1 Central Church of the Brethren Called to believe Connected in love Compelled to serve 416 Church Ave SW Sunday School 9:45 a.m. Roanoke, VA Worship 11:00 a.m August 12, 2018 Ringing of the Chimes ^Gathering Song Leaning on the Everlasting Arms insert Welcome, Announcements & Joys/Concerns followed by time of silent prayer Prelude ^Responsive Call to Worship One Voice: As we gather around this sacred space, we share a common language. A language that points beyond itself: Gathered Voices: To the God we serve; to the Christ we confess; to the Spirit that empowers us. One Voice: It is a language washed in the waters of baptism. It is a language that dares take life from a cross. It is language that has a home in the Sermon on the Mount. It is language that relishes the paradox of a servant Lord. It is language that is empowered by an empty tomb. It is language that overflows with: Gathered Voices: Grace and forgiveness; Redemption and Salvation; Healing and Wholeness; Love and Relationship; Peace and Justice. One Voice: It is the language embodied in communion the language of the bread and cup. It is a radically inclusive language, it is for all of us to speak even as each of us is invited to participate in the bread of life. Gathered Voices: May our lives find their center in this language and may we speak it fluently throughout our days. ^Hymn Unto thy temple, Lord, we come # 4 ^Opening Prayer Children s Message Bob Iseminger Invitation to Tithes and Offerings Offertory Music ^Offering Response Praise God from whom #119 ^Offering Prayer
2 Pastoral Prayer followed by prayer in Unison --Joel Kline With each breath, I breathe in the peace of God. As I exhale, I breathe out my anxieties and stress. I breathe in the hope of God, and breathe out despair. I breathe in the grace of God, and breathe out harsh feelings of selfblame. I breathe in the love of God, and breathe out those fears that threaten to overtake me when the storms of life are raging. I breathe in peace, and let go of my anxiety. I breathe in hope, and let go of my despair. I breathe in grace, and let go of judgment. I breathe in love, and let go of fear. Amen. Prayer Response Shepherd of My Heart Baldwin, Tunney Nancy Reed, soloist Scripture Reading Sermon John 6:35, (p. 98 in the pew Bibles) The grass is always greener on the other side ^Closing Hymn Become to us the living bread # 475 ^Remembering Charlottesville, VA in our words and in silent vigil We send love and blessing, prayers for peace and gentleness, courage and wisdom, to all who are gathered in Charlottesville this weekend. May hearts be turned to love and to the deep understanding that when we lift up and support one another, and we all rise. May the vision of Isaiah be fulfilled: They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. Isaiah 2:4 Written by: Rabbi Malkah Binah Klein ^Benediction ^Postlude ^Invitation to stand as you are able.

Slusher, whose ordination to the Gospel Ministry is scheduled for this afternoon at Bethany Church of the Brethren near Callaway. Let us pray that we will support, encourage, and pray for those who undertake set-apart ministerial service. The green candle on the organ burns in remembrance of the Christians in Nigeria experiencing religious persecution. Especially pray for Aisha Lawan, kidnapped with other girls from Chibok in May 2014 and still missing. To learn more about the Nigerian crisis, visit Household Prayer: Morning Good morning, God. Before this day takes hold of me and I am spread too thin by care, I come to you to sit quietly, for you are good to those who wait for you, to the soul that seeks your peace. Fill me with your life-giving presence; may all that I do this day be done with calm attention, for you are my strength and peace. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Thank you for helping me to become a more generous and attentive person this day. As I let go of all the things done and left undone this day, make me mindful that it is your strength and steadfast loving presence that keeps my faith whole and fills me with a quiet confidence. Amen.
