3 Hype Create an atmosphere of anticipation in the room through your lighting, music and interaction with the hosts or worship leaders. Begin the music before the audience enters. Choose highenergy music. Opening Music Lead kids and parents in singing the following songs. You can use teen and kid singers on the stage to do motions to the songs and facilitate worship, but you can go as simple as a CD player with one of your hosts leading. You may want to introduce the motions to the audience at the beginning of the song. 4 Welcome/Intro Comic Host and Credible Host enter. Comic Host s hair is mussed, his eyes red. He s chugging something from an extra-large cup. He s jumpy. Hello, and welcome to [name of your FX]. I m [Credible Host s name], and this is What? Who, me? [Comic Host s name]! I m [Comic Host s name]! That s (spell out name) in case you want to celebrate my awesomeness by sending me gift cards, homemade cookies, or ninja weaponry. In case you re new and none of that computes, [name of your FX] is actually the place that kids bring their parents to learn Life Apps. These are values like LOVE, RESPECT, and COURAGE that God can work out inside of us to change us and the world around us! [Comic Host s name], can you reveal this month s Life App? Do I LOOK like I want to help? Not really. But you usually do anyway. [Credible Host s name], I cannot help. I have been wronged. Comic Host paces like a caged animal. Okay, but this month s Life App I haven t slept in three whole days! Maybe you can take a nap after [name of your FX]. I don t need YOU to ride in on a white horse and fix this. I already have a solution. I don t even know what the problem is. 4

5 My neighbor Bart just got these new sheepdogs! Oooh, I see. And they re keeping you awake howling. What? No. They re quiet. But you aren t sleeping. Comic Host stops in his tracks. He turns a fixed gaze on Credible Host. Yeah. Cause they re STARING at me. How do you even know that? There s a fence... not to mention the walls of your house. They re still staring. I know. Because I watch them all night. Credible Host steps closer to Credible Host, still staring. Credible Host backs away. Okay, that s creepy. See? No. What you re doing is weird. What your neighbor s sheepdogs are doing is just being dogs. So ignore it and go to sleep. I can t! The top of the fence is too pointy. Comic Host closes in, backing Credible Host into a spot he can t move out of easily. He s still staring. Credible Host makes a move and escapes. 5

6 Aaa! Just stop. (Beat.) So let me get this straight. You re spending the night in your backyard staring over the fence at your neighbor s sheepdogs staring back at YOU? SEE? I can t believe the nerve of him. It may be time for an intervention. (to audience) Thank you. Yes! (Calling off) Props, please! (To Credible Host) I ve got the perfect way to get back at Bart. Your neighbor? He hasn t done anything. Stagehand brings out two huge sheep cut out of poster board or foam core, each mounted on a yardstick or long dowel. Comic Host grabs them. He runs along an imaginary fence line, waving them high. See? I ll jump these guys up and down behind the fence all night. Then the dogs will bark and howl and keep Bart awake the whole night! Comic Host barks and howls for a bit. Credible Host looks at Comic Host, looks at the audience, and looks back at Comic Host. First of all (loudly) Comic Host finally curtails the barking. (CONT D) First of all, Bart has not wronged you in any way. Second, doing this will keep YOU awake, too. Oh. (Beat.) I m sure there s a workaround. Maybe you should just reveal this month s Life App. 6

7 What s in it for me? A workaround. Fine. Are you all ready to say it with me? Everybody start a drum roll on your legs. Three, two, one! CG: Forgiveness Definition Comic Host reveals the App with a flourish of the sheep. (CONT D) Forgiveness is deciding that someone who has wronged you doesn t have to pay. Now just the people who think [Comic Host s name] has one of the creepiest stares you ve ever seen, say it with me. Forgiveness is deciding that someone who has wronged you doesn t have to pay. Comic Host glares at Credible Host again. I see what you did there. You re still staring. You think I shouldn t make Bart pay. Technically, he hasn t even wronged you. But yes, making him pay means you BOTH pay. But what about my sheep? I spent a lot of time on these. Maybe YOU could count them tonight while you re trying to sleep. Comic Host waves his sheep around some more. 7

8 (to audience) Oh, hey! Any of you have trouble sleeping? For just 50 bucks, I can come to your house tonight with my flock of sheep and Credible Host steers him offstage. No. Just no. Are you saying it s a ba-a-a-a-ad idea? Yes. I forgive you! They exit. ***OPTIONAL WIDGET INTRODUCTION*** Before Credible Host exits, he introduces the widget. I m happy to say that we ve got a MUCH simpler way for all of you to navigate forgiveness. It s called THE WIPE OUT! Remember these? Only if you re over 30. It s called a magic slate, and you can write something down and then pull up the page to erase it. We ve got questions each week for you to answer, like: What do you need to be forgiven for? and What do you need to forgive? Then you can wipe those things out as a reminder that God s forgiven you, and because of that, you can forgive others! Speaking of wipeouts, I better go check on [Comic Host s name]... and his sheep. Credible Host exits. 8

9 Intro Sketch SFX: Fashion by David Bowie Cammie enters dressed in high fashion appropriate for a concert (including very uncomfortable-looking shoes). She s all dolled up: hair, makeup, the works. Mrs. F and Sam will wear identical outfits to Cammie, and Vinny needs to wear something that looks very similar in color and style. Cammie is super excited. She sashays around the stage. (singing) Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me! Happy Birthday dear Cammie... (look around and stop). Where is everyone? We totally can t be late to see Two Directions! I still can t believe Mrs. F got us all tickets. She checks her hair and makeup in a mirror. (CONT D) What if the band sings to me? That would be, like, so embarrassing... to be the center of attention... with the spotlight on me... and everyone watching. (Beat.) Okay, they can totally sing to me! After all, I m SO going to stand out in my one-of-kind [detail the outfit]. And WHERE IS EVERYONE?! Cammie goes to look out the window just as Mrs. F rushes in. She s wearing an identical outfit to Cammie s with similar hair and makeup. She waves four tickets. I ve got the tickets right here! Finally! Where s everyone else? (still at the window) I only had to climb over a couple dozen screaming preteen girls and soccer moms to get them and Cammie turns around and spots Mrs. F s outfit. She shrieks. 9

10 What are you wearing?! What, this? Yes, that! You were so excited about your outfit when you told me all about it. And I didn t want to embarrass you kids by wearing something that made me look like an old fuddy-duddy We can t go dressed the same! People might think I copied YOU. I meant it as a compliment, Cammie. Cammie bolts for the door. I have to go change! If we don t leave right away, we ll be sitting in Egypt instead of the front row. I ll just wear my jacket the whole time. Well, I don t know... No one will ever notice. I m just one person Sam bursts in wearing the exact same outfit and same hair and makeup. Nooooo! Am I late? If only. SAM 10

11 SAM This whole costume-y thing may be fashion forward, but it s SO scratchy! How do you wear these synthetic fabrics? And I m pretty sure the non-organic dyes are leaching into my bloodstream right now. And the shoes Then why on earth are you wearing it? SAM As a birthday compliment to your sense of style, of course! Mrs. F told me what you were wearing and Cammie turns Sam around, pushing her toward the door. You have to change right now. If we don t leave this second How will Two Directions know who to sing to if there s three of me?! Two Directions is singing to YOU?! Maybe. I don t know. Here, just put this on. SAM SAM I m no fashion maven, but this isn t exactly matchy-matchy. You didn t tell anyone ELSE, did you, Mrs. F? No, of course not. I mean, no one it would matter Cammie grabs a crocheted afghan and shoves it at Sam. The door bursts open and Vinny enters. He s wearing a male version of Cammie s outfit: color, style, everything. Everyone gapes. 11

12 YOU DIDN T. VINNY It was rough, Camster. But for your birthday anything. Cammie steps back, staring down her three clones, completely burning up. You know what? NO. I cannot do this, even for Two Directions. I totally cannot be seen in public with any of you. You re all so lame, I don t know why I, like, even hang out with any of you! Cammie turns and storms out. Mrs. F, Sam, and Vinny look after her. They turn to stare at each other. Do you think she s upset? I can t feel my toes. VINNY SAM We better find her. If we split up, we can check in three directions. So we don t miss Two Directions. SAM VINNY Stop! I can only handle one direction at a time. They exit. SFX: Chorus of Best Song Ever by One Direction 12

13 Rapid Response Parse the Word Comic Host enters with a large whiteboard, chalkboard, or poster board with FORGIVENESS written in huge letters. The following dissection of the word can be already written out, or Comic Host can very, very quickly scrawl it out as he goes through the word. This should happen very fast and make as little actual sense as possible. For added effect, Comic Host can wear academic robes and/or a mortarboard. Greetings, and welcome to Rapid Response, the part of the day when I elevate the tone of events with witty repartee and banal faux facts. Today, I shall PARSE THE WORD taking our Life App and breaking it down into its original Anglo-Klingon rootlets, thereby discerning its truest, deepest, and least applicable meaning. Hold onto your mortarboards, everyone. Here we go. F-O-R, as in Fore, which is what golfers shout when they don t want you to have to forgive them for knocking you out with a poorly hit golf ball. Which brings us to O-R-G, as in the orgs who wrong us by using dot-org instead of dot-com, thereby constantly tricking us into visiting the wrong Websites, a sin only slightly more forgivable than dot-net, dot-biz or dot-me. Next is G-I- V-E give, as in giving gifts to your [name of your FX] hosts on a regular basis so they don t feel wronged in spending so much time with you. I-V-E I ve had to forgive many who misunderestimate my academic intellect. V-E-N, as in Venn diagrams, which are a fantastic way to offend large groups of people all at once. And finally, N-E-S-S Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, who must forgive us all for searching so avidly that we force her into hiding. I hope your brain is bigger now. I forgive you all in advance for the lack of standing ovation. Comic Host exits. 13

14 Word SFX: Your Word music SFX: Fancy Grace Intro Fancy Grace enters wearing a business suit and takes her seat behind the desk. She glances around quickly and then digs into her desk and begins scarfing chocolate from a heart-shaped box. VOICEOVER (SFX) They say she comes in like a lamb, goes out like a lion, and has more hot air than a summer thunderstorm. It s News Talk with Fancy Grace. Fancy quickly stuffs another piece of chocolate in her mouth and hides the box. She strikes her serious pose. Hello, this is News Talk with Fancy Grace. I m Fancy Grace. And today we are celebrating the day that is precisely [number] days past Valentine s Day. How do I know the exact date? Because as a student of human psychology I know that we are marked by the UNbelievable and TRAGIC events of our lives events like the day when our longtime producer and so-called friend failed to give us a Valentine s Day gift. The day before we got so mad at this unnamed producer we went out and bought all the marked-down Valentine candy at the WalStore to drown our sorrows. (Scarf down another piece.) I shall not name this unnamed individual because She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named happens to control my microphone. Which is why this person may or may not be named Stephanie. I just find the act of this NAMELESS individual UNbelievable. Which is why I m happy to welcome a guest today who is so conscientious he d never EVER forget a Valentine s Day gift for one of his closest friends. Join me in a round of applause for the shepherd from Jesus story of the lost sheep! The shepherd, Jeff, enters. He s wearing an old, dusty robe and carrying a shepherd s crook. Hi, Fancy. Jeff starts to sit. Uh-uh. Come over here. Confused, Jeff approaches Fancy. Fancy pokes him hard in the arm. 14

15 Ouch! What was that for? Well, you re from a story. So I had to make sure you weren t just a fig newton of my imagination. Fig newton? You wouldn t want to be a fig-mint, would you? Can you think of anything more disgusting than a FIG-mint? Yes, actually. Don t share. I can t stand oversharing. That s why I never book a Kardashian. Look, I m real, okay? Can I sit? Go right ahead, Shep. Jeff takes a seat. My name is Jeff. Oh? My producer is so unhelpful she never bothered to tell me. Actually, she keeps posting it on that screen back there. Jeff points to the back of the audience. Fancy glares at him and pops another piece of chocolate. So, Jeff, you watch sheep all day. I do. 15

16 You just sit there and watch sheep. It includes a lot of You get a PAYCHECK for sitting criss-cross applesauce in the grass and staring at sheep. UNbelievable. I know WE-BUY-GOLD sign spinners who work harder than that. It s a lot of work, Fancy! I have to make sure my sheep have access to good grass and fresh water. And every evening I have to make sure all 100 sheep get back to the sheepfold. You FOLD your sheep? What is this, some kind of Kondo de-cluttering strategy? It s actually I m calling PETA! Fancy pulls out her phone. Fancy, a sheepfold is the just the name for the place we keep the sheep at night. So you trot these sheep into the fold every night. Fancy puts her phone away and pops more chocolate. And count them. Yeah, yeah. Why they pay you the big bucks. I bet any kid in this audience could out-count you. CG: Jumping sheep; one at a time Fancy snaps at the screen (or a stagehand brings out cards with jumping sheep on them). 16

17 (CONT D) All together now: one, two, three, four (fading fast), five... six... seven... Fancy s head drops onto the desk. Jeff stands up and shakes her. Fancy? What? Where am I? Oh! Anyhow, I happen to have it on good authority that your expert counting didn t go so well the other evening. You see, I When you trotted those baa-baa black sheep into the fold, did you find you were minus a ewe? Well Were you short a sheep? You Robbed of a ram? I Lacking a lamb? Yes! There were only 99 sheep. Bluebell was missing. Ha. So much for that conscientious shepherd charade of yours! UNbelievable. You re nothing but a crook! Jeff holds up his shepherd s staff. 17

18 No, that s what this is. Excuse me? Never mind. Of course, Bluebell probably deserved it. What? You re out watching the sheep all day working hard. And does Bluebell appreciate that and recognize your efforts? No, she does not. She just cavorts off on her own. That s just the way sheep are. She purposely put you out. She hurt your feelings! That just makes me so ma-a-a-a-d. Really, it wasn t about me. I hope you left her out there! All alone? With the wolves? Ooooooh, I can see it now. After all that wascally lamb put you through, you went after her, didn t you? I Did you set off into the dark after the black sheep? It 18

19 Traipse after the troublemaker? You see Go searching for that scamp? Well Hunt the hooligan? Yes! UNbelievable. Just unbelievable. After all the trouble she caused Fancy! I had to. After all, it s what God has done for me. YOU ve gone frolicking off? You don t look like one to frolic. I ve messed up in lots of ways. And God comes after me and finds me and forgives me. Hrmph. Because God s done that for me, I can do that for others. Well, of course! It s what Jesus tells us to do IN THE BIBLE. Fancy picks up her Bible and pounds it against the desk. I ve really gotta go before Buttercup or Ladybug try to climb down into the ravine. Jeff exits. 19

20 (calling after) Thanks for keeping it real, Jeff. Stay away from the fig-mints! Fancy pops another chocolate and glances offstage. (CONT D) I suppose it s possible that a certain nameless producer named Stephanie did just forget to give everyone Valentine gifts this year... like she said. Fancy holds up her box of chocolates. (CONT D) Maybe she d like a piece of chocolate from my WalStore stash. I ll even let her choose. Join us next time when we interview a lady with 10 coins who s about as reliable as the tooth fairy in keeping track of them. This has been News Talk with Fancy Grace. I m Fancy Grace. Fancy exits. Storyteller enters. STORYTELLER I think Fancy s imagination was working overtime today. But she did finally get to one nugget of truth: No matter what mistakes we ve made or how badly we ve messed up or how far we ve run, God will always forgive us. And it s not a Well, okay, I guess kind of forgiveness. God s forgiveness is arms-open-wide in a bear hug. He d do anything to rescue you. In fact, He already has. And because God has forgiven us, we can forgive others. Let s say our Life App definition one more time. SFX: Your prayer music STORYTELLER (CONT D) Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your own Son to pay for the wrong things we ve done. Thank You for forgiving us over and over and over again, and help us extend that same forgiveness to others. We love You, and it s in Your Son s name we pray, amen. SFX: Your Word music 20

21 Media Time Video CG: Discovery video from Get REEL 2.0, vol. 23 Exit Sketch SFX: It s My Party and I ll Cry If I Want To by Lesley Gore Cammie stalks in. She looks around and paces. Did they leave? Good! I hope they all enjoy MY birthday and MY favorite band without ME. (Beat.) They wouldn t even have tickets if it weren t for me and my birthday. But are they grateful? No. All they do is mock me. Isaac Misery calls me for fashion advice, but do my closest... (air quotes)... friends respect my talents? No, they do not! Instead they try to turn me into a three-directional laughingstock! Mrs. F enters, flustered. Cammie? Cammie! There you are. We ve been looking all over. Well, you can just keep looking in the other direction. But we can t leave without you! You should have thought of that before subjecting me to undying humiliation and mockery. Mrs. F sits down and yanks off her high-fashion shoes. And before subjecting my feet to these. (Beat.) Cammie, I never meant to hurt you. I thought you d be flattered. But I should have asked you first before wearing this... and before telling everyone else. 21

22 Yeah, well, you didn t. Mrs. F puts on a pair of old gardening shoes. Please forgive me, Cammie. I ll have to think about it. You ve got to come. All the kids are waiting in the van, and all your friends from school are there and your cousin from up north and, well, it s like 99 people! Well... Plus that lead singer from Two Directions. Cammie whips around like she s on springs. What?! Scary Tiles is waiting for ME? I mean, he ll be there... up on stage... singing. Oh. (Beat.) I said some really not-nice things to you and Sam and Vinny. That s true. I was mad. But that doesn t make it okay. Can you forgive me, too? Of course! (Check the clock.) But if we don t get going now, we won t just be sitting in Egypt. We ll be in Timbuktu. Mrs. F heads for the door. Cammie follows. Hey, wait! 22

23 Mrs. F turns. You forgot this. (CONT D) Cammie hands Mrs. F a long trench coat. Mrs. F grins and shrugs it on. Better take one for Vinny. Cammie grabs another coat. They exit. SFX: Your Exit Sketch music 23

24 Special Song SFX: Starting Over (downloadable from the matrix) Wrap Up SFX: Your Wrap Up music So all the kids complimented me on my grunge look. And I actually had a great time at the concert... (pull out a pair of earplugs)... once I started using these. Scary Tiles looked right at me as he sang What Makes You Kinda Pretty! I m so totally glad I didn t stay mad at everyone just to make them pay. And I m glad they didn t make me pay for the terrible things I said! Vinny enters wearing a long coat. He looks around, confused. VINNY Two Directions diverged in the woods. And me, I took the wrong direction. He exits in a different direction. 24

25 Landing When someone cuts in front of you in line, or you discover that your little brother has just colored all over your favorite book, usually forgiveness is NOT the first thing that enters your mind! But the truth is, we all mess up, and we all hurt other people. That means every single day, your family and friends will do things that hurt you, either accidentally or even on purpose. And you ll do the same. And when you re hurt, there are two things you can do. You can stay mad and keep thinking about what they did and find all the ways you can to get back at them. OR you can decide to let it go and forgive. Now, that doesn t mean you ignore what they did wrong or let them keep hurting you. But it DOES mean that you don t stay mad. It frees you up to heal, and it frees them too. It s not easy, but there s one huge, important reason you CAN forgive: it s because God forgives YOU first. No matter what you ve done, God will erase it when you ask. And that s pretty much the best news ever. Let s say our Life App one more time.
