3 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 Pastor s Corner 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Lord is near to all who call upon Him (Psalm 145:2). As Christians we celebrate that God is very near to us, in fact, so near that sometimes we take his presence for granted. By the gift of our baptism, the Lord Jesus Christ dwells in the quiet and stillness of our heart, mind and soul. Certainly then, we have attained our true stature as human beings when we have discovered and realize that God is very near to us. We have discovered our true dignity as human beings when we know with certitude that God is with us. Finally, we have attained the fullness and meaning of our life when we have understood the name of God, as pronounced in the psalm: The Lord is mercy and compassion, slow to anger and full of love (Psalm 145:8). Today I wish to welcome Msgr. Bill Hoffman, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta who is filling in for me today while I am in attendance at the annual convention of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. He is a good friend of mine, and, I know you will find him to be inspirational and a man who has a heart Poor in Spirit. He is a priest of mercy and compassion. Blessings and peace, Fr. The Hispanic Council board will meet on Sunday, October 8th, following the 5:00 pm Mass. St. Jerome - Feast Day (September 30th) Most of the saints are remembered for some outstanding virtue or devotion which they practiced, but Jerome is frequently remembered for his bad temper! It is true that he had a very bad temper and could use a vitriolic pen, but his love for God and his son Jesus Christ was extraordinarily intense; anyone who taught error was an enemy of God and truth, and Saint Jerome went after him or her with his mighty and sometimes sarcastic pen. He was above all a Scripture scholar, translating most of the Old Testament from the Hebrew. Jerome also wrote commentaries which are a great source of scriptural inspiration for us today. He was an avid student, a thorough scholar, a prodigious letter-writer and a consultant to monk, bishop, and pope. Saint Augustine said of him, What Jerome is ignorant of, no mortal has ever known. Saint Jerome is particularly important for having made a translation of the Bible which came to be called the Vulgate. It is not the most critical edition of the Bible, but its acceptance by the Church was fortunate. As a modern scholar says, No man before Jerome or among his contemporaries and very few men for many centuries afterwards were so well qualified to do the work. The Council of Trent called for a new and corrected edition of the Vulgate, and declared it the authentic text to be used in the Church. PREP Sessions Underway Our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) sessions began on August 27th! Please remember: Children and teens preparing to receive a sacrament are required to have two years of consecutive religious education prior to receiving a sacrament.
