2 ST. MARY MAGDALEN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED HAPPY 24 th ANNIVERSARY! This Wednesday evening we will celebrate three special events: the Feast of the Apostles Peter & Paul, the 24 th anniversary of the founding of our parish and the 19 th anniversary of the dedication of our church! In 1993, when Bishop Povish founded our community, he chose this special holy day for the date of our founding. His hope was that we would be a community of faith, deeply rooted in the teachings of the great apostles, Peter & Paul. When we started building on this property, there was much to do. The rectory and the barn had to be moved to their present locations to clear the site for construction. The construction took more time than we had projected, and other delays meant that our first weekend in our new building was the week before the dedication of our new facilities. As it turned out, we were able to celebrate the dedication on the fifth anniversary of our founding. During the Liturgy of Dedication, the walls of the building are sprinkled with Baptismal Water to baptize the space. Then the walls are anointed with Sacred Chrism, consecrating or dedicating the building to the service of God. Finally, the altar is also anointed with Sacred Chrism. (There are 12 crosses with an oil lamp in front of them to remind us of 12 times the walls were anointed.) All of this will be celebrated this Wednesday evening during a special Liturgy at 7 pm. I invite you to join us in this special Liturgy. It offers us the chance to rededicate ourselves to the faith proclaimed by Peter and Paul, a faith that we celebrate week after week in a space that has become a holy space for God s people. I hope you will be able to come! THE DEDICATION STONE Usually, a church building has a corner stone listing the name of the church and date of dedication. Since we designed our building to be expanded, we placed our original stone in the Gathering Area near the entrance of the church. The original stone was put in place by Bishop Povish a couple of months after Bishop Mengeling dedicated it. Unfortunately, the original stone was damaged during the renovation. The Construction Task Group decided to move both the statue of Mary Magdalen and the dedication stone to where the statue presently stands. We added a few more items to the capsule beneath the stone and changed the original inscription. It says Witnessing to the Resurrection 1993 as the original did. The three dates indicate the year we were founded; 1998, the year the first church was dedicated and 2010, the year the renovated church was dedicated. Fr. Today we hear of one such deed performed in gratitude for the hospitality given to him and his servant Gehazi. Romans 6: 3-4, 8-11 In a previous section of his letter to the Romans, Paul taught that we sinners are reconciled to God through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Now Paul notes that we experience this reconciliation when in the traditional form of Baptism, we are symbolically buried in the water and emerge to new life. Mathew 10: In this instruction Jesus teaches the Twelve the meaning of Discipleship. As desirable as are family ties, the new family formed in him must take priority. Paradoxically those who take up the cross will find life, even as they lose it for his sake. Disciples are included among the little ones, not the prophets or righteous. Reflect: Are you willing to be a disciple for Christ? 2

Elder Abuse: What it is and what to do about it. See Adult Formation Board as to what Catholic Charities and State Services can offer. This photo shows the load Charity and Justice member Leo Hanifin took to the Center for Hope in Flint on June 12. It reflected a lot of giving by many St. Mary Magdalen parishioners. But it is about half as much as trips last fall and winter. Unfortunately, people around the region give less in the summer, but the needs are greater, especially for basics like detergent and toilet paper. The economic downturn in Flint is still very real, and many of God s children are in great need. Please consider donating the requested items in the Big Blue Box, even when it not the traditional giving season. Sweatshirts Benefiting Prisoner Backpacks Orders for sweatshirts have been taken for the past two weekends. If you would like to order a sweatshirt, complete a form, attach cash or a check to the form and turn it into the office. Orders will be accepted through the end of June.
