1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THE IMPORTANCE OF LABOR Ever since the dawn of the industrial revolution in the early 19th century, there has been tension between the owners of companies and their workers. Over the last two hundred years, some of this tension has resulted in violence, mayhem and political revolt. Through these years of tension and violence our leaders, especially: Popes Leo XIII, Pius XI, John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II, have called for justice in the workplace. For over 120 years, the primary principle of these papal teachings can be summed up in the phrase: a just wage for a full day s effort. Every worker is entitled to a wage that reflects the value of his/her work, enabling them to live with dignity and to support those who rely on them. At the same time, each worker needs to give to his/her employer their best effort throughout the work day. Over the centuries, the tension between workers and employers has resulted in an imbalance. Sometimes the employer has had the upper hand, failing to treat workers with dignity and justice. Other times it has been the workers and their unions that keep employers from getting a full day s work. Despite these tensions, organized labor has served to increase the pay of workers and create the middle class in very significant ways. Monday - Labor Day, we pray for all those who labor to make the world a better place. We pray for the safety of workers and the hope that all those who are looking for work will find a job that will enhance their dignity and provide for themselves and their families. (Liturgy will be 9 am on Monday!) OUR PARISH PICNIC September 11 we will have our 23 rd parish picnic! The picnic is our annual start to the fall s activities. Over the years, we added fun and games and other events. Our 23 rd Annual Picnic and Ice Cream Social will be NEXT Sunday, September 11, beginning with an outdoor Liturgy at 11 am. Bring a chair and something to share! I hope you will plan to come and be part of the event! In today s passage, Moses has been up on the mountain for 40 days conversing with God. In his absence, the Israelites have despaired and built a golden calf to worship as a God. 1 Timothy 1: The first letter to Timothy was written about 30 years after Paul s death, and was written in his name, a practice common in the ancient world. In today s portion of this letter, the unknown author sketches a portrait of Paul as someone we should imitate. Luke 15: 1-32 There are three stories in today s gospel reading, and they are all meant to celebrate how eager God is to find, forgive, and to save. Reflect: What is it you treasure the most? Why?
