Third Base From the Pastor Kehinde Whiley is the first African-American artist to paint an official US presidential portrait, selected by Barack Obama. I encourage you to review his portraits at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Whiley places real people dressed in their own clothing assuming poses adapted from historic paintings. The present subjects are adapted from Whiley s visit to Saint Louis in An example: Our own Sylvester Jacobs is a gifted photographer, author and speaker. Here s what I observed last food pantry: As patrons waited to receive Christmas Gift baskets in Johnson Hall, Sylvester would ask permission to take their photo. Most were dressed in casual clothes and were not prepared for any type of photographic session. Life was hard and brought these dear souls to the point of needing food and other assistance from our church family. Sylvester took a photo and asked, Would you like to see? I never knew I could look this good Thank you! Well, its not me It s the subject that s beautiful, Sylvester responded. A few examples: continued on page two Third Base 1
Word from the Pastor Sylvester Jacobs and Kehinde Whiley have used their gifts to remind each subject they are unique and beautiful. Third, what kind of canvass are we presenting to those who come through our doors? Third is blessed with quite a diverse household of faith. Paul reminds us, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave or free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ. The journey toward Easter will be a time of self-examination. And may we all rededicate our lives to producing portraits which communicate love over fear; grace over law. Third welcomes Sylvester and Janet Jacobs to our beloved community: Please remember Third is hosting the 2019 Churchworks Conference, a national conference for ministers of education and spiritual Formation, sponsored by Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. The 2019 conference will highlight sharing Christ s love by battling injustice, exclusion and marginalization in our communities. If you are interested in participating: Date: February 25-27, 2019 Registration online: continued on page three 2 Third Base
February worship will explore Seven Deadly Sins. Throughout the Middle Ages, laypeople were taught the Deadly Sins and Heavenly Virtues. The phrase Seven Deadly Sins have been implemented in art and movies. The most famous depiction is The Table of Wisdom (Seven Deadly Sins) by Hieronymus Bosch each rung representing consequences of sin all under the watchful eye of God. Word from the Pastor Above and below the image are written in Latin: For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end. Deuteronomy 32:28-29 Wednesday nights have continued a fruitful discussion on Paul: An Apostle. Thank you Third, for your continued good attendance and participation. I continue to be impressed with our group of youth. I have enjoyed teaching our group on Sunday mornings in January and hosting various fellowships. We have a wonderful group of youth and parents. Thank you to our Youth Committee and Youth Teachers for their continued hard work and building fellowship and connections for our teenagers. Finally, Sunday, February 17 is our annual recognition of Third s Anniversary 2019 is our 169th! Natalie Thiems, Sally Stevenson and Simon Bailey will be ordained as deacons. Committee reports from previous years ministry will be posted online. Following morning worship, we are going to bless those in our community with gifts of grace and presence. You'll receive packet, which will be delivered to church member who has assisted your journey, home-bound member or those in hospital. I trust February Sundays will grace us with ice and snow free days! Grace and Peace, Tommy Third Base 3
Word from the Pastor From Lent to Easter: VISIONS OF THE CRUCIFIXION MARCH 6 [Ash Wednesday] 6:00 PM, Memorial Chapel FIVE LENTEN MESSAGES USING ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE CROSS MARCH 10 [Visions of the Crucifixion, 1: Earliest depiction of cross in manuscript form (Syriac Rabbula Gospels, 586)] What was crucifixion? Was it unusual in the Roman Empire? Why was this form of execution chosen? MARCH 17 [Visions of the Crucifixion, 2: Stabat Mater by Rogier van der Weyden, 1460] Who were those surrounding Jesus on the cross? Are we them? MARCH 24 [Visions of the Crucifixion, 3: Cristo crucificado by Diego Velazquez, 1632] Stripped of distractions, let us focus on the cross itself. How are artistic depictions of the crucifixion intended to affect the viewer? 4 Third Base
MARCH 31 [Visions of the Crucifixion, 4: Crucifixion by Aaron Douglas (African-American artist), 1927] Take up THY cross, the Savior said. We ALL have a cross to bear. Word from the Pastor APRIL 7 [Visions of the Crucifixion, 5: Christ of St. John of the Cross by Salvador Dali, 1951] The Savior oversees our sufferings, wherever we are in the world. Sunday School and Wednesday Evenings Thank you to Natalie Thiems for facilitating Youth Sunday school in February. Edem Dzunu will continue to meet with youth on Wednesday nights at 6:00 PM. Women s Hope Chorale In Concert Sunday, February 24, 3:00 PM Sanctuary, Third Baptist Church The Women's Hope Chorale of St. Louis (WHCSTL) is an auditioned, multifaceted chorus that is committed to creative, quality vocal programming that highlights issues faced by women around the globe. WHCSTL s mission is to give the community excellent music and join with organizations that share our values of hope and optimism for women. Music in Worship for February Our worship this month will be enhanced by a broad spectrum of musical styles, from a 17 th century English motet by Orlando Gibbons, to a chorus from famed opera composer, Gioacchino Rossini, and even to a contemporary Christian songwriter, Laura Story. What they share is a reverence for charity, one of the Seven Virtues that inspire our sermons in February and March. Complementing them will be a series of English keyboard works by York Bowen, Patrick Doyle, and John Ireland, as well as selections from an avant-garde collection by Jacob Druckman titled Seven Deadly Sins. The takeaway from this array of titles, and from other works we ll present throughout February, is that music at Third is like no other church, neither Baptist nor any other denomination. And another hallmark of our worship is the deliberate inclusion of women composers which again, sadly, distinguishes us. In just one month February you will hear music from Andrea Ramsey, Rebecca Groom te Velde, Susan Naylor Callaway, as well as the previously mentioned Laura Story. During 2019 we ll be singing and playing music from a host of religious traditions, periods and countries, all united by prayerfulness, authenticity and sincerity. A prime example of this is The Galloway Mass by the contemporary British composer, Sir James Macmillan. Away from the concert hall, and writing for his local church, James wanted to conjure a distinctly Scottish atmosphere for communion, and we ll sample some of this each month as we come to the Lord s Table. Whether the choir will be wearing plaid beneath their robes is something you will have to guess at! 6 Third Base
