2 Page 2 DEAN S MESSAGE Exchange Bibs for Aprons Like many people today, there will always be people who church hop. They will keep shopping until they find a church that gives them exactly what they want. We don t often admit, but some people are a detriment to the mission and purpose of the Gospel and the true mission of the Church. It is impossible for any church, especially our Saint Sophia Cathedral ministry and for that matter the Orthodox Church nation-wide to move forward if the highest principle it has is to keep everyone happy. Researchers tell us that nationally every Christianity is on the decline in America. Over 53,000 people leave the major Christian denominations weekly never to return. Among those who remain, only about 20% are really committed to their faith. This is true for our Orthodox Church as well. Why is that? Is it that there are many casual worshippers who come a few times a year out of mere tradition and not because they really believe that Christ is the savior of the world? Is that why there are so few who are willing to serve Him through the Church? Christ said, For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) wearing bibs rather than aprons. So what will it be my beloved brothers and sisters? Will we toss out the bibs and start wearing aprons? In Christ our Lord V. Rev. Fr. John S. Bakas, Dean One of the phrases that has come to my attention is We want our congregation to wear aprons not bibs. Here s what this means: bibs are for people who only want to be fed. Bibs are for those who are net yet ready or willing to feed themselves. Bibs are for those who are more interested in being served than in serving. Bibs are for those who insist that the Church exists for them and their needs, whether they be social, cultural, athletic or ethnic. Bibs are for babes in the faith, those who haven t caught God s vision for the Church, who want to have nostalgic satisfaction from liturgical services that remind them of the good ol days or become historical reenactments of past Byzantine religious glories. On the other hand, aprons are for those who have a heart to serve others as Christ did. Aprons are for those who know that they are the Church. Aprons are for those who don t mind getting their hands dirty. Aprons are for those who take time daily to feed their spiritual hungers, who are disciplined and come to the Divine Liturgy on time and not just on Sunday. Those who pray daily and humbly take Holy Communion. Aprons are for those who are growing in faith through study of the Scriptures and holy readings and reflection, who are generous in their giving and stewardship. Aprons are for those who truly desire to help others grow in faith as well. I suspect that there are some of us Orthodox Christians who have grown all too comfortable in our Faith. Even some who have been around the Church for many years and are still

3 Page 3 PARISH COUNCIL MESSAGE We All Are Christ s Body I am pleased to announce that the Parish will be celebrating Father John s twenty years of service to our beloved Los Angeles Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Community on Saturday, October 31st in the Hanks-Wilson Cultural Center and in the Maniatakos Fellowship Hall. Plans are already underway for a beautiful evening to thank Father Bakas for his spiritual and administrative guidance and in exemplifying the unity of the faith and the communion of the Holy Spirit. You will definitely want to be at this historical and meaningful occasion to lend your support and thanks for the careful care that Father has been there for all of us! In celebrating the past twenty years and looking ahead for years to come, our Parish Council and our Priests work together for God s glory. As the spiritual leader of the Parish, our Priests shepherd the Parish entrusted to his care, directing its orderly life, preserving its unity, and keeping it faithful to its divine purpose of proclaiming the Gospel of Christ. He and the members of the Parish Council are together responsible for the administration of the Parish. When Clergy and laity work together for the communion of the Holy Spirit (described in the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, their working together is a liturgy, from the Greek words meaning: people and work/task. According to Orthodox Theology and Canon Law, a priest cannot celebrate the Divine Liturgy without the laity. Indeed, the very gift of his priesthood exists not for himself, but for the sake of the laity. Likewise, the laity cannot celebrate a Divine Liturgy without a canonically ordained Priest. There is a synergy a cooperation of clergy and laity which is expressed liturgically which must also govern every aspect of the Parish s life, including administration. All persons have their own personality, gifts, and talents which they are urged to contribute like instruments in a symphony orchestra, all playing harmoniously and thus making a beautiful melody unto the Lord. This will only happen when we ask the question: What is in the best interest of the Parish and the spiritual growth of its Parishioners? The financial and administrative issues of the Parish should never be separated from the life and mission of the Church. For the Parish Council to demonstrate leadership and be effective, both Parish Council members and the Priest must be supportive of each other s ministries. The Priest is trained in Theology which includes the study of Dogmatics, Scripture, Church History, Canon Law, Liturgy, and Pastoral Care, as well as Parish Administration. By virtue of his ordination and canonical assignment by the Metropolitan, he heads and administers the Parish and is entrusted with the spiritual care of his parishioners. Parish Council members are elected to assist the Priest in serving and ministering to God s People. They bring a wealth of knowledge, gifts, and talents that the priest should utilize for the purpose and mission of the Church. Saint Paul, speaking about the ministry of both clergy and laity, says: All of you, then, are Christ s Body, and each one of you is a part of it. In the Church, then, God has appointed first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. When love and mutual respect between the Priest and the members of the Parish Council show unreservedly, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. The laity must look to their Priest for leadership and spiritual direction, and the Priest in turn must value the experience and leadership of the laity in areas where they are knowledgeable. Our Parish Council Members and our Priests practice and support these thoughts and important practices. Thank you, Father John and Father Allan for helping all of us to become acquainted with the apostolic teaching, theology, history, and Tradition of the Church, and through both their leadership and guidance our depth of spiritual commitment increases, and our understanding of Christian leadership and stewardship is rewarded with new insight. Basic decisions are then made based upon a common love and understanding of the Church and Her mission in which both the Priest and the Parish Council share. Upcoming events: June General Assembly. (Information was obtained from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America). Brent A. Noyes, Parish Council President

4 Page 4 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Summer is here and everyone is starting to plan for some family time and vacations. Philoptochos is always here to help if anyone needs us, even during summer. Meetings will start up under the new Board of Directors in September and I certainly hope you will make an effort to attend and join in our philanthropic work. On a personal note, thank you for letting me serve as your President for the last four years. It has been an amazing experience that I truly enjoyed. My deepest thanks to my Officers and Board who worked with me these past years and to all of you who supported our Philoptohos projects. I think we started some very new and worthwhile projects that Philoptochos will continue with. My life has truly been enriched from these years of work and the joy that comes from working to help others. When you are focusing on others and not on yourself you realize what is really important. God sends Philoptochos out to help those who need his care and that s what we are called upon to do. There are no unimportant cases. Whatever comes our way has been sent to us by God and we know that we must answer the call. Philoptohos is the right arm of the church and supports the church and it s ministries as well. Many nights I have kept my husband and family awake while typing up notes on the computer, walking up and down in the bedroom thinking of ideas and projects and had many busy days of meetings, conferences and conventions. So to my husband, my children and my parents who have been so encouraging and understanding, especially when I thought I was going crazy, thank you very much for everything. Thank you so much to everyone. The Mission Statement of Philoptochos To aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the church through fund raising efforts this is what we do and this is why we put on fundraisers throughout the years. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me John 12:8 With love in Christ s service, Virginia Noyes and the Philoptochos Board of Directors

14 Page 14 All saints icon - a great cloud of witnesses By John Kopatsis Every day in the Church year has a Saint day, but the Sunday of All Saints (Greek: Αγίων Πάντων) is when the Church honors all Saints, known and unknown. This is similar to the American holidays of Veterans Day and Presidents Day, when a group of people are honored on a specific day. While we have information about many saints, and we honor them on specific days, there are many unknown or unsung Saints, who may have been forgotten, or never been honored specifically. On All Saints Sunday, we celebrate these holy men and women, and ask for their prayers and intercessions. The current feast of All Saints came to prominence in the 9thcentury, under the patronage of Byzantine ruler Leo the Wise, so the icons for this feast developed from then onwards, and do not vary much. There are full of portrayals from verses of the Old and New Testament. The setting of the icon is Paradise, identifiable by the abundance of trees and shrubbery. In the bottom-left of the icon is Abraham holding a righteous soul to his chest, which also identifies the place as Paradise: the Bosom of Abraham is a name given to the place where the righteous dead rest until Judgement Day (Luke 16:19-31). To the right of the icon is Jacob, holding the Twelve Tribes in a cloth, whilst in the center is the penitent thief who was told by Christ on the cross that this day you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:39-43). These figures at the bottom of the icon can be seen to represent the saints of the old testament, before Christ s Resurrection. Central to the icon is the great cloud of witnesses described by Saint Paul in his letter to the Hebrews (12:1-12:2). Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnare us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking into Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. The Saints are gathered around Christ, Who is seated in glory on a rainbow. Beneath Him is the Throne of Preparation, before which Adam and Eve prostrate themselves, whilst the Cross is also present. These are all images present in the Last Judgment. The Saints themselves are gathered into ranks according to their type : martyrs with martyrs, ascetics with ascetics, holy fathers with holy fathers, Apostles with Apostles and so on. Some of the Saints are usually recognizable, but the number of Saints present is beyond counting, as was written by the Apostle John in the book of Revelation (7:9-11). After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who Detail from All Saints Icon sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God. The four living creatures can be seen in the icon, along with the various kinds of angels. The resemblance between the iconography of All Saints and the vision from Revelation is another clear reference to the Last Judgment. The Christian cannot escape such constant reminders of the need for repentance, even in triumphal icons like All Saints. In the top corners of the icon are images of King David the Psalmist, and King Solomon. King David writes But to me, exceedingly honorable are Thy friends, O Lord (Ps. 138:16), poetically describing one reason for honoring them with a feast-day. The writings of King Solomon are used for two of the readings for the feast of All Saints. Of the Saints, the wise king says: But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble; and the righteous live forever, and their reward is with the Lord; the Most High takes care of them. Any of these verses could describe the scene observed by the two prophet-kings in the icon. Surrounding the multitude of Saints is a mandorla of light. This shows the communion of Saints: communion with each other and with God. The holy fathers describe how the Saints in heaven can hear our prayers through the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit envelops the Saints and allows them through grace to share the percipience of God in hearing the multitude of our feeble prayers. The cloud of light surrounding the angels, saints, and Christ not only show the unity of the saints with God, but the true depth of communion and shared conscience: real Theosis. The circular mandorla of light surrounding the ranks of saints and angels around the throne of God is a perfect shape and does not look unfinished, yet the potential is there for the circle to grow larger: to encompass yet more souls and bring them into the Heavenly realm. The icon reminds us of the Last Judgment in many of the details, yet this great shining cloud also reminds us that there is still room there for us.
