2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK My name is Carol Holleran and I am a member of the finance committee. I am here today to present to you the diocesan required yearly update on our budget and finances. I would be remiss if I did not start the presentation recognizing the sadness and loss we feel losing Rick Wickham as our chairperson. He will have to help manage our budget from a better place. I personally had the privilege of working with Rick the entire time I have been on the Finance Committee. We have invited Ed Gleason to join our committee this year. Many of you know Ed from his many years as a Saint Kathryn parishioner and someone involved in many facets of our community. The other members are Adam Florczak and David Wilson. I can assure you that we will continue to do our best to balance our budget and be good stewards of your money. As mentioned each year, you are welcome to ask someone on the committee or Father Joe any questions regarding the budget or expenditures. We are more than happy to share the information. We would rather share than have you wonder or guess. We want to share our concerns, like the HVAC system, bad floors in the church hall, the organ situation and the meeting of our weekly budget for paying bills. We also like to share good news. A few of the items for the 50 th anniversary were paid for with donations. Some vestments were paid for and donated in Rick Wickham s memory. The altar tile was donated by 2 anonymous people. The donations were designated specifically for the 50 th anniversary, so that s what we used it for. Money from a will or contribution with a request to designate the money for a specific project or area of the church will be honored. We ended last year with a total budget of $749K and expenses of $746K. We could not have done this without your contributions. The repairs that were in the budget and some other unforeseen repairs were completed. These include replacing the deteriorating signs, the new directional signs, the dumpster enclosure, compressor work, re-lining the parking lot, and even replacing some broken toilets. The most expensive categories in the budget were salaries and taxes at $216K. Assessments, which are mandatory and paid to the diocese at $86K, and insurance at $52K. We gave over $70K to charities, which our tithing committee designates. Our new fiscal year began July 1 st. Our budget this year is $753K with the percentage by category the same as last year. Unfortunately, insurance, electricity, heat, and assessments do not go down and will present a challenge. We kept our weekly goal at $11,900 per week. Next year, we are going to have to seriously consider some additional employee positions and budget for unexpected contingencies. We have not met our weekly budget consistently, but feel we are doing okay. We appreciate all who gave a little more. It made a difference. Please consider On-Line Giving which helps us with our budget tremendously. The proceeds from the bazaar were targeted for some of our much needed projects. It was a success. More information on the bazaar will follow. We researched the HVAC issue and will be taking the appropriate actions to make necessary repairs. The floors, specifically the rugs in the hall and classrooms downstairs need replacing. We will replace with tile which is easier to clean and replace when needed. Another project is the organ and sound system. I m sure you have heard the static at Mass. We are going to take a loan from the diocese and pay it back monthly. We will pay it down as quickly as we can depending on fundraising efforts in the future. In conclusion, we want to thank you again for your contributions and appreciate your continued support. We strive to keep the expenses as reasonable as we can. Money is not an easy topic, but it is reality. We are blessed to have such a beautiful church and grounds. As mentioned earlier, please do not hesitate to ask any of us questions regarding the budget or about projects or repairs. We need you, to help us, be successful. Thank you again. 2

4 RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process is in full swing. We have several adults who are discerning a call to the Catholic Church, but know that there may be more out there who are contemplating membership in the Catholic Church. RCIA is intended for adults (18 and older) who have: 1) Never been baptized who would like to be baptized, confirmed and receive Eucharist in the Church; 2) Those baptized in another Christian tradition who want to be received into the Catholic Church; 3) Those baptized in the Catholic Church who have never received catechesis and have not been confirmed or received Holy Eucharist. A similar, adapted process is available for those between the ages of 7 and 17. Are you interested in learning more about our faith? Is life in the Catholic Church going to enrich your relationship with God? For more information about topics, class times, and the process in general, please contact Deacon Ray at LECTIO: MARK Our Lectio series continues this Thursday with sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. in the parish hall. Join us for session 9. Delve more deeply into this first gospel and renew your faith and hope, and dispel fear from the teachings in this gospel. While the videos are not available on FORMED, our class discussions are available on the parish website. RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT FUND Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be as generous as your means will allow. Thank you. 5 DECEMBER 9, 2018 JUBILEE PHOTO DIRECTORY UPDATE The photographers from LifeTouch will be with us again on January 3, 4, and 5. The schedule is now open for you to register for a time to have your photograph taken. You can access the schedule via the parish website. Those who have had the experience have already noted how efficient and helpful the photographers have been. And there is no pressure to purchase additional portraits. While they are with us to up sell, there is no requirement to do anything other than accept the free portrait and directory. Show your pride in being a member of our great community at Saint Kathryn s especially in this Jubilee publication. Imagine if every registered parishioner were included! We would have a complete picture of our parish for the sake of posterity! We are nearing the end of the photography sessions, so please sign up today! Remember everyone who is pictured in the directory receives a free portrait and commemorative book! ADVENT VESPERS We will sing Vespers each Sunday of Advent beginning on December 2 nd, at 4:00 p.m. in the church. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed beginning at 3:00 p.m. and Confessions will be heard from 3:00-3:45 p.m. each Sunday during Advent. Please join us for some quiet time with the Lord! OFFERTORY ENVELOPES The new offertory envelopes will be available beginning this weekend until December 16 th in the church. After December 16, the envelopes will be moved to the parish offices. Remember that if you haven t picked up envelopes for two consecutive years, the number will be given to someone else in the third year. Also, several parents of young children have requested children s envelopes. These envelopes will be available during the same time. Introduce your children to the idea of giving to the church. Even if it s only a penny or nickel from their piggy banks, their gift will help support the church and its programs. LECTOR WORKBOOKS If you are a lector for the weekend Masses, the new lector workbooks are available for pick up in the vestry after Mass this weekend. Tags with names are on the cover, so please make sure you take your book. MINISTRY SCHEDULE FOR CHRISTMAS There will be sign up sheets available for greeters, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers, and Masters of Ceremony for the Masses for Christmas and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God beginning next weekend. For this first weekend, please sign up for only one Mass and one ministry so others have an opportunity to serve as well during these holy days. Please remember that serving at the altar is a privilege. At the same time, don t be so humble as to say, oh, I d rather let someone else serve. I m assigned all the time. With the number of liturgical ministers we have, there shouldn t be any open spaces by the end of next weekend. FAMILY IN NEED Are you able to donate a chest freezer to a local family? If so, please contact Jaretta at to arrange pickup. Thank you! RELIGIOUS GOODS STORE NEWS The Oplatki has arrived at the store and is ready for pickup by anyone wishing to observe the tradition associated with this. Tis the season for all things Advent and we have the Magnificat Advent companion reader for December in the store along with the standard December Magnificat. Also as we recite the Jubilee prayer at the end of Mass you ll notice the reference to our parish as a mustard seed when it began. In keeping with this reference, we have many items in the store that contain a mustard seed as a symbol of what begins as something so small and grows into something unexpected. We have specifically brought in a pocket coin with a seed in it as another item to remind you of what has been created here in our parish. Please stop in and get your seed item soon! There are pendants and bracelets too. FREE FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS We have some standard 4 fluorescent light bulbs we no longer use in the church. They are free for the taking! If you would like some, please contact the parish office. REFLECTING GOD S GENEROSITY TO US Offertory: $ 7, Online Giving: $ 4, Total: $ 12,
6 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT BE A STAR More than 80 families received gifts and food for Christmas last year because of our Be a Star Program. This effort, co-sponsored with the Food Pantry at Saint John s, offers stars that list the needed gifts for children and adults as well as food items. We invite you to browse through them in the baskets at the Divine Mercy Shrine in the narthex after Mass next weekend. Please be sure to read what you or your children take and only take it if you are able to purchase the items. We are relying on you! There are differently priced items to fit your budget. You will be asked to return the items unwrapped and placed near the sanctuary trees no later than December 9 th. We can use some helpers to sort and arrange the items as they come in, especially in the final week before the distribution. Please note that there will be a second white star attached to the yellow one asking for your name and telephone number. Please complete the information on the white card and deposit it in the appropriate basket. Thank you! As a star led seekers to find Christ in their midst, so we pray that our charity will help those we share with to find Christ s care and presence in our outreach and caring. Be a Star! GALA DINNER-DANCE Get your dancing shoes out and dust off those tuxes and gowns and be ready to go! (Really business dress is perfectly acceptable!)
