3 PASTOR S page First Sunday of Lent: During this time of fasting we may be tempted to go astray. Pray for the grace to follow the way that leads to life. (Matthew 4:1-11) Let us pray for those who have dedicated their lives to God in marriage, through ordination, or profession, that they may be faithful to their commitment. (Vocation View sponsored by the Serra Club) The League of St. Michael will meet on Friday, February 22nd at the Church. We will begin our evening with The Way of The Cross for Children. After Stations we will go bowling. Please bring cash to purchase food and drinks at the Bowling Alley. I will be out of the office on February 12th.Therefore, there will be no 9:00 Mass. I will offer a private Mass that day for the intention listed in the bulletin. THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION will be offered after each weekend Mass during Lent. FUN FRIDAY: Attention all children in grades k5 thru 5th grade. Please join us for Fun Friday, this Friday, February 15th, in the Family Life Center from 6:30-8:00. We will have fun, games and light snacks. PRO LIFE 3rd SATURDAY IS February 16th Please come to St. Stephen s Catholic Church for the 8 a.m. Mass and afterwards, process with us to the abortion center to pray the Rosary. Come pray for an end to abortion. ST. ALOYSIUS SCHOOL will hold a Star-A-Thon Draw Down on April 12th, 2008 in the St. Aloysius School Gym at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $ each and include dinner for two. There will only be 250 tickets sold and every ticket wins a prize. The last ticket drawn wins $ Proceeds will benefit St. Aloysius School. SPRING HILL COLLEGE BIRMINGHAM EXTENSION will offer an Adult Theology Program (graduate, undergraduate, audit) on Medical Ethics. (Rev.). Gregory T. Bittner, J.D., J.C.L. will be the instructor. The topics will include: reproductive technologies, stem cell research, genetic testing and cloning, the human genome, organ donation and transplantation, medical recourses; advance directives, health care proxies, pain management, and artificial nutrition and hydration. The classes will be held at the Diocesan Office Building from 9:00 am 4:00 pm on six Saturdays between March 1st and May 3rd. (Rev.) Gregory Bittner is Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Birmingham. He has served on Ethics Committees and Advisory Boards for various hospitals. He has attended numerous seminars in Bioethics and has completed certification in health care ethics from the National Catholic Bioethics Center. 4 Lenten offerings in our diocese ST. PATRICK OFFERS LENTEN HEALING MASS: Come and celebrate Holy Mass, receive the Lord s Body and Blood in Holy Communion, and the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick for healing of mind, body, and spirit. The healing Mass will begin at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 21 st. LENTEN STATIONS OF THE CROSS: On the Friday s of Lent at 6:00 pm and on Good Friday at 3:00 pm, the stations will be prayed here at St. Patrick using a different spiritual approach each week. On Friday, February 8 th we will pray the Traditional Way of the Cross ; February 15 th we will pray The Virgin Mary s Way of the Cross ; February 22 nd we will pray The Way of the Cross for Children ; February 29 th we will pray Everyone s Way of the Cross ; March 7 th we will pray The Way of the Cross for Teens; March 14 th we will pray The Way of the Cross with Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha ; March 21 st (at 3:00 pm) we will pray The Good Friday Way of the Cross. THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO CONFESSION at St. Patrick Church will be available after each Mass during Lent. ST. PATRICK LENTEN DAY OF SERVICE will be Saturday, March 8 th. By volunteering your talent, time and commitment you will be taking an active part in helping our Parish grow. Everyone, new and long standing, young and able bodied mature parishioners, will find this annual day of working together to spruce up the buildings and grounds rewarding as we serve the Lord through service and fellowship. We look forward to seeing all who have helped with this ministry in the past as well as to some new faces. This is a great way to get to k now your fellow parishioners, help your parish and have fun all in the same day. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex. For those unfamiliar with this day of service, we start at 7:45 am with coffee and donuts and an opening prayer. Participants are grouped into teams and the work begins at 8:15 am. Water will be available throughout the day and lunch will be furnished. We finish the day by participating at the 4:00pm Vigil Mass. Please sign-up and come enjoy the fellowship and stewardship. PLENARY INDULGENCE will be granted by the Holy Father to anyone who visits a Church/Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes between February 2 nd - 11 th, under the usual conditions (See the issue of the One Voice 2/1/08 for details) in honor of the 150 th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady at Lourdes, France. In order to accommodate anyone wishing to avail themselves of the Plenary Indulgence, Our Lady of Lourdes Church will be open to the public at the following times from February 2 nd 11 th : February 9 th, 3:00 pm 6:30 pm. (mass at 5:00 pm); Sunday, February 10 th, 7:00 am 12:00 Noon (Masses at 8:00 am and 10:45 am). In addition, a Healing Mass (to mark the World day of the Sick) will be celebrated on the feast day, February 11 th at 11:00 am. In the absence of Bishop Baker who will be out of town, Bishop Foley has kindly agreed to be chief celebrant. Our Lady of Lourdes is located at 980 Huffman Road / Roebuck Parkway. ST. FRANCIS XAVIER will have a Wednesday Lenten Series beginning Wednesday February 3 rd and continuing each Wednesday through March 12 th. Soup and Sandwiches will be served at 6:00 pm and the presentations will begin at 6:30 pm. Mass will begin in the chapel at 5:30pm for those who wish to attend Mass prior to the presentation. Speakers are; February 13, (Rev) Frank Muscolino, The Mystics and the Prayer of the Heart ; February 20, Dale Wisely, PhD, Keeping Our Kids Catholic ; February 27, (Rev.) Gray Bean, Lectio Divina (Praying with Scripture) ; March 5, (Rev.) Greg Bittner, Ethical Questions Regarding Life and Death; March 12, (Rev.) Vernon Hughley, Recognizing and Using Your Gifts. The Lenten meal and presentation is open to everyone. St. Francis is located off Montclair Road, near Trinity Medical Center, in eastern Birmingham. For additional information call the church at ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON ST. HENRY CATHOLIC CHURCHES will have a Lenten Mission led by Father Dan Conlin from the Diocese of Minneapolis / St. Paul, Minnesota. The Mission will begin with the celebration of the Mass on the First Sunday of Lent and continue for three evenings, February 11 th 13 th, beginning at 7:00 pm. Confessions will be heard on Tuesday Night beginning at 8:00 pm. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is located at 334 Main Street, Gardendale.
