The sign-up form is in the Rainbow Room For the week of November 3 at the home of Mary Grace McCartan Jesus Is Calling You In today s Gospel, Jesus calls for the blind man, Bartimaeus, that he might come to him and be healed. Saint Mark relates to us very vividly that Bartimaeus, threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus, and that his sight was restored because of his faith and trust in God. Of course, we see many instance in the Gospels of Jesus calling out to others. Often times he calls people to follow him, like those who would be his Apostles. At other times, like his encounter with Zacchaeus, he calls out so that he might stay with Zacchaeus and be of support in his life. In the Church, we most likely think of calling as one s vocation, listening for what purpose God has created us to know, love and serve him. Priests speak of their vocation, or calling, to holy orders and married couples talk of being called love each other with a sacrificial, unbreakable and unconditional love. And within the call of our vocation, the Lord time and again calls out to us to invite us to share our gifts and abilities in a variety of ways for the good of others and of the Church. As our On Mission for The Church Alive! journey continues forward we are all invited to listen for the Lord calling us by name and seeking new and vibrant ways to respond in faith and generosity. 4 Preschool News Mrs. Judy Mills Pumpkins and witches and bats... oh my!!! The Preschool is ready to celebrate their first holiday of the school year. Games are planned, crafts are prepared, the Witches Brew is simmering, and the trick or treaters are ready to party!! The Tiny Hearts for Two groups and the 3 yr. old groups will be celebrating Halloween at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. So check back next week for some great photos. All of the Preschool groups have been learning some very important Fire Safety rules during National Fire Safety month. Please help the young children in your life by checking your smoke detector battery and being aware of objects in your home that could be dangerous for young children to touch. Christmas Shopping made easy Preschool can help with your Christmas shopping before the mad rush!! Enjoy Books are still available at the Administration Office during business hours for only $30 each. Make plans now to attend our Christmas Craft/Vendor Fair in Frawley Hall on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00-2:00. Over 30 crafters and vendors will be there to assist you with your shopping list!! Pick up a Sarris Candy order form in the Rainbow Room after Masses the next few weekends to order your holiday sweets. More details in next week s bulletin. Thanks for your continued support!! 5 MUSIC MINISTRY Kyle Davies, Director of Music Ministry and Liturgy Handbell Ringers Needed Our Rejoice Ringers ministry is in need of two bell ringers for the season. Contact Kyle Davies if you are interested and he will communicate the rehearsal schedule as well as performance dates. Psalm Reflection Psalm 126: 12, 23, 45, 6 Psalm 126 was probably composed at the time the Israelites were freed from their captivity in Babylon. This experience left them certain of God s saving intervention in the future. The relationship of the psalm to the first reading is apparent, its relationship to the gospel is multilayered. On one level, Jesus delivers Bartimaeus from blindness. On another level, Bartimaeus cure represents our own release from blindness that blocks us from seeing our mission clearly and immobility that prevents us from moving forward in discipleship. Like Bartimaeus, we need only ask and Jesus will heal us. This healing will enable us to walk with open eyes and willing feet toward the cross. Though it may not appear to be so, this is indeed a great thing God is doing. How prepared are you to accept this kind of great thing? 6 In some of our lessons, we are talking about covenants. Different grade levels have been exploring the covenants God had with people of the Old Testament like Abraham, Moses and King David. We are discussing key events in their lives and why their stories are important for us today. These old covenants play a very important role in redemption as they show Israel how they ought to live and worship, their need for a Savior because of their sins and God revealing Himself to them and calling them His "treasured possession." Covenants focus on God's desire to relate to His people, and to ultimately live among them and in them. He does this through His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. There are no Religious Education classes this week (Monday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 31) because of Halloween. Remember that Thursday is a Holy Day of Obligation it is All Saints' Day. This is a day that revolves around giving God thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints. We celebrate saints like St. Paul the Apostle and St. Teresa of Calcutta and we celebrate people we have personally known like our grandmothers, uncles or friends. I hope you will join us for the 7pm Mass at St. Germaine's Church. For our home study students, the September/October lessons are due to the Faith Formation Office by October 31. We have completed our first Corporal Works of Mercy Service Project. We have mailed all of our college care packages. Some went over the Bluff to Duquesne University, one went as far away as the University of Notre Dame and one went even farther to UCLA. In our next program wide service project, we will be making and sending "Thinking about You" cards to members our St. Valentine parish who are homebound, in nursing homes or in the hospital. There is a new bulletin board in the main entrance to the Religious Education Office. High school students in need of community service for National Honor Society, 8th graders in need of Confirmation Service Hours or any one looking to help neighbors in need, can find service projects posted. RCIA What have we been doing in RCIA? After discussing the RCIA process, we had a session on the Blessed Trinity. Last weekend, we did a tour of St. Gabriel Church and our next tour will be of St. Valentine Church. In our last session, we discussed the Fall, Genesis 3:124, which is clearly one of the most well known and most relevant passages in Sacred Scripture. It explains how sin entered the world. How does Satin tempt Adam and Eve.? Well, he makes God's perfectly clear command blurry and gets them to doubt God's intentions, "Did God really say...?" This is what happens to us all the time. We doubt God's goodness, ignore his commands, and convince ourselves to do something that we know is wrong. "Without the knowledge Revelation gives of God, we cannot recognize sin clearly and are tempted to explain it as merely a developmental flaw, a psychological weakness, a mistake, or the necessary consequence of an inadequate social structure..." (CCC 387). We had a good discussion about which of Satin's tactics we see in our own lives and made a plan to develop a daily Examination of Conscience and to say a Act of Contrition at the end of each day something we should all do. 6
