3 MUSIC MATTERS CHOIR NOTES: Next Choir practice will be 8:30 am on Sunday, January 16 th with Mass following at 10:00 am. HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING? BB # 449 In moments of silent preparation before Mass, have you ever picked up our Breaking Break Worship Book and read some of the Hymns as Prayers? The refrain of this classic Shaker Hymn ends with Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing? As Parish faithful, we are required to respond to the Mass in Full, Conscious and Active Participation. Basically pray together, worship together and SING.Together is bringing changes to the text of the Mass, the music we sing and great effort will be made to enhance the unity of music of the Parish. If you are musically gifted with voice or other instrument, please consider sharing your time and talent with the Choir or possibly our worship band, Absolute Presence. Now is the best time to join since we begin preparing for the new sung Mass texts very soon and begin our Lenten and Easter line ups as well. Please prayerfully consider your musical gifts and direct any questions about this ministry to Janet Rubino, Director of Liturgical Music. How CAN you keep from singing? BAPTISM OF THE LORD: (National Vocations Awareness Week) At His baptism Jesus is supported by the presence of the Spirit and of His Father. We, too, are affirmed in our baptism and called to holiness. Are you being called to live your baptismal commitment as a priest or religious? (Matthew 3: 13-17) Let us pray for all baptized Christians that the grace of our baptism may guide us in our vocation. (Vocation View is sponsored by the Serra Club.) FIGHTING IRISH BASKETBALL: It was a rough beginning to the second game of the season January 2 as newcomer St. Paul held the St. Patrick Fighting Irish scoreless in the first quarter. A combination of less-than-perfect shots, perfect shots that wouldn't drop through the net, and a less than 50% average from the free-throw line added to the night's frustration and a St. Paul victory of On a positive note, Mark McPherson scored a season-high 11 points, and Ollie Anwah had 10. Rounding out the scoring was Adam Higginbotham and Jeremee Ward with two points each, and Taylor Eatman with one. SUPPORT OUR TEAMS!! Please show your support to our two St. Patrick basketball teams by attending their games and cheering them on. The next two games for the St. Patrick Fighting Irish (Boys) are Thursday, January 13 (7:45 Home vs. St. Elias) and Sunday, January 16 (6:45 OLV vs. OLV). 5 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord - January 9, 2011 My Beloved Son Isaiah 42:1 4, 6 7 Psalm 29:1 2, 3 4, 3, 9 10 Acts 10:34 38 Matthew 3:13 17 SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Isaiah s images of what the Lord does for his servant are commanding: I, the Lord, have called you... /I have grasped you... / I formed you, and set you as... /a light for the nations (Isaiah 42:6). It is with God s Spirit within that God s servant can teach and bring justice to the earth, fulfill the command to be light, give sight to the blind, release prisoners, and set free those who are in darkness. It seems a fitting passage for the Church to link with Matthew s account of Jesus Baptism. John preached baptism in acknowledgement of sin. Jesus, being without sin, had no need for repentance. So why does Jesus approach John for Baptism? In Matthew, Jesus tells John to allow it to fulfill God s plan. Matthew s account invites his community to recognize Jesus obedience and readiness to submit to God and become his chosen servant. This beloved servant is God s own Son. We, the baptize members of Christ s body, are called, as disciples, to also become obedient servants of God. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased (Matthew3:17). SHARING FAITH What does it mean to be God s chosen servant? How do you imagine a servant is called to practice obedience to God? Recall a Baptism that you have witnessed. What images or prayers do you remember from the ritual? How do you think God s Spirit helps one to be a servant of God? LIVING THE LITURGY Discuss the symbols and rituals that are used for a Baptism: water, oil, candles, new white garment, Sign of the Cross, anointing, pouring or immersing, blessing. Does anyone in the group remember their Baptism? Perhaps they could tell their experience. Read the story of Peter and Cornelius, who was a Gentile, in the reading from Acts. What did Peter learn about God? How do you imagine that Peter acted differently after this experience with a Gentile, who many Jews despised? How do you think this experience influenced Peter s work in the early Church? What does it mean for you to be called by God? If you were to draw a time line of your life journey, where have you experienced that call from God? Perhaps it meant a change in your life or a move from security to uncertainty. Share your story of God s call with someone else. The Word to Go 2010 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications.
