3 Page 3 of 8 9:00 AM BAPTISM AND SOLEMN HE RITE II - Choral COORDINATING INSTRUCTION Acolytes 1 st and 2 nd Crucifer Teams, 1 st and 2 nd Servers, Thurifer and Boat Boy, Banner Bearer(s), Element Bearers Altar Guild Baptistery & Chapel open for Communion Baptistery set for Baptisms Paschal Candle in stand at high altar elements carried in procession: oil, water, wind chimes, candle, and dove are in narthex Table to hold elements set to right of stairs on the Epistle side. Deacon set up Baptism Book, check that Baptism certificates are in order, Check that there are enough candles and towels on table unscrew top from oil stock Sub Deacon check that paschal candle is free in stand, allowing it to be removed easily MC Candles lit, including Paschal Candle Organize procession, coordinate with Verger Verger Coordinate assignments for communion and seating on Board Ensure Paschal Candle is lit at High Altar Ensure Baptism Book is marked and in place at Gospel side Prayer Desk Baptism candidates are seated on Epistle side, front to back oldest to youngest Ushers Seats reserved for Baptism families Office (IN ADVANCE!) Schedule youth to carry elements Invite those who would like to read Gospel in other languages and REHEARSE them prior to Sunday I. PROCESSION A. down main aisle B. Youth carrying elements follow choir in single file, leave elements on table at crossing and return to their seats II. ENTRANCE RITE A. Introit: Troparion of Pascha begins immediately after processional hymn B. Altar party enters as usual C. Celebrant censes altar during the processional hymn and the Introit D. Celebrant chants Easter Acclamation E. Celebrant chants Baptism Versicles & Responses
4 Page 4 of 8 F. Collect of the day: chanted - lay reader moves to lectern during collect III. LITURGY OF THE WORD A. Lessons 1. 1st Reading: Acts, by lay reader 2. Psalm: responsively, led by choir - Verger leads Sub-Deacon to lectern as usual during last verse 3. Epistle: by Sub-Deacon as usual (not chanted) B. Gospel - chanted 1. Deacon chants text of Gospel and stops. 2. The readers in different languages then commence their reading of the passage in various languages. When they have finished the Deacon chants The Gospel of the Lord. C. Sermon IV. BAPTISM A. Procession to top of chancel stairs 1. After Sermon, Deacon, Sub-Deacon and Celebrant line up in front of the Altar as usual. 2. 1st Crucifer and Torches line up on the Epistle Side in front of the Altar rail 3. Sub-Deacon, Deacon, Celebrant process to top of chancel steps; Sub- Deacon stands on the lectern side, deacon on the pulpit side, Celebrant in the middle 4. 1st Crucifer and Torches follow and line up behind the Altar party at the top of the stairs. B. Presentation & Examination of Candidates 1. Deacon holds baptism book for celebrant 2. Candidates / families present candidates individually front to back; oldest to youngest 3. Adults will be asked the additional question Do you desire to be baptized? Subsequent candidates / families need to wait for the answer before they present. C. Baptismal Covenant D. Prayers for the Candidates / Procession to Baptistery: 1. the celebrant gives the invitation to prayer, 2. Deacon will begin to chant prayers 3. Deacon will move back on the pulpit side, celebrant and Sub-Deacon will move back on the lectern side and allow 1st cross and torches to pass through. 4. Cross & torches will lead procession to Baptistery and take position in front of side door

Sub-Deacon, Deacon, Celebrant follows Crosses to Baptistery; celebrant takes place behind font, Sub-Deacon to his right holding baptism book, Deacon to his left, by table with baptism items. 6. Baptism candidates & sponsors follow celebrant to Baptistery and line up facing font 7. Celebrant invites children to come up and see the baptism E. The Baptisms and Anointing 1. Thanksgiving over the water: Chanted by Celebrant 2. Deacon holds book 3. On completion of the canon, Deacon places the liturgy book on credence table, goes to baptismal credence, unscrews top of the Sacred Chrism stock for Celebrant s use in anointing. 4. As Celebrant Baptizes child, Deacon hands towel to Celebrant, lights Baptismal Candle from Paschal Candle handing it to the parents, hands parent the Baptismal Certificate. F. Prayer after Baptism 1. After last baptism, celebrant leads in prayer, then directs children back to their families 2. On completion of prayer, choir starts hymn, 1st cross & torches lead back to chancel, and continue to the altar rail to put up their items 3. Celebrant takes Asperges, follows Sub-Deacon, Deacon back to top of Chancel stairs and all face congregation 4. Celebrant takes Asperges and goes down aisles asperging whole congregation, and returns to top center of chancel stairs, handing bucket to Sub-Deacon 5. Families return to their assigned pews following the celebrant, except baptized adult, and sponsor/parent with baptized child line up in crossing facing congregation G. Welcome & Presentation of the Newly Baptized 1. Celebrant leads in welcoming prayer, processes baptized down main aisle 2. Sub-Deacon returns Asperges bucket to Baptistery and returns 3. Sacred Ministers line up on top step of Chancel. 4. Celebrant returns children to parents, parents take seats, and takes place at top of steps. H. Peace: by celebrant - After exchanging peace, Deacon, Sub-Deacon process back to Sanctuary, replace Paschal Candle and take seats I. Announcements V. HOLY COMMUNION A. Offertory
