 6

8 Holy Gospel John 20:19-31 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Vzzzzzzzzzzzzzz6zvvvcczdrvczzzYzzzzzzzzz/ People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if your retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; but chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: -v`*vvvyvvvvrvv]vvvevvvvwvvvv]vvyvvvvšvvvv]vvvvyvvvv]vvvvvovvvvvvvivv]vvvvjvvvvvvvvvhvvv vvvvvvyvvvvv] Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow r and might, -v`*vvhvvvvvvvvvjvvvvvvvvhvvvvvvvgvvvvv]vvvvfµvvvdvvvvvvfvvvvvvvhvvvv]vvvhºvv%vgvvvvvy,vc vvvvvhvvv] heav n and earth are full of your glo- ry. The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and 10

11 death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
