1 First Baptist Church Franklin, Indiana February 2019 Annual Business Meeting Our Annual Meeting will be Sunday, February 10th, after Morning Worship in the Sanctuary at Richardson Chapel, in order to approve 2019 s Budget. We will not be having a dinner following the meeting this year, as had been previously published. American Baptist Women s Ministries is starting back up! The ABWM will begin meeting again SOON. They will, however, no longer be meeting on Thursday, but another weekday, yet to be determined. Most likely, meetings will be in the Clubhouse at Otterbein, but when we have a new day of the month, the location of each meeting will be shared with you. At Otterbein, you can parking in front, and even though the signs say 15 minutes only, they ve been told that no one pays attention to that. Please call her at (317) if you have any questions or concerns, or if you plan to attend when meetings begin again. Also, please plan to bring your own lunch and drink to meetings. You also are welcome to bring your swimsuit and towel to the meeting if you wanted to go swimming afterwards! The purpose of this 1st meeting is to discuss how they can help those in Jo. Co. who have trouble feeding, clothing and housing their families. Whether you have ever attended or not, please come! They promise not to take up an offering, or ask you to be a secretary, treasurer or president lucky for you, those position are currently filled! Important Upcoming Holy Days for FBC: Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, March 6th Palm Sunday, April 14th Maundy Thursday, April 18th Good Friday, April 19th Easter Sunday, April 21st America for Christ Offering 2019 During the month of March, we will be accepting your gifts for the America for Christ Offering. This year s theme Healing Communities is based upon Galatians 6: 9-10: Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Our goal for this special offering is $1,100.

2 Pastor s Corner February 2019 When Jesus sent his disciples to prepare the towns for His coming He told them, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. (Matthew 10:16). This is good advice, whether you are talking about ministry or life in general. It is not about being paranoid but about being realistic. Jesus is talking about striking a balance between not being antagonistic and being aware of the evil in the world. A couple of weeks ago I went on a rant about being aware of scam artists. It seems like every week I hear of people being taken for their hard-earned money. There are a number of ways this comes out. There is the Authority figure, a person pretending to be a police officer, IRS agent, etc. and says that you failed to (fill in the blank) and you owe a fine. They tell you if you don t pay that, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. Others will try to get you to give them personal information over the phone and this is when they call you. A third one will be the grandchild in distress, as in, being in a foreign jail. Often the person calling will try to keep you on the phone while you go get a prepaid card to give them the number for payment. This doesn t come close to covering all the scams out there. There are several things to keep in mind. Number one is, Jesus said on a number of occasions, Don t be afraid. Don t be rushed into doing something because you fear something happening to you or to a loved one. Don t give personal information to someone who has called you. Don t do things in secret. The grandchild scam is where someone pretends to be your grandchild and says, Don t tell mom and Dad. If you need to double check on a story or a person, find the number yourself and call. This is especially true for a relative. Call the people you know and confirm. If someone needs help (usually financially), there is always time to do it later. The same is true for what I call, at the door scams. Don t open your door for people you don t know and don t let them inside. If someone needs help you can always call the police to come and help them. I have a policy that unless it is a public school student doing a fund raiser, I don t do business at the door. Remember: if it sound too good to be true, it probably is. A part of being a caring person is not only being wise in our own relationships with people but to help watch out for others as well. If you have questions about what someone is telling you, be willing to go to a trusted source for information and confirmation. With all this, keep an ear out for friends and relatives who may be taken advantage of by a scam artist. Don t be afraid to speak out. Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering During January, we accepted your gifts for the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering. We received $345 towards this special offering.
