In their loneliness, comfort them In their sorrows, strengthen them In their frustrations, point out to them that it is through suffering that the soul is purified, and show them that they are needed by the Church, they are needed by souls, they are needed for the work of redemption. O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your sons who are close to you because of their priestly ordination, and because of the power to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs them so much. Be their comfort, be their joy, be their strength, and especially help them to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy. Amen.

3 My Dear friends, Since the reform of the celebration of the Mass in 1970, there is a little known part called the presentation of the gifts. Thus begins the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The bread and the wine are brought forth to the altar for the priest to offer to God. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says, It is a praiseworthy practice for the bread and wine to be presented by the faithful. They are then accepted at an appropriate place by the Priest or the Deacon to be carried to the altar. Even though the faithful no longer bring from their own possessions the bread and wine intended for the liturgy as was once the case, nevertheless the rite of carrying up the offerings still keeps its spiritual efficacy and significance. The Instruction continues, Even money or other gifts for the poor or for the Church, brought by the faithful or collected in the church, are acceptable. The people are asked to bring forth the gifts of bread and wine and money or other items for the poor, most especially at Sunday mass. It is not a requirement, but it is an option that shows the importance that the laypeople have in being a part of the offertory. Of course, it is no there are usually two people are asked to bring forth the bread and wine at the presentation of the gifts. In many churches, as well as our parish church here in Torrington, the people who bring the gifts up to the priest are either the relatives or family members of the deceased for whom the Mass has been offered, or it is by the person who has paid for the offering. Our ushers try their best in finding the family members of the person for whom Mass is being offered. If you are present at a Mass because it is for one of your loved ones, or if you are the one who offered the stipend for the Mass, please approach the ushers before Mass begins and request to the ushers that you are willing to bring the gifts forward. It is usually only two gifts, the bread and the wine that will be used by the priest to confect the Eucharist so that the bread and wine will become the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Sometimes, the usher could also have you carry the prayer intention book and/or the collection basket as well. In any event, it is a salutary gesture if you want to bring the gifts forward. John DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) says the Trump administration's decision to provide a broad religious and moral exemption to the HHS mandate recognizes that the full range of faith-based and missiondriven organizations, as well as the people who run them, have deeply held religious and moral beliefs that the law must respect. Such an exemption is no innovation, but instead a return to common sense, long-standing federal practice, and peaceful coexistence between church and state. It corrects an anomalous failure by federal regulators that should never have occurred and should never be repeated. The Holy Hour begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a light coffee-and reception so we have the chance to meet one another. Each week a student will be picked to bring the chalice home and return back on Saturday/Sunday at Mass. The family will be assigned to take the Chalice home and display it in a prominent place of honor for all members to see during the week, and they will accept the responsibility of praying for vocations at home as a family. God s Word Pamphlet These child friendly pamphlets will be available at mass each week. They are designed to help children understand the weekly Gospels and readings at Mass. In addition, there are weekly questions for them to take home and work on with their families. Children s Missal You will find Children s Missals at both St. Peter & St. Francis. John, invites you to join him at our next meeting of the Pro-LIFE Ministry Wednesday, November 1st the JPII Pastoral Center Our Mission: We proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God; that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self and others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, must protect and nurture human life at every stage of its existence. We work to teach respect for all human life from conception to natural death. We do this in four focus areas: Social Ministry Committee will meet on Thursday, November 2nd at 7pm in the Pastoral Center. New members are always welcome. The St. John Paul the Great Social Ministry Committee will be participating in Undies Sunday for Operation Overflow. We will be collecting new, still-in-the-package underwear, socks, bras, long johns and plain t-shirts the weekend of November 4th-5th. All sizes and genders are needed, including children. Collection boxes will be located in St. Peter and St. Francis churches. The donated items will be distributed during the winter season to those in our community who are homeless and/or in need of clothing assistance. Paper grocery bags, which Market 32 (Price Chopper) has generously donated to us, will be in the pews at all Masses the weekend of Nov. 4th-5th. The list attached to each bag indicates the food items requested. Please take a bag home and return the filled bags to St. Francis or St. Peter the weekend of November 11 th -12 th Please remember that the food banks cannot accept expired food items. Please check all expiration dates before donating food items. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, please put it in an envelope marked Food Drive and place it in the collection basket. Any checks should be made out to either FISH or Friendly Hands. Gift cards are also welcome.

This is a time for us to think about what we are thankful for, a perfect time to share our compassion with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, and to work toward a world where no one has to experience hunger and homelessness. Vigil Mass with Archbishop Leonard P. Blair a special Mass of Remembrance will be offered at Thursday, November 9th for all those from St. Francis, St. Peter, Sacred Heart and St. Mary who have died since All Soul s Day last year. Immediately following the Mass, there will be a reception at St. Peter Hall.
