2 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 2 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED WELCOME, POPE FRANCIS!! This week our nation will be blessed with the presence of Pope Francis. As many of you know, he will meet with our president, speak to our Congress and address the General Assembly of the United Nations. He will celebrate the first canonization of a saint in the United States at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. There will also be Liturgies with huge crowds in New York and Philadelphia. Along the way, he will meet with many people of influence as well as children, immigrants and prisoners. In all of these settings, he will proclaim a message of hope and challenge that are central to the Gospel. Over my lifetime, there have been four popes who have come to the United States: Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II (who came three times), Pope Benedict XVI and now, Pope Francis. I suspect the visit having the most lasting impact will be the visit that begins this week. The reason I say this is the style, humility and sincerity of his brief time as pope has touched many Catholics, both those who are frequently at church and those who are on sabbatical. I have also had the opportunity to encounter several folks who are not Catholic, both lay and clergy, who have spoken with great respect of Pope Francis. Often times they view him as the spokesperson not just for Catholics but for all Christians. LAUDATO SI is the name of the letter Pope Francis wrote to us and all the world. If you are interested in knowing more about his thoughts and teaching, our Charity & Justice Team is setting up study groups to discuss the meaning and implication of the 180 page letter. If you would like to participate, sign-up sheets are already in the Gathering Area. There will be a number of groups, so hopefully you will find one that fits your schedule! POOR PLANNING ON MY PART! As I encourage you to watch, listen and read more about what Pope Francis will say and do during his visit, I am very aware that as he comes to the US I will be leaving! I will be going with 25 folks to Spain! (The trip was planned long before the Pope announced his visit to the US!) We will visit Barcelona, Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, Granada and places in between. We will celebrate Liturgy at two very important Marian Shrines at Zaragosa and Montserrat. Next Sunday, (when Fr. Harvey will be with you), we will celebrate Liturgy in the monastery where St. Teresa of Avila spent most of her life. We will pray for you at all these shrines and I hope you will keep us in your prayers! Fr. Dave Howell THIS WEEK S LITURGIES September 21, Monday, Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist Eph 4:1-7, 11-13/Mt 9:9-13 September 22, Tuesday Ezr 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20/Lk 8:19-21 September 23, Wednesday, Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Ezr 9:5-9/Lk 9:1-6 7:00 pm Communion Service September 24, Thursday Hg 1:1-8/Lk 9:7-9 September 25, Friday, Hg 2:1-9/Lk 9:18-22 September 26, Saturday Zec 2:5-9, 14-15a/Lk 9:43b-45 September 27, Sunday Nm 11:25-29/Jas 5:1-6/Mk 9:38-43, 45, :30 pm Vigil Bernie Edwards 9:00 am St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners 11:00 am +Michael Kay Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Numbers 11: The book of Numbers describes the wanderings of the Jewish people in the Sinai Desert. Earlier in this book, Moses had complained to God about the difficulties in governing so many people. In response, God had directed Moses to gather 70 elders around the meeting tent to receive a share in the administrative burdens. Today s passage picks up from there. James 5: 1-6 Today we conclude our series of five readings from the letter of James. A major concern in this letter is social justice. Today, the author delivers a blistering attack, reminiscent of some of the Old Testament prophets. Mark 9: 38-43, 45, There are 3 messages in this brief passage. 1.) No one can lay exclusive claim to the reign of God as revealed in Christ; it is there for the taking. 2.) Even the simplest disciple shares the inestimable dignity of divine life and those who would lead them astray will have the harshest kind of judgment. 3.) It is very important to enter the reign of God no matter what the cost. Reflect: Who is God for You? What opportunities do you have to promote your faith?

Youth News from Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com and Jillian at jilliankillian25@gmail.com Thank you to everyone who participated in our Tin Can Raffle last weekend at the Parish Picnic. It was a success and it was fun! Thank you again for participating. It was a beautiful day to spend outdoors with family and friends. We are back in full swing now meeting on Sunday evenings from 7-9pm in the youth room. Our first item of interest is the high school diocesan wide Jamboree. It s a daylong event that takes place in Lansing and gathers nearly 900 teens from across the area. There is live music, a national speaker, mass with the Bishop, workshops and fun!! We end the day with a dance and fun fest. Registration forms are available in the youth room, out in the gathering area or online by visiting default/files/files/jamboree2015_brochure8% 205x11.pdf. It s Sunday, November 1 and the early bird cost before October 11, is $55. The next item of interest is the annual youth group sponsored haunted barn!! We have a great time getting to know one another while putting together a fun event for the parish. We will be ready for show time on Saturday, October 24 during the parish wide trunk and treat. If you are interested in helping out, contact Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com I am looking for anyone interested in helping the program with helping with food for our hungry teens as many of them come right from religious ed class that starts at 5:30. Ideally, I would like someone to help with getting volunteers and food ideas from week to week from other volunteers, who would be willing to help make the food and serve it. If you are interested in at first just donating snacks, I am happy with that as well. Please contact me at the above address. MEDITATION FOR BEGINNERS God is speaking to you, but are you listening? Here is a class that will teach you how. Our parishioner, Darlene March, will offer a class for those who wish to learn centering meditation in silence and emptiness. The parish continues to support the Bishop s request to assist the people of Flint. The first request the Bishop and the local charities request is for our prayers to support their work. Please remember these dedicated people and their community in your daily prayers. The parish will be initiating a project to assist people returning to the Flint community from prison. It is our intent to provide prisoners returning to the community with a backpack filled with items of need and a message of support and information to help them find their way. We are looking for ways to secure sufficient backpacks to supply these returnees along with people willing to spend an hour or two each month filling the backpacks and delivering them to the proper outlets in Flint. A portion of these backpacks will also be used to support returnees to Livingston County. Please consider volunteering to help through St. Mary Magdalen s Charity & Justice.

7 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 7 SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 One of the great legacies of St. John Paul II is a new theology of sacramental marriage that is known commonly as the Theology of the Body. John Paul laid out this new theology in a series of Wednesday Papal Audiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Since then, many have learned about the beauty of this teaching and its relevance to married life. In October, Deacon Devon Wolfe will be teaching an introduction to the Theology of the Body as part of his Theology of Marriage course in the School of Discipleship. The class will meet on Thursday evenings at 7 pm for six weeks starting on October 8. If you want to learn more about why and how the Catholic Church teaches what it does about marriage, this class is for you! To sign up for the class, you can sign up on the parish website or you can contact Deacon Devon or Sr. Joyce. Other Upcoming Marriage Enrichment Events: Worldwide Marriage Encounter: September 25-27, October 23-25, or December 4-6, in Troy; October 16-18, in Saginaw. Retrouvaille: October in Romulus; January in Dewitt Living in Love: October in Plymouth; November 7-8 in Lansing We Care 2: September 19 at St. Patrick, Brighton Panera Bread Pick Up Names of those interested in picking up bread for Magdalen s Kitchen at Panera Bread (in Brighton on Grand River) on Saturday evenings (at 9:50 pm) for October and the first half of November, are being accepted. The sign-up sheet is on the Charity and Justice table in the Gathering Area. Sign-ups are on a first come first serve basis. A reminder contact or telephone call will be placed just prior to the date you are to serve.
