Today we enter the season of Epiphany, which is the revelation of Jesus as God s unique son for all humanity. The season begins with the story of the magi visiting the baby Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12) and ends on Feb. 26 with story of Jesus transfigured before his disciples (Luke 9:28-36). Images of light and wonder fill the season, from the star of the magi to the brilliant white robes on Transfiguration Sunday. Jesus is the light of the world! Let us rejoice together in the light of his grace and love for us. 3 We gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Confession and Forgiveness In a world that promises to grant life from things that cannot give life, let us turn our hearts to the Triune God and humbly ask for forgiveness, eternal life and hope for the journey. God of mercy, you know our hearts. We look to things that are not life-giving to give us life. Lord, where do we go for eternal life? Where do we go to find hope and forgiveness? We repent and turn to you, for you are the light of the world. Forgive us, Lord, and set us free. Sisters and brothers, God s love is beyond measure. God s grace is for all creation. Hear these words: In the name of Jesus and because of God s great love, you are set free, forgiven and loved! Now shine with the light of the Trinity. Thanks be to God. 3

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 8 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
