The next First Friday Fish Fry will be October 5th we serve both lunch and dinner (11:00am 7:00pm). Please join your neighbors for fellowship and a delicious meal (and a nice cold beer in celebration of Oktoberfest!) The Fish Fry provides an excellent setting to get together with friends, neighbors and other parishioners to share a meal and some good conversation. If you are in a hurry, take out is available -- call ahead at and Pat will be glad to take your order and have it ready for you to pick-up. The Fish Fry season officially kicked off in September. Turnout was fairly strong. We sold over 420 dinners, which was a great start. For all you bakers please feel free to drop off any of your delicious desserts for our bake sale. The people really enjoy a sweet treat after dinner. We could also use four more volunteers to help with clean-up at the end of the evening (7:00pm 9:00pm). Please give Mary Ann Ault a call at if you are able to help out. CCD News CCD Classes have begun for the year! Is your child registered? Wednesday night parents are reminded to use only the parking lot across the street from the church and the church front doors to enter and leave the building. This is for the safety of all students. The parking places around the building are reserved for the teachers only! (If your child has special needs, please contact the CCD office.) Please do NOT use these spots for dropping off or picking up your students. If you want a parking spot at the building VOLUNTEER! We sure would love your help! Life Enrichment Club: Is football season turning you into a couch potato? Then get up and get moving and join us for Fitness Fun with Healthtrax at our next Life Enrichment Club luncheon on Wednesday, October 10th at 11:00am. Peggy Gregor, National Group Fitness Director for Healthtrax Fitness and Wellness will be demonstrating exercises using simple equipment and chair exercises you can do while cheering on the Steelers. Our Youth Groups would like to thank you for your generous donations to Rise Against Hunger which we had on Sunday, September 23rd. With your help, we were able to package and ship 10,000 meals to be sent overseas to those in need, and we are very grateful. It was wonderful to have Saint Louise and Saint Joan teens and adults work side by side for this wonderful endeavor. God Bless you all! 4 Youth Ministry News An invitation for all adults and teens in 9-12 grade: The Appalachia Work Camp is starting to plan for our trip which will take place in July, If you have ever thought about being a part of this mission trip, we are having a Registration Meeting on October 7, at 6:00pm at Saint Joan of Arc. The AWC started in 1982 by Father Dan Sweeney with 5 adults and 15 teens. We now consist of approximately 6 churches and 130 participants, which are high school teens. Our sole purpose is to live out the beatitudes of Jesus in a very real way. Service experiences are transformational for not on the ones we serve, but also for the participants. It will make you realize first-hand that it is better to give than receive. Candlelight Mass -- Join your friends and neighbors for the monthly Candlelight Mass at Saint Stanislaus Church in the Strip District. The next Mass will be on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 8:00pm with Father Richard Zelik as celebrant. Also joining will be the Heritage Choir from Saint Benedict the Moor Parish. 5 Have you ever walked to your car at the conclusion of Mass, thankful for the gift of the Eucharist, yet longing to connect in some small way with those with whom you worship? Ever find it difficult to unload/load your car before and after Mass with passengers that need assistance (young families with children, elderly with walkers or wheelchairs)? Many parishioners and visitors come to our churches in need of some support or practical help, but are uneasy asking. As a community of faith, we are called to help one another in our needs and vulnerabilities by exercising hospitality. Practicing hospitality means preparing a place for others to be at ease. It is more than a concept; it s an attitude of the heart, a way of being that defines Christian life. Hospitality is a creative force vital to our Christian condition and the act of making room for others in our heart and in our communities. It s through these acts, these personal encounters, where we experience real love. Our parish families of Saint Joan of Arc and Saint Louise de Marillac are taking some very significant steps together as part of On Mission for Church Alive! Our work is not primarily to manage the challenges of changing demographics. Our common work is to build up and strengthen our community, as we move toward forming a stronger, united parish over the next few years. To that end, we are currently forming a new and very important ministry for our parish grouping. The goal of our Hospitality Ministry is to build on the good spirit of our communities, and to create an even more welcoming and inviting environment for every person, parishioner or visitor, entering our church doors each week. We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging - no matter their circumstance. We consider every parishioner to be a part of this ministry. Your are a member in one or two ways: formally and/or informally. Formally: We are now seeking persons within our parish community to be a part of this important ministry. We invite individuals (men and women), families (two & single parent families, families with very young, or school aged children), teens to seniors, to comprise this team. The more we have as part of it, the easier it will be to spread the tasks. What will you need to do as a member of the team? Simply greet individuals as they arrive and leave Mass. If able-bodied, assist parishioners from their cars to and from the church building. Hospitality Ministry What qualifications are needed? A smile and the ability to sincerely welcome and send-off individuals who come to worship with us each week at Mass. Being a part of this ministry is a great way for families and husbands and wives to serve in the church together. This is also a wonderful way to get to know others within the parish. We especially welcome our younger parishioners and teens to be a part of this ministry (and this is a way to earn recognition for community service required for school or in preparation for Confirmation). Members can let us know how often you would like to serve with us, we know weekly commitment can be difficult. Informally: Even if you may not feel inclined to be a formal Hospitality Ministry team member, all parishioners can practice hospitality each week at Mass. The unfamiliar face sitting next to you may be someone from our sister parish who is coming to worship with us for the very first time, so please smile and say hello! Perhaps you might be surprised to find a new face or two sitting in your favorite spot. If so... smile at them and thank God that you have more people with whom to share your faith! We simply ask that all of parishioners be aware of the need for connection and belonging that we all desire. We can always greet each other with a smile. At the sign of peace look each other in the eye and remember to pray for one another. We are all carrying our crosses... seen and unseen. And don t forget goodbyes! We can send each other off with a smile and a positive word of encouragement. Formally or informally, you are part of this ministry!! Over the coming months you will see this ministry expanding. 6 Mass Readings Explained: Please join us to watch a brief video in which Dr. Brant Pitre discusses the readings of the upcoming Sunday Mass each week. Everyone is welcome to drop by Saint Louise Parish Center, any Wednesday morning if they have a half hour to spare. Come and learn about the historical, traditional and theological and practical applications of the readings each week. No registration needed and there is no charge. Come and try it out, you will learn a lot even if you can only make it to one video. Showings are in the LeGras Conference Room every Wednesday at 9:45am. Anointing Mass: On Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 12:30pm, Saint Louise de Marillac Parish (320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair) will celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick for those who are ill, elderly, or frail. Lunch will be served to each guest and escort in the LeGras Parish Center (downstairs hall) immediately following Mass. Invitations are available at the Parish Office. Lunch reservations are necessary. Do Not Prevent Him In this weekend s Gospel the Apostles are worried when they see someone who is not one of them driving out demons in Jesus name. Jesus could have responded with frustration or anger that someone was stealing his thunder. Instead, however, he welcomes this man s ministry, responding, do not prevent him. For whoever is not against us is for us. It highlights an openness to the sharing of gifts and talents to support the work of Jesus in the world and he seeks to heal, strengthen, forgive and empower others. On Mission for The Church Alive! provides an opportunity for the faithful to look for new opportunities to do good in Jesus name. While there are many things our parishes provide for our communities, there are always new ways to inspire faith and serve others. If you re already involved, welcome the good things others are seeking to do to build up the Church. If you re not involved, don t be afraid to think outside the box and be open to where God might be inviting you to be a source of light to others.
