Letters from Bishop Malesic should be arriving at your homes explaining the goals and reasons for the appeal. This appeal is held each year during the Lenten Season as a part of the sacrifices and commitments we can make to parish and diocese. It is a major source of needed funds for the operation of the Diocese of Greensburg. Please read the information carefully and respond to this call as generously as possible. To learn more about the 2017 DLA go to DLA.dioceseofgreensburg.org. Knights of Columbus Feast of the Unborn Child The Knights of Columbus Council 1275 will celebrate the Feast of the Unborn Child (Annunciation) on Friday, March 24, at the 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church. As in the past, the rosary and a one-hour stand at the five corners will follow. All are welcome. BLOOD DRIVE In association with the American Red Cross, the Knights of Columbus Council 1275 will be hosting a blood drive on Saturday, March 18, at the Uniontown Columbian Hall, 888 N. Gallatin Avenue, from 8 am to 2 pm. With Deepest Sympathy Condolences are extended to the families of Robert Lang and Edward Petro. May God grant them eternal rest and comfort to their families. Women of the Parish We will be praying the Stations of the Cross through the eyes of Jesus mother, Mary on March 24 at 7:00 PM. This is a beautiful, thought provoking walk with Our Lady as she accompanied her Son to His death. Will you consider participating this year?? Please call Alice at the Parish Center and volunteer to read one of these heartwarming stations. You will be glad you did. As is our custom during the Holy Thursday Liturgy the women will prepare the Altar for the Mass of the Lord s Supper. Holy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, when He established the sacrament of Holy Communion prior to his arrest and crucifixion. It also commemorates His institution of the Priesthood. Please call the Parish Center to share in this Solemn Celebration Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites Open Membership The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites of Uniontown invite men and women who are practicing members of the Catholic Church and are interested in learning more about the Carmelite spirituality to attend an open membership meeting on Sunday, March 12 at 1:30 pm at the St. John the Evangelist Parish Center. Orders for frozen piroghi ($9/dozen) can be made by calling Order deadline is Friday, March 31. Pick-up is Saturday, April 8, at St. John s social hall, 9-11 AM. Special Note From Bishop Malesic This year, the feast of St. Patrick, March 17, falls on a Friday. Some have asked me to dispense from the obligation to abstain from eating meat on this particular Lenten Friday due to the traditional nature of its observance. After prayerful consideration, I am granting this dispensation. However, I ask those who chose to eat meat on the Feast of St. Patrick to select another day to abstain from eating meat or to make some offering. My prayers remain with all those who faithfully follow the Way of the Cross to the glory of the resurrection.
4 REFLECTION 2nd Sunday of Lent "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When they heard this divine declaration, Peter, James, and John fell on the ground, trembling in fear. The gleaming vision of Jesus miraculously transfigured before them, and the appearance of the two prophets who had been dead for ages, didn't knock them over. Rather, the clear voice of God that followed this apparition struck fear into their hearts. The first part of the heavenly announcement certainly confirmed what they had just seen-the unveiled glory of Jesus' divinity. But these words included another element, a command from on high: "Listen to him." Perhaps part of the fear that shook these men was the solemn realization that Christ's divinity demands more than our respect. It demands our response. Knowing that Jesus is God is only part one. We are also called to follow him, by heeding his teachings and imitating his example. Lent is a special time to examine just how well we are "listening" to Christ. It is a season to uncover the areas where we are deaf to his word, or at least where we are pretending not to hear it. To this end, we have the Lenten exercises of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. First and foremost, in prayer we literally pause to listen. We do our best to quiet ourselves and ask God to speak to us in the depths of our hearts. By fasting, we learn to silence the demands of those physical cravings that too often take first priority in our lives. And through the practice of giving alms, we train ourselves to hear the voice of "the least of these," in whom Christ himself is present. This Lent, may we respond wholeheartedly to God's command to listen to his Son. 5 Eight Steps to Prepare for Confession Step 1-Think of everything you are doing right. Step 2- Call to mind some mistakes you have made in the past. Ask yourself which of these mistakes might elevate to the level of sin. Step 3- Ask yourself why? Step 4- Use the formula, I was afraid and then I. I was angry and than I. I felt lonely and then I. Step 5-Spend some time thinking about how it could have gone better and how you might try to make a different choice next time. Ask yourself how you would handle a similar situation if you were a saint. Step 6- Bring the sins to confession. Step 7- After confessing your sins, tell the priest how it could have gone better and how a similar situation will look if you make a different choice next time. Step 8- After confession, spend some time pushing off the particular sin into the corresponding virtue. Using all of your senses, immerse yourself in the image of the virtuous action. Dream and think about how you would look as a saint and how joyful you will feel when you make a choice to do the right thing. Step 9 Start at step 1 again-think of everything you are doing right and do more of it!
