Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturday from 3:15-3:45 p.m. or anytime by appointment. Sacrament of the Sick: This sacrament is available to anyone who is ill. 2 HOLY CROSS CHURCH Dear Parishioners, I hope you are enjoying these last festive days of Carnival, or what many commonly refer to generally in this country as Mardi Gras. Technically, Mardi Gras in French is Fat Tuesday. Traditionally it was the day to use up all the fats in the kitchen, such as lard and butter, before heading into the Great Lenten Fast from rich foods. Back home in South Bend, Indiana it is a Polish custom to make paczki (Polish donuts) filled with various jams as a sweet treat before Lent begins. Have some fun today, tomorrow and Tuesday before changing pace this coming Wednesday. It has been a few generations since Lent was so strict, but there are still the following expectations as a Church we should strive to follow. All adults from fast on Ash Wednesday (March 6 th ) and Good Friday (April 19 th ). Fasting is described as limiting oneself to one full meal that is meatless, and two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, but should not equal another full meal. Everyone 14 years and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday, out of reverence for Jesus flesh offered on the Cross for our salvation. Anyone who is ill or pregnant should take the sustenance they need to get better and maintain a healthy pregnancy. All members of the Church should heed the directives in the Gospel of Matthew read on Ash Wednesday setting the tone for all the days of Lent in preparation for the glorious Easter Season. Throughout the upcoming 40 days of Lent and the sacred Pascal Triduum, we should challenge ourselves to be more giving of our time, talents and treasure (almsgiving), make time for personal and communal prayer (prayer), and fast from anything that holds us back from strengthening our relationship with God (fasting). Children are often taught to pick one thing to challenge themselves to fast from: candy, TV, or video games. Parents hopefully introduce praying together before meals or before bedtime if this not already a family custom. Families choose something to do for the good of others such as volunteering together or using the parish almsgiving box. Whatever individuals, families, or couples choose to refrain from or add into the daily routine, hopefully all of these Lenten disciplines are a freely given sacrifice or addition done in love for the God who first loved us through the sacrifice of his Beloved Son, Jesus. Ash Wednesday, March 6 th is also the last day to register for the Diocesan Women and Men s Conference to be held next Saturday, March 9 th at Stonehill College. This would be a great way to add some prayerful reflection and participation into your life as Lent begins. Stations of the Cross begin this Friday, March 8 th in church at 7pm. The opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and some prayer time with Jesus in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Saturday morning in Lent begins this Saturday in church from 10:30-11:30am. Next weekend we will again welcome the Daughters of St. Paul to the parish with printed and digital resources to enrich our Lenten, Easter or Sacramental (1 st Communion, Confirmation or Wedding) prayer life. Please also take home a Lenten prayer booklet from the Word Among Us and a white alms giving box. Consider making a donation to My Brother s Keeper for their Blanket Drive through the month of March. Our first of two Lenten Parish Fish Bakes will be a week from Friday, March 15 th from 5-7pm in the great room. God Bless, Fr. Brad Jesus said to him in reply, It also, says, you shall not put the Lord, Your God, to the test. (Luke 4:12) How can I help others without demanding anything for myself? CALLING NEW GOD SQUAD MEMBERS!!! The God Squad is looking for people to join us. We are made up of families, single people, teens and really anyone who can help to clean our church. Our duties include vacuuming, dusting and changing the holy water among other things. Right now our 6 teams clean once every 6 weeks ie one team per week. We could extend this to once every 8 or 10 weeks with more people. Many hands make light work. Please consider helping us keep our church beautiful! households have thus far sponsored 175 days to cover our $112 per day utility costs. We have thus far raised $19,621 toward our goal of $ to cover this year s bills. Saturday, March 16 Parent Drop Off Night 5-9 p.m. Movie Night/Parent Drop Off teams up with Eagle Scout Fundraiser to benefit Holy Cross! Please support Anthony Calisi s Eagle Scout Project. Parent drop off! Movies/Games/ pizza/popcorn night for the kids. $15/child paid in advance, or $20/child at the door. Anthony will be selling tickets after the 4:00 mass on Saturday and after the 8:30 mass on Sunday. My Brother s Keeper Blanket Drive In 2018, My Brother s Keeper delivered 1,556 mattress sets to local families in need. Each delivery included a new blanket. During these cold winter nights you can Give a hug, provide a blanket by supporting the My Brother s Keeper Blanket Drive. To make a contribution, donor cards and mailing envelopes are available at the exits to the Church. Thank you. 3 Lenten Stations of the Cross are celebrated every Friday evening of Lent at 7 p.m. in the church. Enhance your observance of Lent by participating in this commemoration of the passion and death of the Lord. Our Lenten Fish Bakes will precede Stations at 5-7 p.m. on March 15 & March 29 On Friday, April 12, there will be a Simple Soup Supper at 5:30 p.m. followed by Living Stations of the Cross by parish Youth. The Daughters of St. Paul, who have the Pauline Publishing House in Jamaica Plain & Pauline Book Center on Route 1 in Dedham, will be here at our parish after the Masses on March 9th and 10th. These Media Sisters bring a great selection of materials which they publish and produce. 4 MARCH 3, 2019 The Spiritual Book Club will meet Monday, March 4, 7:15 to 8:30 in the Parish Center to discuss Living the Gospel without Compromise by Catherine Doherty with Fran Long leading. Several copies of the book are available for $10 in the Parish Center library. Anyone interested is invited to join us. It reveals God's plan for our worship of him and his relationship with us. Some of the topics we will discuss are: Keeping time with God; A Kingdom of Priests; Sacrificial Love; Immersed in His Grace. Come. Everyone is welcome. Spotlight Request The Social Action Commission is excited to announce the addition of We Do Care to the ministry. We Do Care is an organization that assists young widows and widowers by providing peer support, care packages, and activities for their families. Easton Knights of Columbus Announce Scholarship Richard Bear Mathers/Easton K of C Council 238 The Easton Knights of Columbus is seeking applications from graduating high school seniors for our annual scholarships. Each scholarship shall be awarded to an applicant accepted and enrolled in any degree-awarding accredited college, junior college or preparatory school for the 2019/2020 academic year. The scholarship winner shall be chosen by a committee consisting of Knights of Columbus members and Mathers family members who shall consider the life experience of all applicants including an individual s academic performance; participation in extracurricular activities; and most importantly, exhibition of a commitment to share with and give of self to others. Interested individuals (particularly those individuals related to past or present Knights of Columbus members) are encourage to apply by letter to: Knights of Columbus, c/o Attorney Dennis Nolan, PO Box 397, North Easton, Ma , on or before April 30, Right now they are in urgent need of gas cards and grocery gift cards for two young widows, one who is driving for Lyft to make ends meet. They are also in need of the following for their Gifts of Love Care Packages that are distributed in the month of February: aromatherapy oils and diffusers, fleece blankets, fuzzy socks, heatable stuffeds animals (at TJ Maxx), art supplies, and Legos. 5 THE EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Paths to Prayer for Lent St. Mary s Parish Center 1 Power Street, Norton Please join us on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 from 9:4511:45am or Thursday, March 14th from 7-9pm for a special Lenten program entitled Paths to Prayer for Lent. The program is being presented by Sr. Mary Sweeney, SC. Sister Mary comes to us with a wealth of experience in the area of college Campus Ministry, the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, spiritual direction, and has authored several publications. We are very excited to have Sr. Mary with us to share her spiritual insights at this prayerful time of year. To register for this event, please contact the Parish Office at or secretary@stmarysnorton.com. While there is no charge for this event, free will offerings will be accepted. Saturday, March 16 Holy Cross sponsors a meal at the Mainspring Shelter on the third Saturday of every month. Please sign up on the Mainspring Board in the church vestibule to deliver prepared food to the church kitchen between 1:00 and 2:55 PM or serve at Mainspring from 2:45 to 6:15 PM. Meal Suggestions: cooked chicken or ham slices or pieces, pasta dishes w/ meat & sauce, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, stuffing & cranberry sauce, cooked vegetables, tossed salad, extra pasta sauce or gravy, deserts and fresh fruit or fruit salad. Your time and dishes are greatly appreciated!
