2 Welcome to St Paul s Knightsbridge, part of the Diocese of London and a church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. If you are visiting us from another church, please make yourself known to the sidesmen or to one of the clergy after the service. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to share with us in this Eucharist and those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament are invited to approach the altar at the time of Communion, to receive a blessing. There is a loop system in the lower parts of the church for the benefit of the hearingimpaired. Hearing aid users should switch their devices to T. THE PRAYER OF PREPARATION Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ, our Lord. Amen. The Deacon says: Jesus says, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. All kneel. A time of silence and recollection is kept. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against thee and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are heartily sorry and repent of all our sins. Amen. All sit. The Liturgy of the Word THE FIRST READING Daniel 7: 9-10, A reading from the book of the prophet Daniel. As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousand served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgement, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. 6

7 To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. At the end: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Look! 17 The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread, saying: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. THE GIVING OF HOLY COMMUNION By way of invitation to receive the Sacrament the Celebrant says: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed. The Sacred Ministers and Servers receive the Holy Communion, followed by the people, beginning with those seated at the front of the Nave. All who normally do so in their own Church are invited to receive the Sacrament. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion are invited to approach the altar to receive a blessing, carrying this booklet in their hands as an indication to the Priest. 21 NOTES ON THE READINGS Dan 7: 9-10, The first reading for this day is selections from Daniel's vision. In v. 9 Daniel sees the Ancient of Days (God) take his seat on a throne. God has white hair and clothing and the throne is outfitted with fire and wheels (cf. Ezekiel 1). Verse 10 talks about the numerous heavenly beings that attend him. In the omitted verses 11-12, we learn that the horn that was speaking arrogant words was put to death, thus indicating the fate of Antiochus Epiphanes. The other beasts, that is the four kingdoms outlined in vv. 3-8, are given one last gasp of life. In vv a son of man (human being) approaches God. This may be a reference to the archangel Michael, who represents Israel's interests before God. To him was given dominion, glory and kingship, and he is told that all nations will serve him. This reassures Israel that although they are now experiencing oppression and martyrdom, ultimately victory will be theirs. These verses contribute aspects to the picture of Jesus as Son of Man in the New Testament and also to depictions of the Last Judgment. Revelation 1:4b-8 John begins and ends this book as a letter. Literally, it is to the seven churches that are in Asia (v. 4a), Asia being a Roman province in western Asia Minor, but seven symbolizes totality, so John may speak to all churches in the province, or to all everywhere. The salutation combines both Greek ( grace ) and Hebrew ( peace ) forms, and is from God, here described as being throughout time, meaning eternal. The salutation is also from the seven spirits : this may mean the Spirit of God (in Isaiah 11:2, the Spirt operates in seven ways) or the seven angels (Michael, Raphael, etc) closest to God ( before his throne, v. 4) in contemporary Jewish thinking. Further, it is from Jesus Christ (v. 5), who is: the faithful witness : he revealed the Father perfectly in his earthly life, and crowned this by the sacrifice of his life; firstborn of the dead : in his resurrection, he inaugurated a new era; and ruler... : being now exalted, he has power over all creation. Vv. 5b-6 praise God: Christ loves us continually and, by his death, he has freed us from sins; and he has marked us as God s, and has made us all priests, mediators between God and the rest of humanity. Amen, a Hebrew word, means It is sure and trustworthy! or so be it!: it is both valid and binding. (In 3:14, Christ is called the Amen.) V. 7 combines two Old Testament prophetic sayings to predict the return of Christ at the end of the age. Those who put him to death and all unbelievers will wail for showing hostility to Christ and his Church: they will be condemned when Jesus comes us as judge. V. 8 tells us that, from A to Z, God is sovereign over all events of human history; his power is supreme ( Almighty ). 21

22 John 18:33-37 This is part of John s account of Jesus trial before Pilate. Pilate has met with those Jews seeking his death outside his headquarters, the praetorium. He has asked: what charge, valid in Roman law, do you have to bring against him? (v. 29). V. 30 shows that they have none to propose. Pilate refuses to get involved by telling them to try him under Jewish law. They then make it obvious that they seek Jesus death. Now Pilate goes inside the praetorium and asks Jesus: are you the leader of a revolutionary movement? In return, Jesus asks him: Is this question your idea, based on what you have heard, or did others put you up to it? Pilate shows his scorn for Jews; the religious authorities seek your death, but what grounds are there for killing you? In v. 36, Jesus begins to explain the nature of his kingship. Were he a rebel leader, his followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the religious authorities, but he is no threat to Pilate s authority. Pilate picks up on Jesus words my kingdom. Jesus is king of truth (v. 37); his subjects are those who belong to the truth. He was born and came into the world to establish the kingdom of God, the ultimate truth. NOTES ON THE MUSIC Messe Solenelle Louis Vierne ( ) Louis Vierne was a French organist and composer, nearly blind from congenital cataracts, but at an early age he was discovered to have a gift for music. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, and went on to become Widor s assistant in Saint- Sulpice (Paris) and later served as the organist at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Vierne suffered a stroke or a heart attack during his 1750 th organ recital at Notre-Dame, thus full-filling his lifelong dream to die at the console of the great organ of Notre-Dame. He was considered one of the greatest musical improvisers of his generation. He had an elegant, clean style of writing, and his harmonic language was romantically rich. Written in 1900 for organ and a four-part choir, his Messe Solenelle is one of his most performed choral works. There is a continual sense of forward momentum in the Kyrie, Gloria and Sanctus due to the propulsive rhythmic feature in the organ accompaniment. Vierne allows himself more time than other composers of his era more time for thematic development and for imaginative expression. There are slight contrasts between each section, the most noticeable being between the triumphant Sanctus followed by the mysterious harmonies of the Benedictus. The long-breathed phrases of the Agnus Dei echoing from the choir to the organ, grow into a wonderfully serene conclusion. Sedebit Dominus Rex James MacMillan (b. 1959) James MacMillan is a Scottish composer and conductor, gaining degrees from Edinburgh University, and a PhD from Durham University in His successes include producing large and innovative orchestral and operatic works, premieres in the Royal Albert Hall and works also being conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Sedebit Dominus Rex comes from the Strathclyde Motets a set of fourteen communion 22

23 motets for specific liturgical occasions, composed between 2005 and 2010 for performances by Strathclyde University Chamber Choir. The motets are composed in mind of music with great beauty and approachability. MacMillan s use of simple means in these Strathclyde Motets emphasises the atmospheres he sets up these in turn wonderfully highlight the words he is setting. In Sedebit Dominus Rex, a motet for a major Feast Day (Christ the King Psalm 28: 10b and 11b), the joy of the opening is achieved principally through the decorated soprano line heeding back to the influence of ancient Celtic music. It is the combination of ancient and modern in MacMillan s music which is part of what makes it so innovative and engaging. O Taste and see Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Studying at Charterhouse and then the Royal College of Music, Ralph Vaughan Williams became famous for his symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, film scores and for editing the English Hymnal which he started in Vaughan Williams was an agnostic, having evolved from atheism in his early life. Nevertheless, he composed a vast amount of religious music turning out works for church services, hymns, hymn harmonisations and various other compositions. The short motet O taste and see uses text from Psalm 34:8, and is scored for unaccompanied chorus with an optional organ part. Vaughan Williams captures the consoling nature of the text with dissolutely pleasant music, who s flowing, soaring vocal line is typically, richly Romantic. The text of the Psalm begins O taste and see that the Lord is good, with a lone Soprano voice, gradually adding more voices with subtle contrapuntal elements forging music of great beauty, colour and harmonic warmth. Tuba Tune Norman Cocker ( ) Norman Cocker was a Yorkshire-born organist and composer for the organ. He became a chorister at Magdalen College Oxford and was later awarded an organ scholarship at Merton College Oxford, but never completed his degree after being sent down, on his own admission, for not doing enough work. He was appointed Assistant Organist at Manchester Cathedral in 1920 and later held positions in various churches and cinemas in the city. He was also an amateur magician, and is mainly remembered today for his Tuba Tune. Composed in the early twentieth century, Cocker s Tuba Tune is a lively and majestic piece for the organ, showing off the solo Tuba stop. The piece starts with a fairly loud, bold introduction, displaying the ascending motif that is used throughout. A few bars later, the solo Tuba can be heard with this motif. This imitation between the Tuba solo and the accompaniment continues in a similar fashion throughout the piece, modulating through many different keys and eventually ending up in the same key that it started in. 23

The organ is by Henry Willis & Sons and dates from The musical repertoire, Sunday by Sunday, is diverse and often boldly ambitious: at the Solemn Mass at 11 am there is always a choral mass setting and two seasonal anthems, one at the Offertory and the other during Communion. Full details of the music for each week along with a programme note is published in the service paper. The musicians also sing and play for weddings, baptisms, funerals and memorial services at the church.
