1 Third Base From the Pastor OUTRAGE! THIRD BAPTIST PASTOR S SERMON BANNED BY FACEBOOK! OUTRAGE POLICE UNITE! (Above is correct- but truth is always found in the details read on) Rev. Maria Stinnett communicated the bad news we can t put your sermon on Facebook because your subject was deemed too offensive. I must confess my first reaction having already turned the corner on last Sunday was simply what in the world did I preach on a few days ago? I can t remember saying anything overtly political or positive comments about the Chicago Cubs. Here s the title of the infamously banned sermon: Sinning Like A Christian: Lust vs. Chastity. The phrase Sinning Like A Christian was taken from William Willimon s book on the Seven Deadly Sins. And first up a reflection on lust as compared to the virtue of chastity. I offered a solution take down Sinning Like A Christian and insert The Seven Deadly Sins as title worked like a charm! I suspect FaceBook s algorithms caught the words Sinning. Like. A Christian was derived from a place of mockery. And FaceBook was right. The title is offensive. Sin is tied to the offensiveness of the cross. An instrument used for common criminals whose goal was to inflict as much pain as possible in a public setting in order to humiliate and degrade. Fleming Rutledge recalls the PBS series on Christianity. The narrator swerved into the following truth: Christianity is the only major religion to have as its central focus the suffering and degradation of it s God Paul referred to the cross as foolishness and a stumbling block. continued on page two Third Base 1

Holy Week concludes our travels: April 14- Palm Sunday: Meeting our Destiny in Jerusalem April 17- Holy Wednesday and Seder Service, 6:00 PM in Johnson Hall April 19- Good Friday, 7:00 PM in Sanctuary April 21- Easter Celebration FaceBook communicated a deep theological truth discussions of Sin and Christian and the price paid for salvation is offensive, foolish and a stumbling block. 5 Music in Worship Our Lenten season this year will use music by the 17th century British composer, Henry Purcell, to enhance our worship. After an Ash Wednesday service featuring music by William Byrd (Miserere) and John Stainer (God So Loved The World), our first Sunday will include selections from Purcell s music for the funeral of Queen Mary, while for Good Friday (April 19) we will be graced by a return of the Perseid String Quartet, who will play various penitential pieces by Purcell. The theme for each Sunday in Lent is Visions of the Crucifixion, and you will hear a remarkably broad spectrum of music chosen to complement the Message. These selections will range from Iberian repertoire (March 24) to American Gospel arrangements (March 17). Music & Worship As ever, we will present music by female composers, including Jeanne Demessieux, Emma Lou Diemer, Florence Beatrice Price, and Josephine Poelinitz.
