2 The Saint Vincent Camerata was founded in 1968 by Saint Vincent College faculty in the spirit of the Florentine Camerata dei Bardi, a 16th century gathering of friends dedicated to music, poetry, art, and science. Comprised now of 25 singers from the College, Seminary, Monastery and from the communities surrounding Saint Vincent Archabbey, the Camerata has been under the direction of Fr. Stephen Concordia, O.S.B. since With him they have performed in concert and in liturgies works including the Magnificat, Cantatas 61, 140, and 147 of J.S.Bach, the Vivaldi Gloria, Handel s Messiah, the Solemn Vespers for a Confessor and the Coronation Mass of Mozart, the Lord Nelson Mass of Haydn, the Requiem Masses of Fauré and of Duruflé, Chichester Psalms of Bernstein, the Cantata: Dona Nobis Pacem by Vaughan Williams, the Te Deum of Arvo Pärt and other masterpieces of the Choral/Orchestral repertoire. Since 2008 the Camerata has enjoyed the collaboration of vocal soloists of national and international fame, including Craig Verm, baritone; Olga Perez Flora, mezzo; Lara Cottril-McGill, soprano; John Dooley, baritone, Joseph Gaines, tenor, Katy Shackleton-Williams, soprano; and others. They have performed numerous times with the Academy Chamber Orchestra and their artistic director, Warren Davidson, and with organists J.Christopher Pardini, and Chaz Bowers. They have performed in some of the major churches in Pittsburgh, Oakland, Shadyside, Mt. Lebanon, Swissvale, and Churchill as well as in Greensburg, Patton, Ligonier and at the Johnstown Concert Series. In the Spring of 2016 the Camerata joined four other university choruses for three performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Manfred Honeck in Heinz Hall, at which time they were prepared by the legendary, and beloved choral master, Robert Page ( ). In the Fall of 2015 they performed a joint concert with the Schola Franciscana of Franciscan University, in Steubenville, OH. In November of 2016 they performed a program of early baroque choruses with the internationally renowned early music ensemble, Chatham Baroque. The Camerata Scholarship Fund In 2011 a Scholarship Fund was begun at Saint Vincent College to offer financial support to musically gifted students who, during their time at the College sing with the Camerata and Camerata Scholars. In addition to its general fund, it includes the Joseph Del Sordo Memorial Scholarship, in memory of SVC Alumnus and Choral Director Joseph Del Sordo. Degree Programs in Sacred Music at Saint Vincent College The Music Department of Saint Vincent College now offers programs in Sacred Music leading to the following degrees: Music Performance Major - Concentration in Sacred Music; Music Major - Concentration in Sacred Music; Minor in Sacred Music As the first Benedictine College in the U.S. (founded in1846) Saint Vincent s Programs in Sacred Music focus on the musical traditions of the Catholic Church including Gregorian Chant, Sacred Composition, Choral singing and Direction, and Organ, studied and practiced in a Benedictine environment that accentuates Community, Stewardship, and Service. Reçois les chants qu il offre à ta gloire immortelle, Et de tes dons qu il retourne comblé Word equal to the Most High, our sole hope Eternal of both the Earth and the Heavens, On this peaceful night, we break the silence Divine Saviour, cast your gaze down on us! Spread on us the fire of your mighty grace So that all of Hell flees upon hearing your voice. Dissipate the sleep of a yearning soul Which leads us to forget your laws! Oh Christ, be favourable to this faithful people Now gathered to bless you Welcome the hymns they offer to your immortal glory And may they come back fullfilled! Let the proud be confounded, for unjustly they have oppressed me: I, however, in your commands will proctice, and in your justice, that I may not be confounded. (Psalm 118, 78.80)
