1 4 Dracut Road, Hudson, NH Tel (603) Fax (603) Golden Jubilee Prayer Lord, Jesus, we praise you and thank you for the gift of fifty years as the people of Saint Kathryn Parish. What began as a mustard seed has now blossomed into a thriving community of faith rooted in your presence in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Help us to grow in fidelity to you and to your Church; to be models of reconciliation and forgiveness; of charity in the world and signs of love and hope to all. May the Gospel we proclaim be the Gospel we live, not only in this Jubilee Year but throughout the entirety of our lives. May we, your Church, with the help of Mary our Mother and the intercession of Saint Catherine of Siena become a true sacrament to the world. We ask this in your name, O Jesus, Who is our Lord and Savior, yesterday, today, and forever. Amen. 1

2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This is one of the busiest weekends for all of us at Saint Kathryn s. Celebrating our 25 th annual Penny Sale and Bazaar, we are united as one community, in fellowship, service, and love for our church. While we acknowledge that this is our biggest fundraiser of the year, the real gift to us is the opportunity for us to see one another and to catch up. With a parish as large as ours, it s easy to lose our hometown feel, so the bazaar is a great way for us to see one another, socialize, enjoy each other s company, and raise some money in the process. We owe a special word of thanks to Charlene Maniotis and Jeanette Cassidy for organizing this event again and to all of our volunteers, cooks, bakers, candy makers, penny sale donors, raffle participants, crafters, theme basket creators, advertisers and sponsors. And then there are all of those people who worked behind the scenes with set up, take down, and cleaning! We are so grateful to you for everything, but especially we are grateful for who you are! Thank you! During this weekend, we also express our thanks to those who have served our country in the military. On this Veterans Day, I don t know how we could ever say thank you enough for protecting our country and ensuring our rights. I have officiated at many military funerals in my priesthood and am always in awe of those who have served and remain proud of their service. For so many, this was not simply a blip in their lives it is a mark of pride and distinction. And so for that, we are enormously grateful for your service. During my time away last weekend, I had the opportunity to think about our parish a lot. The long drive home and back gave me some significant time to pray and to think about our community. There s no doubt that there have been challenges along these fifty years and even during my seven years as your pastor. If we were to apply these challenges to children, we d call them growing pains. I think it s pretty safe to say the same thing about us. We re not children, for sure, but change, shifts in population, different people in ministry, different ways of doing things can cause some people to leave because it s not the community they knew. At the same time, change indicates life and vision that attracts others. Recently some former parishioners from another parish I ministered in came to visit and told me that things have changed and you wouldn t recognize some of the people any more. I said, Good! That means there s new life and new energy in the community. My friends hadn t thought of it that way. Somehow they saw the change as being less than faithful to the way I had done things when I was there. At that point I reminded them that I changed things when I arrived there too. Oh yeah we did do things differently before. Change for the sake of change isn t always good, but change for the sake of a new vision, of new opportunities, of new growth this is the change that is good. Some will stay and some will go. But Saint Kathryn s will continue to thrive because of our good people who move with the times, the new population, the new way of looking at life while treasuring what we already have. That s never a bad thing. And for those who couldn t bear the change, our prayer is always that they will find peace in their new experience. With that said, please stop downstairs this weekend. You might find former parishioners enjoying our new life. You ll definitely find many new volunteers and many seasoned ones who keep Saint Kathryn s alive and well. More than anything, we ll all find Christ in every person who comes to our door. Welcome them as you would welcome Him! PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Through compassion, with hope, and in truth, we give Jesus our hearts, on fire with love for the Eucharist. We pray to be a community that is reconciling and forgiving; faithful to the Church s teachings; full of faith, hope, and love; is just and seeks justice; is alive to the needs of others; and is living out its call to proclaim the Good News, so that all peoples may come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, Yesterday Today and Forever. Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

4 RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process is in full swing. We have several adults who are discerning a call to the Catholic Church, but know that there may be more out there who are contemplating membership in the Catholic Church. RCIA is intended for adults (18 and older) who have: 1) Never been baptized who would like to be baptized, confirmed and receive Eucharist in the Church; 2) Those baptized in another Christian tradition who want to be received into the Catholic Church; 3) Those baptized in the Catholic Church who have never received catechesis and have not been confirmed or received Holy Eucharist. A similar, adapted process is available for those between the ages of 7 and 17. Are you interested in learning more about our faith? Is life in the Catholic Church going to enrich your relationship with God? For more information about topics, class times, and the process in general, please contact Deacon Ray at Classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 1. The first step is to come to a meeting. We ll happily help you through the rest. THE THIRY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ADVENT MORNING OF REFLECTION Ladies of the parish, start your Advent off with a morning of reflection hosted by the Daughters of Eve on Saturday, December 1 st from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. We will start with Mass followed by breakfast and a reflection on the Magnificat. To sign up or if you have any questions, please call Karen Wilder at The deadline to register is November 28 th. MOMS GROUP Are you a mother of young children who would like to meet other moms for social and spiritual support? Join the mothers group! We are an active group of moms who strive to promote a fun, faith-filled environment for our children. Our weekly meetings include playtime for the kids and pray-time for the moms. The mothers' group meets on Fridays from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Room 1 of the Parish Hall during the school year. During the summer, the group meets in parks and other outdoor venues. Please st.kathryn.moms@gmail.com for access to our calendar and schedule of events. Come play and pray with us! FAITH SHARING Join us for a monthly faith sharing on the Sunday Gospel on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:15-10:15 a.m. in the parish hall. Facilitated by Sister Margaret Camire, p.m., participants will have the opportunity to read the Gospel and listen with the ear of my heart. Everyone will have the opportunity to share the Word as it has moved you, and how it speaks to you today. It is not a homily or a Bible Study it is a time to share with others what God is doing with you in your prayer. The first session will take place on December 5 th, reflecting on the Gospel of the Second Sunday of Advent. OFFERTORY ENVELOPES The new offertory envelopes will be available to be picked up from December 1-16 in the church. After December 16, the envelopes will be moved to the parish offices. Remember that if you haven t picked up envelopes for two consecutive years, the number will be given to someone else in the third year. Also, several parents of young children have requested children s envelopes. These envelopes will be available during the same time. Introduce your children to the idea of giving to the church. Even if it s only a penny or nickel from their piggy banks, their gift will help support the church and its programs. DECEMBER CHAMPAGNE SUNDAY BRUNCH A champagne brunch prepared by the Military Veterans Group, Men of Saint Joseph, and other men of the parish and hosted by the leadership of Nar-Anon will take place after the morning Masses on December 16 th. Please fill out this registration tag and enclose with payment in an envelope marked brunch. You may drop this in the offertory during Mass or bring it to the parish office. Registration and payment must be received by the office no later than Wednesday, December 12 th. $5/person, $20/family (up to two adults with their minor children) Total payment enclosed: $ cash/check Attending after (circle one): 8:30 Mass/10:30 Mass 4

5 NOVEMBER 11, 2018 JUBILEE PHOTO DIRECTORY UPDATE The photographers from LifeTouch will be with us again on January 3, 4, and 5. The schedule is now open for you to register for a time to have your photograph taken. You can access the schedule via the parish website. Those who have had the experience have already noted how efficient and helpful the photographers have been. And there is no pressure to purchase additional portraits. While they are with us to up sell, there is no requirement to do anything other than accept the free portrait and directory. Show your pride in being a member of Saint Kathryn s especially in this Jubilee publication. Imagine if every registered parishioner were included! We would have a complete picture of our parish for the sake of posterity! We are nearing the end of the photography sessions, so please sign up today! Remember everyone who is pictured in the directory receives a free portrait and commemorative book! THANKSGIVING DAY MASS You ve asked and we think we ve come up with a solution! We ve had several parishioners ask if the Mass for Thanksgiving could take place at a different time. We thought about an earlier Mass, but that could end up being too early for anyone to attend and still get the turkey in the oven. Later in the day challenges the last minute details of getting the food ready, the table set, and the house in order. So, we think we have a solution! There will be two Masses for Thanksgiving. The first, big Mass with music and the formal blessing of bread will be celebrated on Wednesday evening, November 21 st, at 7:00 p.m. in the church. The second Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day with a much simpler Mass. WREATH ORDERS Saint Kathryn Boy Scout Troop 252 will be taking orders for Christmas Wreaths after the Masses on November 3 and 4 and November 10 and 11. Delivery will be the end of November. Any questions, please contact Troop Committee Chairperson Sharon Gleason at CHURCH TOURS Church buildings are interesting in that they are built to tell the story of faith. They tell the story of the larger Church and of the particular parish. Do you know our story? Did you ever wonder about the spelling of our church s name especially if we were named after Saint Catherine of Siena? Or how we were once on the corner of Lowell and Wason Roads and are now here? How about those Stations of the Cross and tomb outside? Well, these tidbits, as well as our patrimony, the signs and symbols that surround us, and the items common to every Catholic church will be discussed in the monthly tours of our church. Each month (except during Advent and Lent), we will offer a tour on a Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and tell the story of our church, the significance of religious articles you will see in our church, the story of icons, windows, and liturgical appointments. Father Joe will give the next tour for those who registered on Sunday, November 18 th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. If you did not register for this one, perhaps you ll plan to join us for any one of a number to follow in our Jubilee Year. Space for each tour is limited, so please call the office at to register. A tour geared for younger children will be offered on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 2:00-2:45 p.m. JUBILEE GALA DINNER-DANCE Get your dancing shoes out and dust off those tuxes and gowns and be ready to go! (Really business dress is perfectly acceptable!) Plan now to join us for our Jubilee Gala Dinner -Dance on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Radisson in Nashua. The members of our social committee are working diligently to ensure an evening of great food, beautiful dancing, reminiscing, dreaming, and reconnecting with parishioners. Set aside this date for Saint Kathryn Strong. Let s make this Jubilee Year something that we can talk about for years! We are engaging every aspect of our life as a parish community the liturgical, educational, social, and evangelical aspects of community life. Make your plans now to participate in a little bit of everything including the fun times with our fellow parishioners. 5
